I thought this was a really good article about what we know about Covid & immune response, and a good summary down the end of what we can realistically expect from vaccines.

I didn't like the end part. The most likely scenario is this virus will be around forever.

Once people are vaccinated it goes from being a dangerous virus to just being another disease in a long list. People don't worry about catching TB, MMR etc anymore and they were bigger and badder than covid could ever be. It's really nothing to be concerned about once people do the right thing and get vaccinated.

I hope you're right. But how long will it take to get to the stage where you don't have to worry?

Well really once the frontline workers, OAP's, people with pre-existing conditions are catered to then it's less of a worry. It'll take a while but things will go back to normal. They always do.

The million dollar question, when can we go back to normal. I'm really hoping for worst case end of Q2 2021 but fingers crossed before....as that's what I'm basing my budget forecasts on!!:)

Yeah I'm hoping to salvage the latter half of 2021 as well. I plan on drinking every brewery dry.

If the Covid Vaccine doesn't provide sterilising immunity then it is a bit different. By having had Measles, Mumps and Rubella I have sterilising immunity, as has someone who has had the MMR shot in the last couple of decades. I can't catch those diseases but imo, most importantly, I can't carry them and give them to someone else. So if I meet someone who has no MMR immunity, I can't make them sick with it.

If we don't have sterilising immunity to Covid, a recovered person and/or a vaccinated person can't get particularly sick with it. But there may well be a few days that we can infect other people. And if those people have no immunity, through previous infection or vaccine, they could be unlucky enough to get extremely ill and die. Unfortunately vaccines don't work as well on people with reduced immune function as they do with the general population. So those who are most vulnerable to Covid, like the elderly, even when vaccinated, still need the rest of us to act as a form of blocker and drastically reduce it's spread.

As a generally very healthy person who remembers having Rubella and Mumps as a genuinely nice experience. I see vaccinations as a way to share the benefits of my health with those who aren't as lucky as I am. I chose to get my very healthy son, who would likely experience childhood illnesses in the same way I did, vaccinated in order to use his health as a way to protect those who didn't have his advantages. If he can't get the Measles, he can't spread them to someone who wouldn't cope as well as he probably would. If we don't emphasise that kind of vaccine importance to the general public, anti-vax fears could be a bigger problem with Covid than they are with the other illnesses we vaccinate against.

I’m planning/saving towards a holiday abroad in a September 2021. I think that should be a safe bet.

Exactly, the more the merrier. Hopefully the majority of the population see through the anti vax guff and do the right thing. There's no point in complaining about the economy, no trips abroad, empty / cancelled sports events, shut pubs etc and then refusing to take the vaccine. The only way to restore those things is to take the shot.

I think AZ and several of the other manufacturers have been producing vaccines for months at a potential loss. Hopefully this will mean supply can meet demand without any delays.

Take this with a good few grains of salt, but I had a chat recently with a friend of a friend who actually works for them. At that point in time he said they were up to a couple hundred million doses produced and stockpiled.

These are the sorts of anecdotes I enjoy reading, ready salted or not!

I think the government once there is a vaccine and it’s readily available and good proportion of the population take it, should declare a 3/4 days party everybody closed except pubs as they’ll need to cash! GO ABSOLUTELY F**KING MENTAL!!

I do believe there are doses ready to go but I wouldn’t go as far as hundreds of millions

Would not be any surprise. They begun production a few months ago and have been and continue to sign contracts for production capacity.

Hundreds of millions ready to go when approved has been mentioned previously

Sounds good but reality is the vaccine will be rolled out over a long time, maybe 6+ months. It all depends on supply and it will probably be Europe that makes the decision on who gets what and when... and then the Irish government decides vulnerable and healthcare first.

Might get a street party like victory in Europe day. Victory against covid day. Maybe we could have a few extra bank holidays to make up for the lost ones.

Finland is not going to make any Covid-19 vaccinations compulsory for the entire population, partly for legal reasons. They are also planning to vaccinate children last, as they are the group least at risk (of the disease) - healthcare workers would be first. They are trying to create their own vaccine, but that's not expected to be ready until autumn 2021, so they'd be going with EU-wide vaccinations first. According to a survey 70% of the population "is interested in getting a Covid-19 vaccination".

Followed by some of the largest or most sudden tax rises across most nations, bar Chinyaa. The jolly nice chap (Sunak) in the uk in charge of their monies was photographed today with a document that had the word 'tax rises' on it.

Pagans, vikings, death metal music fans, and many other religions or belief systems, might have objections, that are protected by law, as is the case in many states.

    Which means 30% aren't interested.

70% is fairly low, some other recent surveys sugest 75% (thus with 25% not interested).

For regular frontline health staff in hospitals the annual flu jab take up is already surprisngly low, each site is different, but heard the figure 50-60% on the radio earlier today.

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has notified public health officials in all 50 states and five large cities to prepare to distribute a coronavirus vaccine to health care workers and other high-risk groups as soon as late October or early November."

"The scenarios, which assume that the two vaccines could demonstrate sufficient safety and effectiveness for an emergency authorization from the F.D.A. by the end of October, note that Vaccine A, which seems to match Pfizer’s, would have about two million doses ready within this time frame, and that Vaccine B, whose description matches Moderna’s, would have about one million doses ready, with tens of millions of doses of each vaccine ready by the end of the year. Although it’s possible that some promising preliminary data may emerge by the end of October, experts are skeptical."

Perhaps, but either way I'm glad to see a focus start to shift from if a vaccine will be effective and safe and onto how we actually distribute the vaccine, the logistics, and which groups we prioritise first to get the most benefit.

Absolutely no reason not to start this planning now in the event everything does go to plan and we do have an approved vaccine on our hands by mid to late October, which at this stage is only 6-8 weeks away.

I wonder how many healthcare workers will be prepared to take a vaccine that has been rushed through.

lets hope the stealing of vaccines in mid air doesnt occur like what happened with PPE shipments.
