As others have mentioned, I found it hard to get into D86; the early African episodes seemed too far fetched, and not as tight as D83. (I wasn't aware of a change of directors)
However, I'm glad I persevered, the last 3 episodes have shown a return to form. Perhaps it's because they've been filmed in Germany, in particular the East scenes you can feel the tension & paranoia. There are lighter moments in it, but I think the DDR computer expert (Hartmann??) is a bit too light.

I was behind and just caught up over the weekend, but think I missed 3 and 4. RTE had 5-8 available, seemingly it listed 5 there twice from Feb 20th (blurb was the same and now it's only showing one as 5 *shrug). The joys of RTE Player. Anyway, I'll go back and look at 3 and 4 as they're on More4, as per Dave's post.

Like most of you, I wasn't that keen on the African storyline and that early part of 86 seemed to lack that oppressive quality we saw in 83 (iirc), and even some of the hallmarks of spying. However, and this could be the binge talking, the German side of it seems very much on form now. I really enjoy the HVA meetings, admittedly I don't always follow the agendas that are in play. Did seem like there was an Elizabeth Jennings shout out there, even fake news got a mention. The bombing was sad, the attempted border crossing just wasn't to be. Having missed a few I've no idea who the American who was in the soundproof box (in 2.05, I think) and his wife's chocolate chip cookies. Seems the pop music came back in too. Chernobyl caught me be surprise, shouldn't have given the year. :o HBO have a mini-series about it coming up in May, btw. Of course, there's Schweppenstette (and Schneider who is lovely), old tech and the rooms where almost everything is a yellow/brown. :pac:

I started to watch 86, but the subtitles were so hard to read i gave up . Very disappointing as i really enjoyed 83 and was looking forward to 86

I found the subtitles on All 4 much easier to read than those on the RTE Player.

I second the All 4 subtitles. MUCH BIGGER. I watched the last two episodes on it last night and didn't need to squint once. Anyone not finished it watch it on All 4.

Such a shame that RTE go to the trouble of buying this and then do such a piss poor job of the subtitles, get complaints about it and all they did was change the time to an even later spot.

Overall I really enjoyed it. D83 was better, but still 86 was, in the end, very good. Hopefully D89 won't take as long to be made.

So, is it a TV station buys in shows and then gets subtitles elsewhere, rather than having it all as a package?

I think the DVD will be on sale soon in the UK. I got a cheap copy of D83 from Italy. In German but with English subtitles. Best way to watch it!

The whole Africa thing may seem far fetched but it did happen. I think the writers got it spot on following the "This is England" style and revisiting the story and the cast as they get older. I bet D89 will be 100% Germany!

Outstanding once again and neatly follows the 80's travails of East Germany.
I have a huge interest in East Germany and this series brought a lot of what I've read to life.

Just finished watching this.....'86 was good, but the first few episodes were really weak and just not at all compelling compared to the first season, thankfully it evens out eventually and the last few episodes in particular are great.

Now to wait 2 odd years until Deutschland 89...

Halfway through 86 ... brilliant show. Really enjoying it! Slowly watching more highly rated foreign shows as it makes me watch with the phone off.

Just read the previous posts concerning 86, and naturally the African exploits felt outlandish, and therefore relatively poor. Surprised to learn then, that it's based on true events- not outlandish at all (in real life- still felt OTT, and contrived). Also, there was a freshness and tautness in 83 in the main character's (Rauch) enrolment as spy; learning the ropes on his first mission. During his subsequent 3 year gap in exile, he's suddenly as expert as James Bond. Exposing the farce of the GDR utopia in the boardroom scenes ramped up to 11. So, didn't think it was good as 83, but still great fun.

Deutschland 89 is being released on Amazon Prime in some countries on 25th September.

Hopefully it will be released here shortly after that.

I thought the first series 83 was really good but couldn't get into 86 so much. Thought it was a bit weaker. Hopefully they'll bring it to a good finish. Looking forward to it.

That's great, something to look forward if we're still in the Covid doldrums. Hard to believe this thread is 5 years old. Time flies.

Fantastic news. Can't wait for this.

86 was top notch, can't wait to see how 89 plays out.

Look forward to this on Channel 4.

Look forward to this on Channel 4.

I am not sure if it will be on Ch4/RTE as Amazon has the distribution rights.

The 25th September release date on Amazon Prime is for Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Japan and India.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,691 ✭✭✭Acosta

I'd be sceptical about RTE getting it as they couldn't even be arsed to put proper subtitles on D86

    It will be,

    It will be,

I had another look there and found more info on a German site. Fremantle International own the rights and Channel 4 is one of the stations on its board so it almost certainly will be on Channel 4 after all.

Amazon is showing it in the countries I posted earlier as none of the domestic stations were interested apparently.

Correct, it never took off in German speaking countries.

Great to see it get another season, but hope it's not just relegated to Amazon. Their subtitles for the this show in particular are woeful. Last time I checked, they only worked with audio descriptive on, which is very poor.

Might have said this already, but it's a pity there was never a second season of The Same Sky. I think they probably got the look and feel of what it must have been like to live in the DDR and the whole craft of being a spy a lot better.
