True but that's a byproduct of the messaging on masks not being strong enough from the start. People should be wearing them in crowded workplaces in the first place, no exceptions. You had Leo and Harris saying they wouldn't make them mandatory because some people are allergic to them. Absolutely braindead leadership getting the messaging around such an important issue so wrong. Really struggle to forgive them for that.
Distancing is far more effective. You can't really point fingers at people who don't think the way you wanted them to do, especially as they were following the best advice. Masks to me are a means to get lots of people out and about and they would not have stopped the spread from known high risk areas.

Brutal speech by MM. He reminds me of one of the bird puppet characters from the dark crystal.

I find his speech in general very unclear. LV at least had a very clear speaking voice

If all from today its a big rise considering the last two weeks had only 3 deaths.

Can others stop mentioning suspected hospital cases when the numbers to focus on is confirmed covid cases. Also some others might laugh it off but keeping community transmissions in single daily figures is very important.

Yup agree on all counts there

Tell that to the many people suffering bereavement or people (like me) who have vulnerable family and at our wits end over it

That guilt trip won't work on me. It is just a bit of fun.

I am all for zero covid to protect your family.

You are ok with flights from the likes of Texas so?

How many have there been and how full are they?

You're making it sound like there's loads of full planes coming from Texas every day and all the passengers are infected.

Reality is there's very few people coming from America. Majority of passengers coming in are Irish.
    Most flights are from Europe.

The Texans who you're so worried about are legally obliged to isolate.

How many Americans have you met whilst out and about under current circumstances? I have not met any as there's nowhere open to meet them as you normally would.

They are not transmitting it. It's being spread within the community by people already here.

MM is getting a kicking here and to be fair he is a boring speaker, but, I've said it before, I think it was a little bit easier for Leo in some ways. When lockdown was announced, support would have been nearly total and then he hid behind NPHET for most of the period, apart from turning up every now and again and saying things were going to get better quicker than expected. MM has had to stand over much more unpopular decisions - no the pubs won't open and have some more lockdown there for yourself.
There's no doubt about that. I do wonder if Leo was still at the reigns here if the pubs would be open. I think they probably would. Leo's popularity is more important to him then actually doing what's right for the country.

The Irish Government were encouraging staycations and now they've decided to restrict individual counties.
This one, with such large clusters in those counties is probably the right call.
Hopefully they can rejoin the rest of the island in 2 weeks!

HSE Report says: Suspected COVID Cases - 121
Further down the report: Number of COVID-19 Swab Results Awaited at 0800hrs, 1400hrs and 2000hrs - 121
    https://www.hse.ie/eng/services/news/newsfeatures/covid19-updates/covid19-daily-operations-update-2000-6-august-2020.pdf

After a bit of googling I got this:

    https://hselibrary.ie/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Evidence-Summary-COVID-19-Risk-Assessment.pdf
All patients presenting to the healthcare system with symptoms of acute respiratory infection in countries with local or community transmission of SARS-CoV-2 should be considered as suspected cases according to the EU case definition

Suspected cases are classified as having symptoms.

It's made clear by you but I haven't seen anything official about it ever. The truth is we have no idea what qualifies as a suspected case. You believe it is people awaiting test results in a hospital but you could be wrong.

Totally agree people could be getting swabbed for any amount of reasons. Wont listen will just keep posting the same thing.

The report clearly states that its the number of swabs awaiting analysis. It's got nothing to do with what the HSE use in a clinical manner. I know this from a family member who works in the CUH.

The virus doesn't pick and choose. Playing sports means players together in the changing room, players on buses etc.

The fact the GAA is back at all is a joke imo. Other sports have weekly testing. GAA has zero precautions.

They have protocols unlike the meat factories. Teams don't change in the dressing. Its all outdoors obviously and with outdoor transmission 19 times lower than indoors and with no close contacts above 15 minutes it has lead to no known clusters in these settings. I can understand why Sports in these counties might be angry. They also invested alot into streaming services for people to watch games. Hopefully it will only be for two weeks. Hopefully its a case of short term pain for long term gain.

Yeah but distancing obviously isn't always feasible and the thought that people were on public transport without wearing a mask for weeks due to the governments inability to make such an obvious message clear is inexcusable tbh. If one life was lost due to someone not wearing a mask when they should have it's too much. They made a total balls of that. Only really taken till the last 3/4 weeks I'd say till we fully recovered too and you see most nearly everyone wearing masks.

thats people with symptoms of course they're suspected.

Anyone with an outstanding swab in a hospital setting is a suspected case. I said it on here recently a family member is an ICU nurse in James's. They had 5 ICU admissions the other day and were showing 5 suspected cases in ICU in the HSE report. Only 1 was actually suspected, others were in ICU for non covid reasons. But come reporting time HSE request how many swabs have you outstanding, they say 5, its 5 suspected cases until swab says otherwise.

Non covid patients are being swabbed and if the result is outstanding then for HSE reporting they are suspected until swab says otherwise

Continue to minimise as you see fit. That is why they are locking down.

You mentioned it was 121 patients in hospital, up from 15 on Wednesday, it’s 121 suspected cases and the 15 were confirmed, so it’s comparing different numbers.

    The reality is:
11 in hospital, down from 17 on Wednesday
121 suspect in hospital, down from 194 on Wednesday.

I know someone on holidays in Offaly at the moment - what’s the deal with people staying in hotels - would they have to leave and cut short their stay?
