A few weeks ago we had cases under 10. Past few weeks, maybe 20-30. Now it's 40. It's just increasing and not everyone going for tests when they should be.

Every reason to panic and get some control. We cannot afford the country shutting down. Just mask the fcuk up and stay away from people.

    You’re away with the fairies!!

Yup. On one hand it's good that we know and it's up to us to spread the word to family etc and try to get the media to realise, but like it's getting beyond the joke at this stage.

Besides the bulk Germany reporting at the beginning, this NEVER ever happened before 4 weeks ago.

Could it be down to the new government?

I don't know which would worry me more: Michael Martin guilty of skewing the figures or Michael Martin innocently reacting to them.

Why not read the comments above what you posted. The number is not 40 for one day. Somehow I suspect you already knew that.
    Panic achieves what exactly?

I wouldn't say it's the new government but something has definitely changed on the administrative side of weekend reporting in the last 4 weeks

16 positives refers to yesterday, they're included in today's figure

Control. Basically anything they tell the people not to do is more likely to be obeyed if the numbers are made out to be scary.

I just wish people would get used to this backlog crap now, Facebook and Twitter are like the armageddon hit ffs

The way the numbers are trending week to week in a few months time we could start seeing days where there are zero reported cases and deaths.

Of course the media won't report that all they'll show is the 40. I would nearly put my life savings on there being 10-15 cases again tomorrow.

It's so close to zero, we're a small island, it's so easy to just have a mandatory quarantine and we'd have zero cases, as soon as the country opens up it's gonna flair up again

Where do you see the daily positive test numbers (ie the 16 for yesterday) and what time each day is it updated?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,466 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

71 positive tests last 72 hours and 63 reported... lines up perfectly once again

Based on the total positive tests reported (29145) and the total confirmed cases (25925) it looks like 1/8 are people being tested twice and to a smaller extent denotifcations of duplicate cases.
So perhaps that's the difference between the 72hr figure of 71 positive tests and 63 reported.

If only we had a capable journalist to ask that question.

I know some time ago, there was a backlog of cases added which was down to one lab using a new chemical or something on those lines and the NVRL had to double check the tests to confirm everything was in order. Perhaps there's something going on like that over the weekend.

Or maybe private hospitals notify cases over the weekend but their positive samples have to be double checked? I'm sure there's a logical reason and not just to purposely inflate numbers on a Tuesday.

    Panic? Cut out the nonsense!

If we can keep the average of 20 positives a day for the next few weeks and months we will be doing phenomenally well. Improved treatments and a vaccine will follow shortly after. It was always about buying time and we are doing that.

The startling figures produced on a Tuesday seem to be by design in order to keep people on edge and keep their wits about them. Might be no harm intended but it is disingenuous.

Can someone explain the reasoning behind this Tuesday rise each week? ( as in officially, why are they saying this is happening each Tuesday?) I dont understand the reasoning apart from scaremongering. But we know from the data released over the weekend what the actual positive results are each day as per ACE info here every day...........Sorry Im just v confused!!

I've a feeling a lot of academic studies will be done in the coming years on the impact on the public's understanding of the country's state of the virus based on disingenuous / incomplete / over-simplied reporting.

To be fair the government want the economy opened so I don't see why they point towards indicators to delay this happening.

Do you honestly think that there are meetings occurring were a conspiracy is organised to manipulate numbers?

Ray Kennedy on RTÉ just reported the no new deaths and 40 cases and if you didn't know the underlying stats you'd think the cases have shot up. Disappointed in ray Kennedy as he's one of the best rte have so you'd think he'd clarify the number.

Ah right, so you note the total each day and subtract from the new total, thanks.

All the above could be true, it's just annoying that there's no transparency about it, allows the copy and paste media outlets to have a field day and the politicians to start fear mongering again.

People refusing tests is worrying, they should be forced, why refuse a free somewhat uncomfortable test

Is there any way of getting the 7 day average for the past few weeks?

Or a way of presenting the data that shows positive cases based on day of the test being taken?

This current way of reporting is creating confusion!

Yup its a fairly new issue, was flagged here a few weeks ago that something was off with the numbers. No idea why they decided to change the reporting method to this way.
