Numerous holes in the plans for reopening schools alright, but I still think keeping the pubs closed is the right thing to do.

    Economically no, health-wise yes.

Either way, the schools will be disastrous, calling it now. I give them a month.

There's not a hope social distancing will be maintained in schools. Not a chance.

More so than in pubs however. I'd take the chance on proper adherence in schools over pubs, after some of the flaunting of regulations in the food pubs so far. I'd also value kids getting an education before having my much missed pint.

I'm not saying the pubs should be open. I couldn't care less, personally. I just don't like how they think it's going to help schools when the school plan is literal mumbo-jumbo.

No, no.. No they're not. Really. The mind Boggles at times.

    That will change soon enough.

Be careful what you wish for, in Israel they seem to think that the fact that the children s mask were hung together on a hook (obviously) helped spread the virus, if children are required to wear masks there needs to be guidance on storage etc.

The thing I don't get is that the things causing the surges (food factories and Direct provision centres) are what were always deemed essential services and were never closed in the first place.

Those cases have nothing to do with restrictions in any phase yet the solution seems to be deemed to delay things like opening pubs fully or allowing larger outdoor gatherings which haven't been causing any cases in the first place.

The outdoor gathering thing really bothers me, lots of people want to do a road race or go watch a match and there is no evidence whatsoever that such things cause infections but are effectively getting the blame.

This is a very good point tbh. Pubs do sound like a bad idea, but the numbers now are from things that are open and have been opened the whole time. Two ways of looking at it, factories are a risk and the ones this week have just been lucky so far, or, maybe this was happening the whole time and as testing improves and becomes more accessible we’re finding and tracing better? Either way, there is a limit on the number of people in such occupations, adding pubs adds a lot more potential for those in higher risk jobs to mix with others. So it technically still could be meat factories fault that you get a cluster in a pub. That’s probably stretching it a bit. But adding pubs is adding another degree of social interaction which we know in general is more risk.

Bad and all as it is to have this pandemic and all the uncertainty into the future at least we are riding it out here in reasonable comfort. Imagine being in Beirut tonight. Or India. Or the favelas of Brazil. I really think we should maintain perspective.

Another good point. What always gets me is that we’ve a similar seroprevalence to Spain and perhaps (debatably) Italy, but what I had imagined I my head of day to day life in Italy is very different from the “comfort” I’m experiencing here.
I've seen kids wearing face masks.

Under 13s exempt as far as I remember. My 4yo daughter will wear one because she wants to be like Mammy and daddy, it’s a bit of a grim reality but I certainly won’t stop her.

Case numbers have been in the up for how long? Deaths aren't following.Australie lock down millions simply because 7 people between the ages of 60 and 90 died.
I'm sorry if I annoy people, but this is being handled wrong. This illness is not as serious as its being played out. Will people regret this lockdown method when anarchy breaks out?

Stop protecting the health service and start utilizing it

Stephen Donnolly - Cases being driven by 8 clusters, 4 factories, 4 direct provision centres. Described as significant clusters

Selective hearing.. The rest of his statement..

Stephen Donnelly- Community transmission remains at 20%. Therefore we have 2.5 times more community transmission cases than a month ago.

Well they weren't supposed to open unless work couldn't be done remotely. That was to ease in phase 4. Small offices are fully open but all the big accountants and law offices are working from home save for essential staff (finance dept, IT dept, etc).

That's a vague guidance, all our office staff on site.

No! Cases have gone up by 2.5, including community transmission cases.

Community transmission cases are 1/3 or more less than average. Average is 31% of cases.

But 1/3 of a bigger figure is still a bigger figure.

It's pointless trying to debate here.

The weekly average is up to 53. Regardless of whether community transmission is below average, in layman's terms there are a lot more community cases around than a month ago. 2.5 times more.

In March we went into lockdown becuase 60-70% of cases were community transmission.
We're seeing 20% (even though they reported 4 out of 45 today which is not 20%, 5 out of 46 yesterday which is also not 20%) in 4 counties.
Yesterday Prof. Nolan tweeted we're very positive about transmission and now Donnelly's out saying the opposite.
I'm sure you can see what I'm saying here, there's a clear breakdown in communication.

Saying things were worse in March doesn't fill me with a lot of encouragement!

I understand your point about the ratio of community transmission cases staying constant, but the problem seems to be that in absolute terms they are still rising and they are popping up in different areas across the country.

I'm not sure why you're saying I'm looking for a silver lining when I'm literally criticising the government for not being transparent about community transmission figures. They're giving one figure in the press releases and tweeting saying all is good and then in the media saying the opposite.

They said 2 days ago the community transmission cases are coming from 4 counties.

where did this latest narrative of "sure they're only clusters, it's grand" come from? these groups of people aren't in complete isolation from the wider community, we've been out of lockdown for a while now. they are visiting friends, going on holidays etc just like everyone else. bizarre take on things.

I'm not against keeping pubs and certainly nightclubs shut but keeping them closed will only lead to
    a) them all opening anyway and serving chicken fillet rolls from the local Centra
    b) staying closed and loads of uncontrolled house parties.

The outdoor gatherings for sport thing however is Ludicrous.
There is no evidence that outdoor gatherings cause any infection, certainly not having 450 at a football match in a stadium that holds several thousands. It's been almost universally accepted that there is minimal risk of infection in outdoor settings.

Small clubs around the country such as GAA clubs relying on a few hundred paying spectators or athletics clubs which had fundraising races planned are going to be hammered by this.

Okay I’ll post this again! This is what Professor Nolan said last nights. Donnelly said the opposite just a while ago. They’re making it up to suit their narrative and I really f**king hope they’re not listening to absolute f**kwits like Staines and Killeen. Possibly two of the biggest twats I’ll ever see or hear!!!
