    How is it not?

Life was put on hold in wuhan where there was a proper lockdown. You couldn’t leave your house.
This is not a lockdown. It’s a restriction. A fairly half arsed one at that, racing at the curragh to go ahead etc. People aren’t locked down!!

So there's a bunch of asymptomatic people who are self-isolating, yet the Dublin government decide to shut down 3 whole counties? The mind boggles.

Can they not lockdown and cocoon though?

Yes they do, and this is tough for them.

People were shouted down here even yesterday by the everything is grand crowd when they dared suggest that there would be localised restrictions and just a day later here we are.

Just to follow up on the gaa posts, as a non gaa person, I spoke with someone today who received a notification that someone they had been training with had been tested for covid following a display of symptoms. The problem is however that this person went to training after their test. So you can have the best systems in place, but you can't deny it's an outlet for potential spread if people don't follow procedures.

No you ultimately cannot account for the action of every individual with regard to the rules for society as a whole. But you could apply the same logic you have done there to any other setting where this same person ignored advice to self isolate, for example he goes to a supermarket and doesn't wear a mask.

Ultimately if you were to blanket ban everything, you just push people like that in to less controlled environments and situations that could be:

    A) more likely to cause an outbreak
    B) harder for public health teams to track and trace

If they were to take another approach, then another group of people would be unhappy. They're in a very difficult situation IMO. They can't keep everyone happy

Freedoms being taken away, mandated muzzle being imposed on people, restriction of movements, all being pushed through by decree without any debate or any resistance because 19 people contracted this unremarkable virus??? But by all means rush to show your compliance.

Face coverings for secondary school students where social distancing can't be maintained. Are there any teachers here? What are the plans for schools and social distancing?

It's a pack of sh1te for sure. It's OK wearing a mask going shopping. You can get shopping done in an hour or two but a whole school day from 9 til 4pm. That will be a pack of crap. Students will need to have a change of masks for each day and change masks with each break and from lunchtime. It will be a pack of balls altogether for 1st year students entering into secondary school. The teachers will have to take the first years outside so they can all show each other their faces before they cover up for the year ahead til a vaccine comes through. Christ on a bike!

Agreed. People have been shouted down on here for a long time in the eyes of the everything’s ok brigade.
This has been inevitable from a long way out due to human nature and the ability of the virus to spread so quickly and undetected (asymptotic cases)

Yes, asymptomatic can still spread the virus. It's mind boggling alright, why would they want to stop it spreading?

When did muzzles become mandatory? Must've missed that.

The official guidelines plan for at most 1m distancing with 24 students plus staff in 49m2 classroom. So masks will be required the whole time more or less.

Are GPs slow now to send people for tests as some are not showing up for tests?

It bit like a scratched record here.

Jaysus the mind boggles alright perhaps its because of this that there doing it and to try to prevent the spread nip it in the bud before it becomes a problem

The #LOKdown counties have had days this week where they represent over 70% of new cases, despite only having 8% of Ireland's population.

I suggest you learn how to read charts and stats.

It's not a Dublin v rest of country thing. Such an idiotic argument.

That's going to be tough and I don't know if this was thought through. Students will need to have a supply of masks and they will have to store them correctly too after use each in their own ziplock bags.

I think the only way forward for secondary school is blended learning. Some at home/online learning and teaching and some school part time, maybe for practical classes like science, home economics, woodwork, art etc. I haven't a clue how it's going to work but what an absolute balls this 2020 and virus stiff is turning out to be.

Yeah it's a wet dream for the tinfoil hatters. Still don't understand the muzzle comments. Wearing a mask protects others. Pretty simple really.

Ah here. You don’t have to like the guy, that’s absolutely fine. But it’s also pretty unfair to say he was laughing and sniggering at numbers of people dying.

He openly said the worst part of every day for him was the updates in the evening bringing the news of how many new cases and deaths were reported that day. On at least two other occasions he stressed that it was important that people not get too desensitised and just see the day’s numbers as numbers, that it was important to remember they represented real people who were sick and who had died, and families and friends that were grieving the loss of loved ones.

Leo definitely didn’t handle covid perfectly, he and his government most certainly made mistakes. And the Mean Girls quote, though I don’t believe it came from any bad place, was probably not his best idea. But it’s going way too far to say he laughed at people dying.

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re struggling with worry over vulnerable family though. It’s a very tough time for people in that position, but also equally tough for the people who love them.

He’s a fûcking arsehole, and he made a mess of a job which he was elected and entrusted to do... the mean girls thing isn’t on that level but just shows the direction of the mans thought process in a time of huge uncertainty, danger and fear for the country and it’s citizens... quoting fûcking mean girls, the absolute cünt.
