You're the deluded working class who has been manipulated by the rich mask producing industrialists into wearing a 50c DIY mask over your gob!

Shame on you, you make the cotton elite richer by buying a cotton T-shirt and making it into a mask! Wake up!

    (edit: sarcasm :))

I said earlier in a deleted post it's like Moore's Law. The stupidity of the arguments seems to double every week.

That's the Ri number - short for ridiculous, currently at 2. Halloween is up ahead too - expect a heap of protests against mask wearing ! :D

Let’s just pop in and see what the latest is in the Masks thread...oh, right.

Anyhoo, anecdote incoming. Most people seem to be wearing them in my local shops. To the point that when you see someone not wearing one they stand out.

I barely see anyone wearing the surgical ones anymore now. It’s mostly all cotton or some other fabric. Clearly a lot of DIY jobs too of varying quality :pac:

On the subject of masks themselves......I'm in HK, and it's been announced that from tomorrow masks are mandatory outdoors with no exemption for exercise. Bit annoying, especially in 35 degree heat, but will try a run with it tomorrow. Just need to go a bit slower I suppose

Any country that makes them mandatory outdoors with no qualifiers (like in a rave for example) is clearly off to la-la land. Are we going to do this 'going to the beaches is killing grannies' thing all over again, too? Going by this thread it won't be long before some will be looking for just that.

Edit: I suppose HK is quite a crowded place but still...

Imagine all the tears if that was done here. "Adults" here cant cope with wearing them on a bus/in a shop.

Have you seen how crowded Hong Kong gets? It’s one of the most densely populated areas of the world and they’ve never had a lockdown. 7.4 million living there, they’ve had 2,885 cases and 22 deaths. They been wearing masks and doing proper contact tracing since February. Mandatory masks outdoors is extreme and that’ll never happen in Ireland but I can see why they are doing it.

Cases have gone up over 100 for 6 days in a row in HK, with the first cases popping up in nursing homes as well. It's annoying obviously, especially as we've actually had measures in place since as far back as January.

Hopefully in a couple weeks cases will be down significantly; we'd had 0 local cases in 28 days to the start of July. Football pitches, cinemas, etc had all been opened up again, though it only lasted for roughly 3 weeks.

Ok fair enough. They are quite crowded over there in places.

Was stuff shutdown? It was my impression from a friend living there that most stuff stayed open.

It’s O Connell street on Paddy’s Day every day. I couldn’t live there.

Actually in exercise is probably more of a reason to wear a mask...
might be breathing heavier than normal, thus possibly propelling those droplets from your mouth further than the usual distance.

    https://health.clevelandclinic.org/should-i-wear-a-mask-outside/

Are the population densities on the streets very high in HK and social distancing isn't possible, and maybe the buildings block air flow?

The only time I've seen cases notes as being transmitted outdoors was a group doing yoga (?) with an instructor for a sustained amount of time.

I haven't read anything so far that makes a compelling case for general mask use outdoors.

Well, restaurants, shopping centres, etc all stayed open (with social distancing in place in restaurants). Schools were closed from January to June, same with football pitches, basketball courts, gyms, swimming pools, cinemas, etc. But there's never been a lockdown in the sense that you're restricted from leaving your home.

Exercising and wearing masks will be tough. We're lucky here, we're just being asked to wear a mask inside a shop or enclosed spaces and whip it off outside. They're not making things difficult for us here, it's so easy to wear a mask inside.

Local Dunnes yesterday evening about 50:50 wearing masks.
They have a guy regulating how many can enter the store, but apparently he is not checking on masks.

    Not good enough Dunnes!
I'll take my money somewhere else.

One of the reasons for masks being mandatory outside, is to put them on in safe manner. Usually at home, you put them on in safe environment, fit them properly, so you don't have to fiddle with them outside the shop after touching whatever on your way.

HK is an island/peninsula with one of the highest population densities in the world. I hope that addresses your concern. They'd been through Sars, Swine Flu and they know what they are doing.

That guy on the door working for minimum wage definitely is not paid enough to deal with the hassle of turning people away for not wearing masks.

I doubt 50:50 either, everywhere I've been in the last few days has been 80%+

Kinda seasonal for me, went twice to local Centra at the weekend. First visit, apart from three people all masked up, second visit was absolute minimum wearing masks.

Where are people buying decent quality plan black masks? I have white ones with my jobs logo on it but looking for a plain black one. Every site i check is either sold out or all mad designs.

Have a look on eBay, there's few from Irish sellers, so shipping should be quick.

I got good masks from a crowd called Stitch It Brand It - they are 7.50 each though but I feel they are good quality and as comfortable as a mask can be; 3 layers.

Not blaming the guy - blaming Dunnes and the authorities not being more proactive in enforcing it.

It was 50:50, (maybe even 40:60 no mask) I was shocked that's why I posted it.

As far as the letter of the law (and my understanding of it) goes, masks are have been recommended but there is no law compelling us to wear them so it's not on the supermarkets to enforce it. When it comes to these kinds of laws id always be in favour of giving people the chance to comply voluntarily rather than just bringing in laws and penalties for non compliance. Around where I live id say its 70% - 80% wearing them in shops now which is good enough imo.

Where do you live? Anecdotal again, but a colleague noted how mask usage was much higher in his home county than up in the Lidl in Ranelagh.
