The scientists just want to control people - they want everyone wearing a face muzzell before introducing ID cards which identify you when you're wearing a mask.

Its not the scientists you want to get worried about as they are simply employees like the rest of us...

The folks who want your ID and Social Net already have it (and we all opted in).

    I would say high 30s low 40s

I would expect the same. Last Tuesday it was 36 cases.

But because this is Ireland we have problems with class sizes, we have always had this issue and I don't see how they are going to be able to social distance. Where is all this money going to come from for prefabs and extra teachers? Many schools don't even have hot water or even soap in the toilets. Going to be a nightmare.
The WHO (Mike Ryan) made the point that kids can only go back in an environment where there is low community transmission, and outbreaks can be quickly identified. We are as close to that as we will ever be in Ireland, so it is seen as "safe". There will be outbreaks, we are testing aggressively, community transmission is low - hopefully we should be able to control them, and if not the worst case is we go back to sending kids home.

Sending kids into school in the US is madness. It's just accelerating the virus in an environment where everything is already on fire. The sheer incompetence of the US response to the virus has meant they are loading risk on top of risk etc.

I don't know if you watch international news but Florida since they sent the kids back to school there has been a 23% increase in children needing hospitalisation.
"On July 16, the state had a total of 23,170 children ages 17 and under who had tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Florida Department of Health. By July 24, that number jumped to 31,150."

I agree kids do need to go back, not because they are watching porn and raping , but because lot of parents are getting fed up looking after them and letting them run wild. Many have found out that that the negative comments made at the parents teachers meeting about little Mary or Johnny being a little sh*te are actually true :D

Kids havent gone back to school yet in Florida though. Or anywhere in the US.

Personally, I'm pretty sure I'm sending my child back into school next month. But she attends a small private school with tiny class sizes (10 in her class last year). They will wear masks and social distane and also limit mixing between different classes. Parents can only do car drop offs and not enter the premises. Im happy that they can keep it under control in those circumstances. Blanket closures don't make sense. Some schools and areas will be able to go back to in person learning with minimal issues and everything possible should be done to make this happen. But this has become the latest political issue here now so apparently you have to be either for or against schools opening with no in between or nuance.

We have 196 active cases in Ireland. If we can't send our kids back to school now we never can as this virus will be around for years, possibly forever, even with a vaccine.

That's based off known statistics, it is undoubtedly higher than that.

I do agree though, other countries including our near neighbors have had schools re-opened for a long time and there hasn't been any catastrophic clusters.

Much of the furore here is undoubtedly due to the highly unionised teachers digging their heels in somewhat understandably in regards to safety. I grew up in over-crowded classrooms and honestly lots of unnecessary furniture had already been removed to cram us in, I really don't know how social distancing is going to work in reality in a classroom.

Much more practical is viewing no distancing as a risk that needs to be taken as educating children is mostly definitely a vital service, while providing safer measures for children who are in a high risk category or have family members in a high risk category.

The thing is children are simply not mature enough to take proper precautions and to be honest there's no way of forcing them either. Even with no distancing the vast majority of schools will not have a case in the full academic year but undoubtedly the second there is a case, the media will explode and many (including INTO and ASTI) will likely lobby for all schools to be shut again.

Known cases will always be all we have to go on. In 10 years the virus will still be out there and probably way less people will be tested (I doubt we will be testing 10k a day at that stage) and we can't shut schools forever.

From those figures it looks like the nursing/care homes have been well locked down and the elderly/vulnerable are taking good care of themselves.
