Have you been to the mainland? I much prefer outdoors than been jammed in a pub, gladly sit down at the side of the street people watching with a few beers.

Yes and while that's lovely in the 3 months a year where the weather is sometimes suitable for that, its not something we can come close to doing year round. Its fine suggesting this in August, but we're about to go into a 6-7 month period where you cannot comfortably sit outside with a beer.

Let's all agree that alcohol is essential to our wellbeing, but that we have different views on where it is best consumed!

How many on this thread would support this
Health Passport Ireland - supposedly being piloted at the moment and to be brought into schools, nursing homes, etc.
Basically our civil rights gone & living under the complete control of the state.

Prof Luke O’Neil was on Newstalk just now actually promoting this:

Smokers have been drinking outdoors all year around for years. There's some great all weather beer gardens in the country with plenty of fresh air. Stuck indoors with the doors closed front and back is not the way forward.

Health Passport Ireland is a private venture, nothing to do with the state.

Looking at it, I can see the idea, but I'm skeptical about the utility. There are also very big privacy and data protection hurdles to overcome. It'll probably work in the US and Australia, but not here.

The idea is that you would use an app to display your "Covid status". That of course would require that someone has taken a covid test, recently.

Someone else could then use this to permit/deny entry to a facility. This is the sticking point that won't work. In many cases it would be illegal. In most cases people will tell you to go fnck yourself.

Their trying this outdoor socialising crack on o connell sheet n Limerick at the moment. Looks utterly depressing. Give me my old rural Irish pub any day of the week. We don't have the climate for this to be a success.

I'd expect this nonsense in Spain , not Norway ...

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-53969564
Twenty-five people have been taken to hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning after attending an illegal rave in a bunker in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

Five are in a critical condition and two police officers who tended to the partygoers are among those poisoned.

Authorities believe the poisoning was caused by portable generators.

Police say the "Rave Cave" event, attended by some 200 people, was discovered by chance when a patrol met a group of confused young people.

    Strange comment. Why Spain?

35 in hospital, Highest number in a number of months. The last week or so have seen a worrying increase

Is there a need to change how we report Covid cases in the country? I note that RTE still refer to the total number of cases since March. Referencing 27000 cases where over 20000 of which were in the period before June is at this point of time misleading.

Would it not be better to nuance this by including a 14 or 7 day average in cases, and refer to regional variations. Maybe reference how we are compared to our EU neighbours etc etc.

What was the increase day on day? Are these linked to the known outbreaks and specifically the three counties who had further restrictions?

The numbers game is still quite confusing - even the covid app is not updated daily and you are hearing numbers on the radio and tv that will not be displayed on the app for a further 24 - 48 hrs.

If they (HSE,DOH,Gov, whatever...) can't issue the same info on all their platforms at the same time, then your best bet to keep track is to stick to one and just wait for it to be updated.

They’re not stupid, a huge amount of their voter base would be in the “at risk” age group. They’ll hold their powder dry for the moment and when needed they’ll see which way the wind is blowing and blow the tune that will ring best with their voting public. Same as they’ve always done.

Like any good politician representing their constituents and their wants...

Mentioned in passing to my manager that I had a slight shortness of breath (I have asthma) yesterday and he kicked me out and told me not to come back until I had a negative test result. Guess my workplace are taking it fairly seriously!

I think the "loophole" needs to be closed completely. Restaurants only open. No alcohol sales. No pubs selling chipper food pretending to be restaurants.

You "need" a drink with your food? Great we have coke, Fanta, water etc. Are we really so hopelessly alcohol dependent that this **** is ok so long as we can get a pint?

You do know its not about the "drink" as such, its about enforcing restaurant style distancing?

It's just basic information. Anyone who wants more can poke around the various platforms of data. Total cases, new cases and hospitalisations are simple numbers we can all understand.

Pretty interesting thread here - the settings of the machines are based in US - interesting if the same applies across the world

If may be basic information but how relevant is it? I pay for my news from the national broadcaster and I think in a public health emergency it should be relevant and this is where most of the population receive their information. I would imagine that the presentation of this data is influenced by NPHET and the Government but what is the most relevant data for behaviour at this time?

Yes, but the pubs are closed, so we're ok.

I tend to agree with him. As time goes on certain types of information become less useful and relevant.

Total number of cases ever doesn't really tell us anything any more. It doesn't tell us if things are getting worse or better. It's just now a big number and any chance for it to cause shock are gone.

Reminds me a lot of the banking bailout. For weeks the media kept throwing out more and more billions of euros, bigger and bigger numbers to try and cause greater alarm. Eventually nobody really knew what the real number was and it lost its impact.

I think the national 14-day average would be a good start, as well as keeping track of the number of active infections. 142 cases out of 27,000 total cases is a small number. But if we only have 1,000 active infections, then 142 new ones is a big problem.
