50.5% more cases per capita and 59.1% more deaths than us.

That makes no sense, as their statsprive.

Those stats are quite meaningless really, youd have to ask was their excess mortality worth it as a society. They have been prepared to accept it, so youd have to imagine in general, they felt it was.

No they aren't. Not to have people living in separate houses visiting each other now.

ooh no... typo meant catch cases early. Still clearly not awake here!

    don't mind me. No bother.
I'd swear some think it might be best to get it out of the way and move on.
    It's a theory although wouldn't recommend it.:)

    Are pubs still open there?
If people can't meet in other's homes, they'll just go to the pub instead.

Apparently not allowed either- it’s meeting indoors not just in houses. It appears they announced with little to no guidance.

No two households should meet in indoor settings, according to the BBC, which includes restaurants, pubs etc, etc.

Not sure how all that is workable, but there you go.

The trouble with this virus is it's invisible. If it was the case that the minute you got it you got the squits, projectile vomiting, a severe nosebleed and one turned eye I think more people would sit up and take notice. That's my take on it anyway.

People buying a drink alone without food is “of critical national importance” now? Christ get a grip ffs

I do think RTE might be better off challenging the whole food thing a bit at this stage as being the magic bullet against covid. Properly run establishments with social distancing will work the same without the food. Police the distancing, not some political measure.

And they've probably just got a couple of staff in trouble who thought they were doing a favour for someone. The way the reporter was talking about the food you'd swear it was the virus -"Do I have to have food, do I?", browbeating staff into giving in and them stabbing them in the back!

Looks like Portlaoise discharged their last patient and Cavan got one. Here’s hoping tomorrow we see another drop before the weekend lull. Great numbers.

Some people are never truly happy unless they are miserable. This whole situation has allowed some of these masochists to reach previously unknown levels of ecstasy it seems.
I think it's probably best to leave them at it. It's not my scene anyway.

Felt sorry for the Kerry publican and his ilk.
It's clear that even operating in reduced capacity would kill them (those with mortgages at least)

Why don't we allow pubs to operate outside?
I.e convert carparks where social distancing can be maintained.
Allow use of an area of public space.
Rent a cow shed or whatever.
Gov provides grants for the minimal work required.
We can all wear a coat to support the local business in this time of need.

catch being it must be outside (open walls minimum). Think barn.
It's essentially like instead of giving them the exclusive and lucrative licenses for public houses
we convert it in to the exclusive license for previously illegal drinking.

Experts don't have a monopoly on logic. I don't like KH and haven't looked into what she said but rubbishing people just because they don't happen to have very specific qualifications is bull****.

Most people know that sadly coronvirus will bring suffering to people, the issue is whether we are completely blowing it out of proportion. There are innumerable ills in the world...1000s of ways to die, now a natural virus emerges that kills people in an age bracket where most people die naturally.
We are by all accounts facing down the barrel of climate catastrophe yet we don't close up everything...maybe we should but we don't. It's all about risk and costs and benefits. "If it saves one life is a cop out" because there is mental anguish and life's being ruined because of these restrictions. I have a girlfriend abroad. I'm not sure if our relationship will be able to survive given the barriers that hysteria over Corona has created.

She's not a great advocate for anything though.
    She hates everything.
Pretty sure she wouldn't mind killing off everyone over 60.
    Don't think that's fair.

From now on closures will be targeted towards those places not following the rules or specific zip codes if they experience higher numbers.

Interesting to see how it works. At least there is a plan which includes some measures, and not just "it will probably go away soon".

So in Spain they started to do anti body testing, now they are detecting many more people with covid 19.So the second wave is an increase of detections which looks terrible but hospital admissions should be the number to determine a crisis.

Feel bad for the Kerry publican on PT.
He held up Melbourne as an example in that they were allowed to remain open.
Bit unfortunate given the resurgence there.

Yes, the "look at country X" argument doesn't seem to work brilliantly.

I hope the employees of these meat factories that are consistently the epicenter of outbreaks take big legal cases against their employers and get well compensated for the obvious lack of controls their employers have implemented. Lots of workplaces continued through the lockdown and only meat factories have consistently allowed outbreaks to occur.

If it wasn’t for meat factories we could all be heading out for few pints tonight.
It doesn't look like any of them are badly affected given that Hospital numbers are down to 5.
Maybe if one of them got really sick they might have a case

No doubt meat processing plants and similar factories are difficult working environments, but I have heard some cases related to meat plants may have been deliberate "self infected" because the covid illness benefit is higher than the basic wage.
Hard to prevent that happening without closing the plant.

Comment with a fair amount of upvotes on Reddit Ireland
Pubs won't be opening until the schools are successfully (or otherwise) open. They won't risk missing a chance to open schools for the pubs. No way, José. At least October for pubs.

Makes sense that they'd save some of the R0 rising for Schools before Pubs
