I see "listen to the experts" doesn't apply when the experts have something positive to say. Funny that.

Well he's a ****wit according to boards so that's his career over.

Well we will forget the fairly dodgy maths.

Do ye both think Ireland has now reached herd immunity like he is claiming?

I've flicked through a few articles quoting him. My impression is that he seems to be both saying that most people are immune, so giving lots of fuel to the anti-lockdown brigade, while also supporting restrictions and lockdowns as the way to slow the virus down until we have vaccines and treatments.

    Very odd.

I suspect what may have happened is the anti-lockdown people are simply looking for a headline from a scientist, and he's being used. His "but..." is ignored as it doesn't fit the narrative. It's the same old false-equivalence trick used successfully be the anti-vaxxers and anti-climate change people, where they find a small number of people who can be made to sound like they agree with their view, and claim this somehow means the scientific community are split down the middle.

No. I was just making the point that it's interesting how when a scientist posts something scary a certain cohort of posters pile on here to smugly tell people to listen to the experts, yet when one says something positive the deference to experts suddenly disappears.

Good news and bad news should both be treated with sceptisicsm, yet some people want to lap all the bad news up and scoff at any good news. And yes, I'm aware it happens the other way as well but that's more of an issue on the other thread.

So you agree by him claiming Ireland has achieved herd immunity that is in fact a dangerous statement?

As far as scepticism goes, I always try and fact check everything I post or pretty outlandish things that get posted.

But the only "Good News" as you say that I have seen posted on here in the past couple of days is from a guy making extremely dangerous claims based on pretty inaccurate basic maths and links to conspiracy sites.

But hey you seem to agree with me, sounds like you are just having a moan for the sake of it.

This is the point I was making about Michael Levitt- people are arguing here about newspaper articles that quote him. His actual work is out there somewhere linked in twitter but it’s hard to find. I’d love people to analyse and comment on his actual work because I can’t make head nor tail of the bits I’ve seen but It’s not easily accessible in one place

I think making any definitive statement on the virus is dangerous. A lot of people on here only seem to have issue with some of these statements and not others.

A lot of the scary news being posted is from clickbait twitter or YouTube users. That doesn't seem to bother people as much though for some reason.

I think it's pretty clear what I'm moaning about. To avoid any uncertainty though, it's the fact certain claims are treated with a lot more scrutiny than others.

I do notice that a lot regarding immunity and vaccines. People will say with unshakable certainty that there's no immunity or a vaccine is years off/ never coming despite all the news saying otherwise.

It took me a minute to "scrutinize" his claim.

It was abundantly clear he was talking complete nonsense, I did that by performing simple maths with his figures.

They were out by nearly 300%. That's before we even mention his "80%" claim.

TBF as claims go it was a pretty meaty one, Ireland has achieved Herd Immunity.

If I can debunk that sort of claim in a minute using his own figures, it's not great begin with is it?

I think it’s fairly obvious now there’s an issue in two or three counties that needs sorting out, I wouldn’t be overly concerned unless it became national

    Cool.

So number of cases by 10 = 261,090

    I found 15% to be around 730,000.

I'm guessing he didn't win the Nobel laureate for maths?

I don't get his maths either. If 80% of the population is resistant, how come we had any cases at all - surely with most people already resistant, it would be very difficult for a virus to spread.

And he's doing the "I'll just multiply this by 10" thing which is my pet hate when it comes to pandemic statistics.

A lot left because their predictions of armageddon failed to appear.

LOL. Armageddon didn't happen because of the actions taken to suppress the virus.

If true this is very disappointing. There was a slow increase over a few weeks but it was up and down. It was up one day and down the next. If we get numbers in the 50s and 60s today I would consider it to be high especially considering we've had high number a few days in a row.

On a serious note can a Mod take a look at the personal comments here. There is definitely a witch hunt in operation.

I actually had to multiply it by nearly 30 to get the figure he was claiming.

But listen there is a reason no one is listening to him, it wouldn't be uncommon for Nobel Prize winners to make some batshít claims later in life.

Do you know what interview that was? Because I listened to the one on RTE and he never mentioned potential case numbers for today.

The rest was all mentioned but no prediction was made at all

I see "listen to the experts" doesn't apply when the experts have something positive to say. Funny that.

Thats not fair. He says himself his background is not in the area but hes applying his maths skills to the particular issue.

And his maths were wrong. But Im guessing (and far be it for me to question an expert) but maybe he thinks irelands population is smaller than it is?

But it would be very 'kings new clothes' not to point out obvious inaccurracies. And it really didnt take any deep scrutiny to see it.

Everyone hopes hes right. Of course! Be brilliant if it went away like magic!
