Third week of slow upward increase in numbers, no way they should open up pubs now. I wonder how long more we can afford to allow this pattern before we start to see things get out of control due to increased incidence of sporadic superspreader type events?

i didn't say it was a second wave.

But you are talking about a second wave being inevitable here because cases are growing globally. Social distancing and masks are a fact of life for the next while, and that alone will prevent a rise such as occurred in March. There may be challenges but measures in place and awareness of the risks plus test a trace ability will significantly slow any resurgence

7 day average at 18, was over 20 less than 2 weeks ago.

It would be nice if the government could just declare the virus illegal and ban it, wouldn't it. :):)

And if they found a way to put VAT on it they'd keep it around forever

The amount of people who'll emigrate out of Ireland will be in the thousands once the world opens back up properly and once the likes of Australia is back open to Irish

We've had enough of it now. We're a small island of just 5 million people and yet there's incompetence, brown envelopes and clown show politicians at every turn

And, as an added bonus: here's ridiculous levels of tax and a freezing Winter for you too. Enjoy!

The smart ones have realised this will never change and it's no longer worth your energy to fight it.

From Charlie Haughey (he should've done real jail time) to Bertie "I had a good day at the bookies" Ahearn to the present day and the complete and other gobshíte Meehole Martin (I've heard 8 year olds speak with more authority); the bottom line is, as such a small country, we constantly put people in power that fcuk things up

So it's easier to just leave the country

And that's exactly what the sensible ones will do once the dust somewhat settles on this

again if people read the news outside ireland, second waves have been occuring around the world after relaxing restrictions:

various states in the US, iran, spain, france, germany, belgium, south korea, japan.

why do people think ireland is a special case? i'm not trying to be alarmist, but people need to prepare for the winter and the behaviours and attitude i'm seeing around the country do not bode well at all.

Swabs from test centres are processed by the NVRL. Before the pandemic they weren't open for routine testing at weekends. Then they threw all resources they could to Covid testing.

Tests are still being processed 24/7 but maybe some administration supports have been rolled back until Mondays again. Cillian DeGascun would be the man to ask.

thanks was just about to say if anyone had an idea it would be yourself. I was going to post similar but adding that maybe staff levels are down to taking a well deserved break/rest/holiday. Between your response and my idea see no reason for DeGascun to to state it publically.

Thanks NVRL staff for all your hard work.

I like to look for positives in life. Our numbers are good, we as a society have a good handle on things . There are a few exceptions of course. You wallow in misery if you wish , not good for ones mental health though.

Reports people having to isolate after someone attended kids birthday party and tested positive.

What's going to happen in September when everybody's kids attend "birthday parties" 5 days a week?

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.

i mean we're completely ****ed if people are still debating the seriousness of this heading into the winter. i think we would have had a better chance 30 years ago before the internet took off and dumb people started making more dumb people.

Do you not understand how this spreads? The people you've been in contact with before showing symptoms is at risk of contracting the virus. It's so important to get tested and get you and your contacts isolated. You can't just stay at home for two weeks and hope it goes away, it's not about yourself.

I know that. Jeee Susss. I'm sorry now I replied to something you said. I was trying to comfort you by saying you're not the only one who doesn't like this test.

I think from now on I'll just leave you with the fairies.

The problem with looking at the worldwide figures is that it includes countries like USA which is an absolute ****show at the moment. For example. Oklahoma has a population about 1 million less than Ireland but it has 1401 new cases today.

It also includes South America, which for various reasons (populist leaders, poor healthcare systems, corruption), are experiencing their own problems and may not be as effective as the EU countries at dealing with the virus.

This is from the ECDC's website today. Broadly speaking, the epicentre of the virus has moved from east to west across the planet from China. We are now seeing the epicentre in the Americas, which for reasons mentioned above, may take longer than the EU to become stable.

So just out of curiosity do you think people are behaving differently to what they were in February gone? And do you think they will drop that behaviour in winter?
It's almost like you are suggesting people have no idea what has happened and how to behave.

    Average last week: 21
    Average this week: 18.

I don’t think increase means what you think it doesn’t

I guess were just lucky that no kids are born March-August so we can prepare for the September onslaught.

Totally agree, social media has given idiots validity. In the past they were still idiots but were usually brought along with the rest of society. Now a whole subculture has emerged and we end up with things like Trump. Social media was SO good back in the day when only the nerds were really on it...now every dog on the street thinks their opinion is worthy and equal to anyone and everyone.

Riddle of the COVID superspreaders who infect hundreds

Why do some people pass the disease on to many, when others infect nobody ?

South Korea initially had the disease under control, then, a month in, Patient 31, a 61-year-old woman, went to church.

It is a phenomenon that will become more important the better the disease is controlled. It is called superspreading.

As a member of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Patient 31 believed that the apocalypse was imminent.

She went to church, feeling ill, seeking her salvation. We do not know if, as she sang along to hymns, a fine mist of saliva projecting into the congregation, she had doubts about her decision not to get tested.

We do know, however, that two days after she eventually did test positive, Patients 32 to 47 were linked to her.

A month later, Patients 48 through to 5,047 were linked to them and the outbreak was no longer controlled.

    !

That's a great a point. Can we think of other events which might be similar to a birthday parties that starts in September?

    anything at all?

    starts with S.

    Ends in L.

    Ok I'll help you out.

Nah I disagree with you and others on here but you are the old social media type. The new ones think Facebook counts as news and that the government wants to ID everyone but also to make you cover your face with a mask.

Anatomy of posts from the nay-saying, Covid minimizing, Social Darwinists here…

Whine endlessly about hysterical, curtain twitching, scaremongering, nervous Nelly doomsayers wallowing in misery, then moan about the economy or mental health.

Then shoot a few messengers (usually scientists or reporters).

Time to change the tune flu-bros ?

So one person infected 15? Those 15 went on to infect 5047?

    That's crazy.

If one person met 15 and each of them met 15 its not that crazy.
