If you choose to wear a mask, you must wear it correctly or you increase your risk of infection.

Where do the WHO state it is safer to wear no mask?

Work in English supermarket. Face coverings compulsory from yesterday. On my 9 hour shift only THREE customers I saw not wearing something. Pretty good...

It's highly irresponsible not to wear a mask - as it reduces your risk to others, as per WHO guidance.
    Do you agree?

Therefore, in line with WHO guidance, we must conclude that your chances of infection are reduced in a supermarket of mask wearers versus a supermarket of non mask wearers.
Even if you are fidgeting with your mask (and you should not be, but let's compare), as long as the mask is covering your mouth and nose, there will be less droplets for you to be at risk of infection from.

I really don't understand why you think it's ok for people to disregard WHO guidelines and touch their mask and face, thus contaminating / infecting themselves. Some of the pro-mask crowd on here are so bent out of shape, if I said grass was green, they'd disagree.

I was in a supermarket earlier, about 60% of people were wearing masks, a decrease on my previous visit.

I stopped for fuel and only 33% of people were wearing masks inside, 20% if you don't include the person that was wearing it on their chin and the person that was tying on their mask half-way through their time in the shop.

People don't seem to be buying what the fear mongers and doom merchants are selling.

When I saw so many today with a mask covering their mouth and not their nose I just thought how pointless this mask wearing is.

The pro-Mask crowd includes the WHO and CDC.
Do you agree that the WHO recommends that masks are worn in enclosed public places such as public transport and retail outlets such as supermarkets?

In formulating their advice that masks should be worn in enclosed public places, the WHO would know that not all people would follow mask etiquette correctly.
They would therefore have to weigh up the benefits of reduced droplets VERSUS the risks of people incorrectly following mask etiquette.
    Wearing masks means less droplets.
Your contention is that we shouldn't be wearing masks as people aren't following correct mask etiquette but touching the masks and touching items in the shops and therefore breaching hand sanitisation etiquette.

This is a respiratory virus. It's primary transmisson is through such mechanisms.
Surface to surface or fomite transmissions such as touching of masks and items in supermarkets is secondary.
    Not all risks are equals.
The evidence suggests the primary threat we should be worried about is such airborne droplets which can be inhaled or attach to your eyes NOT virus particles on surfaces.
This is borne out by the statistics for Irish cases in health and care settings when general mask wearing policy was rolled out. These places were following hand sanitisation etiqutte - it was not enough.

We can further conclude that the WHO and CDC change in position to recommend masks was the right one.
As is borne out by the reduction in virus spread in US states which adopted mandatory mask measures.
If your contention was that incorrect mask etiquette was the greater risk this could not have been the case.

Therefore, we can safely conclude that we should all be pro-masks.
    Masks protect those around us.
If you want to protect those around you wear a mask.

That we are safer with masks in general use.
That we are safer with mandatory masks in enclosed places.

When I saw so many today with a mask covering their mouth and not their nose I just thought how pointless this mask wearing is.

Even then it covers your primary orifice that emits infectious viral droplets - coughs, specks of saliva, and your breath (if exhaling through mouth).
Of course, they should be wearing it over both mouth and nose.

All the evidence from here and abroad is that it's not pointless.
Unless Irish people are uniquely stupid when it comes to masks, we can see that case numbers dropped when specific US states adopted mask wearing rules.
All the evidence you continue to ignore.

If you said a mask was a key ingredient in Covid prevention and a return to normality, I could fully get behind that.

Masks are mandatory in Spain almost everywhere including beach and cases are soaring. Most US wear masks also and cases are soaring. Explain this to me please?
Don't want to argue just stating facts
Meanwhile in Ireland most people are not wearing them and we are doing extremely well.

Most people are not wearing them? Have you been outside in the last two weeks, clearly not if that's your view on it.

Has it occured to you that these people have been in a shop where masks are compulsory and are on their way to another place where they need to wear a mask? Also maybe they don't want to take off the mask until they get home and can safely dispose of it.

    Yeah sure.

And how do u safely dispose biohazard materials at home?

There's a few on here that have already admitted that they re-use the disposable one-time-use medical masks. Apparently that's ok though because they say so.

    Have a read of this:

Summary, failure to social distance, clubs reopening, no contact tracing.

Yeah, and social distancing and good hygiene is being ****ed out the window thanks to all the noise about mask wearing. The basics are being forgotten about.
