I don't know how you could possibly come to that conclusion.

It's past your bedtime, I presume you have been in one of those pubs operating without covid measures till now.

Only reporting 1k+ a day so far. It's not going down, it's on it's way up.

The more "acceptable deaths" is people fixing on a per capita basis.
Only a few weeks ago Brazil had less deaths per capita than us, you could hardly say Brazil were doing better than us back then, could you?
If china announced 500,000 deaths tomorrow from Covid, they would still be doing better than Ireland on a deaths per capita basis.

I understand where you are coming from and kinda agree
But how do you compare how well countries are doing if not per capita
The US may have the best healthcare in the world but the vast majority of the US do not have good healthcare
Brazil has a lot younger demographic than the US or us - and I'd be a bit sceptical of the real figures there for obvious reasons

You have to pick your point of analysis - no country in the world is the same except maybe grouping Europe and some other English speaking countries

How can you accurately compare how any country is dealing with this?

We are constantly compared to NZ!

That sounds like you're trying to moderate how people should behave when in glass houses, Zeb.

It's against the rules. I'll regrettably have to report it

I think the US is the 30th in the world for healthcare. First in the world for healthcare costs maybe.

But anyway, I don't think you can compare countries based on a single point.
I think it's more a collective of points. I mean if we're comparing just deaths, we're 35th on the list, per capita we're 15th, on cases we're 58th and per capita we're 35th. So you can pick and choose and we will be doing better or worse on a certain stat. It's not a game or competition.

Cuba, some say impoverished, but similar population as Sweden and 5000 less deaths. I don't hear anyone mention how they are doing better than them.

When I said the US has the best healthcare in the world the latter part of the sentence was very pertinent
Think Europe has something like 20 countries in the top 30 - no place I'd rather be to be sick if I caught this

But I very much take your point.

Sunday's independent reporting outdoor crowds of 500 will be approved on Tuesday to start 10th August, good news for sports fans there.

Nightclubs as expected will not get the go ahead (how could they).

Pubs are expected to see some sort of movement towards being approved with strict guidelines but the last few days have shaken confidence a little, no final decision has been made yet nor will it be until Tuesday at the earliest after they review the weekend numbers and early next week, and there looks like there will be a differentiation made between rural and city pubs, what that might be hasn't been expanded on but I'd assume it'll be opening hours as this was mentioned yesterday.

Independent also reporting guidelines for pubs without food will be closely monitored when they do open.

If, as was rumoured, there will be restricted hours i don't really see how that will be beneficial
Everyone in the bar early in the evening to cram in a few pints before they close at midnight makes no sense

Yeah yesterday a few papers were quoting government sources saying restricted hours, looks to be the usual leaks popping up a few days in advance.

I'd suspect many will just operate to the current restaurant hours.

It was done in Austria back in May / June for 2 or 3 weeks, 11.30 closing every night, all went well and they gradually allowed later openings. I think similar would work here.

But yeah I get what your saying, if you've a late bar your taking the same problems that would occur at 2am and moving them to 12

No reason to not just restrict the numbers and let them be spaced out over the evening

I would generally go out later as it is quieter (at least the places I go to) - but I'm old and loud music does my head in tho after all this time I wouldn't mind it!

Don't envy the guards having to police this the night they open if it goes ahead - I will be avoiding opening night :D

Someone was mentioning Pandemic on Netflix the other day, I'm watching Pandemic a mini series from 2007 on Youtube, is this the one on Netflix or is it the 2016 film that was made. The 2007 one is quite good, obviously tv movie grade actors but well put together.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

No - the Netflix one is a documentary

People seeing the small increase in numbers and panicking again. 40 or even 80 odd cases is nothing,

Population of around 5 million, there's 6 people actually sick with covid in hospital,

They love saying the age of people who are testing positive, but not saying these people aren't sick atall

    LIFE EXPENTENCEY 79 years old

    COVID DEATH average 82

Excess deaths from pneumonia in America for the last few years. Those are CDC figures. They've stopped releasing them now to the best of my knowledge.

The UK is another example of pride getting in the way of the truth. Non-hospital deaths weren't reported until the hospital ones had dropped well below 1,000 per day.

THATS 'LIFE EXPECTANCY AT BIRTH', IF YOU'VE ALREADY REACHED 79 YOU SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO LIVE ANOTHER 7 YEARS OR THEREABOUTS, ON AVERAGE...

ACTUALLY, life expectancy is 82 in Ireland ...

There should be separate threads really depending on people's level of education.

The alc's used to be sent to the relaxation thread but this thread is just a free for all now.

Victoria declaring a state of a emergency and Melbourne entering a phase 1 type lockdown.

I had friends in Aus flaunting their beach cocktails on social media when the **** was hitting the fan here. I guess I'll be getting to know their sitting room for the next while.

Not to pedantic here but it's only Melbourne going into phase 1 restrictions. The state of Victoria outside Melbourne is going into a phase 3 type lockdown.
Either way I feel very sorry for them.

Edited the post, didn't spot that.

Hopefully they get it sorted, their economy is at serious risk thanks to its reliance on China and relations souring with them. This is the last thing they need.
