I'm surprised it's held out till now tbh. I've no idea how we've managed to keep Covid out of these high-density environments like DP and low-wage factory workers, until now.

I'm constantly hearing soundbites like this and it's getting tiresome.

Until the hospital numbers start to increase significantly from current levels there's absolutely no need for people to panic.

I wonder when UK will block us from entering?

You're right, the next few weeks will be piss easy.

I am off to Marbs with the lads, no need for any cares in the world whatsoever, the kids will be safe in school and my job is safe as can be.

    Happy days indeed.

We've had a few more restrictions placed upon us this week.

Have they done anything about meat factories and workplaces which started this increase?

The staff in the meat factories were crying out for PPE and look at them now.

I know two large companies and there's no masks in use. These two companies are in the same town and if staff get sick, our hospitals won't be able to take them all.

What are they waiting for to introduce mandatory masks in all indoor workplaces?

Paul Reid’s press conference was good there.
Saying that there factors at play beyond their control.

Companies not giving employees sick pay was called out. They can do sweat f-all if these factories won’t pay their imported labour while quarantining.

How can some be waiting nearly up to 5 days for a test then still?

Its being realistic, blind optimism is just stupid at this stage. Not a soundbite their is obvious evidence of what is likely to happen.

Does anyone know if they are still limiting the sale of hand sanitizers in shops?

I like the small bottles that fit into the pocket and need to pick up one but they're so small, that I want to pick up a few.

I think 4 was max at once, I got 6 at once in Dealz

Tomas Ryan doesn't realise you can't add medians of different populations together. How an academic can have such poor knowledge of basic statistics I don't know.

That's before even mentioning that the medians he's mentioning don't reflect the full population tested, just certain cohorts.

I don't think they're limited now, lots of shops that never sold it before have small bottles by the counter as impulse buys. Alternatively, keep the small bottles and fill them up from a larger one.

Yep, bet the new 5 year olds can't wait for that.

Nobody is saying its ideal but I don't think many are acknowledging how strange going back will be for them with all the changes. Another issue what's the contingency of there's clusters in schools? Even delay it a few weeks to get all these issues ironed out. Do people want their kids to be effective Guinea pigs?

It's unbelievable, we have to stay in groups of 6 and 15 so that the factories and DP centres can run how they like,it's unbelievable. How about sorting the places that have 100s of cases and let people enjoy watching a sports game.

Are there very subtle hints appearing that those in power are coming around to the fact that lockdown is not an option (whether considered over-reacting or not), eradication is close to impossible, and that it might in fact be better to attempt to get back to normal while shielding the elderly, where possible?

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but very few governments will come out and say "back at it everyone, except the elderly", but even with the mixed messaging in MM speech, it was practically "we can't lockdown the elderly, but ffs do your best to avoid it."

Seems like they didn't like the chances of it "running through the healthy" but now it's happening and running through younger people, with more evidence of lots of asymptomatics?

I dunno, just thinking out loud here, seemed to be maybe leaning that way.

"the overall message is very, very clear." is it yeah ? Because two departments didn't even know yesterday what the correct advise was

While this is true and he's not correct about what the median total lead time is - surely in an evenly distributed data set - there shouldn't be a 50% delta between the median total lead time of 2.3 day and the sum of the individual median's of 3.7...

that would indicate some absolutely massive outliers?

I'd love to see him try to sell another lockdown country wide

I find this really unfair too. I’m in Kildare nowhere near the outbreaks. Initially I thought it was fair enough to impose restrictions on LOK but I assumed they would also have strong targeted restrictions on the factories and the DP centres to try and control this thing. I feel these factories have way too much power and are prioritised over all other citizens and businesses.

The idea is to stop the hospitals filling up. If they fill up again all kinds of other procedures will have to be cancelled as it won’t be safe for people with many illnesses to be in hospitals.

Hate to say it but it looks like it is spreading from DP centre to DP centre and on to low paid work environments in the vicinity of those centres. If the way we have accommodated what is ultimately a small number of people has been a significant contributor to resurgent spread, it is a damming indictment on how we have managed the issue

It's too late when that happens. Everything we are doing is to prevent that otherwise will become Bergamo or New York.

FF set up DP around 2000, lot of people awarded contracts either FF donors or connections with FF. It's been inhumane for years. Shatter compared it to prisoner of war camp when in oppositon but changed his tune when he was justice minister. So many preventable issues due to government policies and actions. Hate this idea that everything is inevitable. It only is if you're not willing to change. Sorry rant over

I dunno, just thinking out loud here, seemed to be maybe leaning that way.

I think that what politicians are saying and even what public health official say is always eventually trumped by new circumstances and reality.

Four weeks ago Glynn was "uncertain, but optimistic" and now it's a completely different story.

Leo and MM have dropped quotes and hints throughout the summer that are now totally at odds with what actions they've taken since.

    They're only words.

They can say they won't do it and they probably even believe they won't do it, but if there's no options then it'll be done. I don't think it's likely where we stand today, but the future is totally uncertain and people are putting too much faith in politician's pronouncements as guarantees.

    True

Not sure how exactly we can accommodate all the people though when there is housing shortages as it is

    Very tricky problem
