Is astonishing how many believe a Nobel implies the holder is never wrong. The list of winners who disintegrated into a level of madness in later life as their field passed them by and they became irrelevant is long.

Poor man is likely correct though.

The US were conducting gain of function testing there on bat coronaviruses since 2019. None of it nefarious all published research.

They stopped funding it in April of this year.

    Hell of a coincidence.

    Nice strawman...

The point is that they closed the borders in 2001 to prevent importation of the virus and succeeded to a large measure in keeping us F&M free.

And a strict 14 day quarantine gets rid of the virus before it can spread, as you know very well.

Instead we have the usual 'too little, too late' responses now.
They closed the border to live animals and dairy products and not to public. That's completely different than stopping any of the nearly 13,000 commerical vehicles crossing the border every single day. The sheer volume of trade means we would be shooting ourselves in the foot economically trying to do that.
I guess they could all park on the hard shoulder and quarantine for 14 days. Nobody minds some rotting 'fresh' produce when it finally arrives in the supermarket

Pubs must be cancelling orders as we speak ahead of announcement this week.

Let them in and send them to a staging area where the goods can be transferred from one truck to another, then send the trucks coming in back to where they came from. The driver doesn't even need to leave the cab.

That would require 2 trucks for every journey. We don't have that capacity. What about Irish drivers? They will need to leave the cab at some point across Europe and it is impossible to police.

What borders did they close during foot and mouth? I remember disinfectant soaking at the NI border, but we didn't see flights cancelled or stopped from coming in.

The movement of people globally can't be compared to the movement of livestock from the UK.

But a check on the border can. Mandatory quarantine with a substantial sanction for breaking it would suffice.
Asking people to act like a robot a.k.a "restrict movements" is a joke.

Well there'll be no announcement until next week but none will have ordered anyway.

Many had stock in for the last reopening already on 10th August. There's broad acceptance that they won't be given the go ahead anyway for 31st hence the calls for a support package to be in place

We have thousands of Roll on Roll off trucks bringing vital goods into the country every week.

Do we quarantine the drivers for 14 days or do we stop all exports and imports via truck?

NZ does not have this problem and their capital is still in lockdown.

    Zero covid island is impossible.

I'd say they are ok, they sleep in their truck.
Just add a rule saying that you are 100% not allowed to invite a truck driver to a barbecue or a house party or to a meat processing plant or to a mushroom factory and we should be ok.

We can't reduce all risk to zero. It's trade offs.

1 Garda tested postive and the other officer whom they've been paired with since March also tested postive.
Neither Garda is believed to have contacted the virus through their work as police officers

Always find these kind of statements a bit weird. Would the second lad not likely have got it from the first, in work? It's like the stories of microphones being shared at karaoke parties, or lighters shared at Aussie quarantine facilities - how can they be so sure of such a thing? A mic or lighter? Maybe just being in close proximity at a party or working in a quarantine facility was the risk.

Agree on zerocovid is impossible - But on the trucks thing, plenty of trailers are dropped off at ports and loaded by the ferry company, no driver travelling with loads. No reason why that part couldn't be solved easily anyway - but beyond that there are tons of other considerations that make zerocovid a pipe dream.

Thoughts on this - covid deaths vs. excess deaths? Not a fan of this guy as posted earlier, but curious as to views. And before some smartarse asks me for my own before posting, I don't know.

Thanks for this. Why is there always a large discrepancy between the additional positive tests and the positive figures? Sorry if this was already explained.

You can see here that there definitely is a "Saturday effect" (red).
    Don't understand the backlog etc.

Wowzer is right. Only 66 of them yesterday so 180 to be announced at some point over today or tomorrow

Any idea how much your suggestion would cost? Plus many of the drivers doing this actually live here

15,885 is a fair amount of testing also.

Positivity rate of 1.6% is a good sign that we’re keeping on top of this, albeit having high case figures. No major increase over the 200 mark expected so far anyway.

It's another view point I do find interesting, and like you, I'm not sure. Lots of people write him off as he said Covid would be over at a certain stage. He was referring to excess deaths being at or below baseline for time of year, rather than eradicated, so was somewhat correct. I do find his general commentary interesting as he is questioning the mainstream narrative, with less emotion/agenda/conspiracy than others in that cohort.

Wow, that's a colossal number, looks like my prediction was a week early. But honestly looking at those figures we've lost the battle. Either lock up now or let the government tell us the plan. This waiting and letting things get worse is not acceptable!

seems to be a bit of confusion growing about symptom criteria for a test. this is the latest guidance on the website.

it doesn't help that they go on to list a large list of less common symptoms without saying whether a test is required.

    https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/symptoms.html

    Last updated: 6 August 2020 at 9.55pm

If you have any common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), you should self-isolate and phone your GP straight away to get a coronavirus test.

    Common symptoms of coronavirus include:

a fever (high temperature - 38 degrees Celsius or above)
a cough - this can be any kind of cough, not just dry
shortness of breath or breathing difficulties
loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

You keep saying the same thing but just increase the number every 3 to 4 weeks.

I’m repeating what Professor Nolan said. Do you watch the press conferences? Low positivity rate means you’re covering all bases.

    Yes

Since when have they been retesting positive cases?
