So if surface particles isn't an issue, why keep them closed? I'm not a gambler. Surely making masks mandatory will help not just in retail settings.

Yeah masks should be mandatory everywhere. Maybe making it just retail at first is their way of getting people used to the idea.

Casinos do serve alcohol though. Or at least the ones in dublin city centre , such as the sporting emporium do so I presume thats why they are closed. People would just gather there to drink if the pubs were closed too

What's the plan when it's still spreading with mandatory masks in shops, I've yet to hear any of the pro mask brigade say what decade they intended to stop wearing a mask if no vaccine, do I take it these are for life now. Seems to be no other plan from Government.

Cash, it's exchanged frequently every day, Covid doesn't seem.to be attracted to it.
I would say the vast vast majority are using cards over cash at the minute (a lot of places in Dublin won't take cash), if they are handling cash they are washing/putting hand sanitizer on their hands after.

Riddle me why we haven't seen outbreaks in post offices they've been one of the businesses that traded the whole way through this handing out cash. They even went as far as giving everyone free postcards to touch and send around the country.
Santaiser at cash registers seems to have disappeared since masks were introduced, haven't seen anyone clean their hands after I gave them cash.

Not much of a riddle imo.
In post offices you are maybe in a lot of cases talking about 1 or 2 employees who are working all day behind plexi glass. These people handle things all day, envelopes, money, handing out forms etc so I would think they are well versed in cleaning hands and not touching their faces well before all this. They don't have to use hand sanitizer with every single thing they handle. Also who says there haven't been a couple of people working in post offices that have caught corona?

I have seen plenty of hand sanitizer still in shops, it might be your experience but it is not mine.

I've only been to Dublin once since January so we're probably seeing different level compliance with guidelines. Dublin seem to have got a way bigger shock than most.

What's the plan I'm not seeing one. What's the study from Holland say, for every 200,000 people who wear a mask for a week they prevent 1 case of covid. To me it looks like we're taking the heard immunity route.

Make them mandatory on public transport first, a few weeks later in retail... Like the virus will hold off from infecting others in other buildings.

    Half arsed measures.

I am in Dublin and was in West Cork last week and was very surprised at the lack of masks .I saw only hotel staff wear them and very few in shops or cafes etc . We were served by a girl in a restaurant who not only had no mask but stood far too close to us and seemed oblivious of any pandemic .

How, with such a country of successful people is Donnelly our Health Minister?

Harris was a fear-monger but at least he was competent.

Donnelly looks like a rabbit in the headlights....

I know....we should be kind to everybody in this epidemic but seriously, we can do better, he must be the worst minister ever.

Asians have been wearing masks for decades, against influenza, dust from earthquakes, pollution and other reasons. Is is really that bad to wear a mask or is it too difficult to think past "eh this thing makes me look like an eeji"

Outdoor gatherings being increased to 500. Great news.

Is this the case from next Monday, or has it been delayed further?

I'm in the west at the moment, in fairness all the pubs/restaurants we've been to the staff are wearing Masks. Distancing is gone out the window though. A lot of rural places don't have a covid problem though and never had besides imported cases from hospitals etc so I can't really blame them for thinking everything is normal in their part of the world which it is.

    Where is this study? Link?

So that is what 25 less cases a week in Ireland, great. No harm done.

    https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2020/07/dutch-position-on-face-masks-is-confusing-and-damages-trust-what-the-papers-say/

It's not that they aren't recommending masks by the look of it....they are just not making them mandatory (and getting a bit of stick for that seemingly).

Masks have helped in other countries it's as simple as that imo. People talking about "muzzles" etc need to get a life and grow up.

I'll remind you of the figures from the Dutch study on masks again, for every 200,000 people who wear a mask for a week they prevent one case of covid. It's the wrong game plan from Government, it's going to fail, what then, can only be another hard lockdown once it's out of control.

Any Evidence, any what's the end game? You still haven't said how long you intend to wear one for. Have you lost the power of free thought?

You don't need to keep reminding us, just post a link so we can see this study for ourselves?
no doubt it is peer reviewed etc?

    Any evidence what?
The end game? This is a global pandemic it is imo about people doing whatever small things they can to limit the spread so hospitals etc aren't overwhelmed. As for longer term who knows a lot depends on treatments vaccines etc I haven't got a crystal ball, either have you.
I will wear one on a bus etc for as long as needed it's no big inconvenience.

I won't bother responding to the free thought insult, there was zero need for it.

Just because they decide to not wear masks everyone else should follow suit? Cultural differences can also influence influence how virus's spread but ask yourself and the same argument was used at the start when people and the government were advising people not to wear masks, why do doctors and nurses wear masks?
They wear masks to protect themselves and there are plenty of studies been done on the difference between wearing one and not wearing one.

You know there's very little things peer reviewed at this stage, it's all an ongoing experiment.

Has any political party or organisation had the strength to protest against this shambles yet?

It is scary there is not one opposition party willing to take on this absolute disgrace.

So it's a totally different country with totally different social norms etc....and it's not a study......it's a memo...which in itself is seemingly a skim of existing sources plucking evidence that suits their narrative....so pretty much useless.

Re the 11 o'clock closing time for pubs / restaurants.

The vast vast majority of them from what I heard were being stricter than NPHET and were closing at that time anyway.

A few though turned back into pre covid pubs around 10.30 - 11 o'clock.

So that is where that time limit has come from I imagine.

And even if they did only stop 40% it is still better than stopping 0%. I'd say the hospitals would rather have to deal with 60 people instead of 100.

You can join G'OD party (ACI - not a registered political party - but dont worry it is SIPO registered so she can take in money which is the main thing for her I am sure the great patriot that she is...).
Or you can join that screeching dwarf and nazi fan Justin Barrett and his gang of right wingers.

The world is your oyster, knock yourself out.

Health professional are not wearing cloth and home made masks don't kid yourself, there also trained in how to use them. Grabbing my coffee this morning the person behind the counter pulled up their chin strap to their mouth before touching my goods they needed to scan, it's a joke the way there being used.
I've watched the NEPHT meetings from the start along with interviews with Cillian De Gascun on TV, they all have hesitations on masks as there are clear dangers with improper use.

    Im sorted so:D

Why is there no political party there to carry the voice of the every growing opinion that we just need to get on with it in a responsible manner?

Like do our politicians just lack the guts to make a hard decision?

This argument has been going on since the start and the same excuses are still being used but this time by people who don't want to wear them.
