Guidelines for return to school have already been issued.

Schools needed to be working on these from the moment they were issued.

Instead they'll be scratching their heads on the day before they are due to reopen.

Waiting for more guidelines is not the solution, they need to start working with what they have for now.

The excuses won't wash if the schools aren't ready.

I'd love to find anyone who works in a school who thinks that those 'guidelines' are worth the paper they are printed on. Insufficient is the word for them, lacking in any practical guidance.

Teachers arnt going back into an unsafe environment. There is no way anyone should expect them to. There is two ways this virus spreads. In enclosed environments for long periods of time and no possibility for social distancing.

What exactly do you want from them?

Get management to get a Covid response plan
    Buy hand rub
    Stagger breaks
    Move on

GAA is back now three weeks
20 odd kids running around in groups outside
 have you actually gone through the GAA return to play guidelines? You do know each child has to log on each time they turn up and confirm their health questionnaire? You do know there's a Covid officer for each team, and they train and play outside.

Honestly, talk about comparing apples and oranges. If you're going to try your hand at trolling, you're going to have to up your game a bit.

OK but if you actually read the post before pointing the finger and accusing me of bullying then you'd see I said there's no reason why teachers wouldn't be expected to be at their workplace regardless of whether students are there.

Some think they will still be working from home, I don't see why they would be.

Teachers themselves can social distance among themselves, how is that unsafe if they had an entire classroom to themselves?

There is no need for guidelines. This is how the virus spreds. We have seen it now over and over. So, we have the option of saying teachers are going to have to put themselves at massive risk or else we will have to protect them and do teaching safely, blended learning and online. Simple really. Instead of posting on here start looking up teaching methods. :D

I heard from a teacher friend at the weekend. Talk in the virtual corridors is that a 12 month gap year is on the cards. Not unreasonable when phase 4 delay, no plan delivered, construction sites closed and travel from safe destinations banned. The Government is considering a voucher scheme to pay babysitters.

Many businesses have the same protocols in place, you go for a sandwich sit in at your local cafe and your name and phone number will be taken.

It's a little extra effort so we can all get on with things.

Soccer club here has a contact sheet for all attendees and requirement to bring own hand sanitiser etc dressing rooms and bathrooms are off limits.

Children don't have a problem with these rules so why should adults?

I don't think it's fair to say there's many people here looking for excuses not to return to work. Pointing out that the Department of Education need to do their job is hardly unreasonable. Guidance is needed and expected. No point in pretending it isn't.

A 100 kids could run together outside and there is minimal risk. But, inside in a n enclosed environment with poor ventilation the virus spreads. Why dont you understand that????????

    1/ Return to work protocol

    2/ Creches guidance

    3/ July Provision guidance

Indoors, in a classroom, 2 teams? Wow, what club is that? Don't think I'd be signing up.

As I already said upthread none of those address issues specific to second level. These issues need addressing why have you a problem with that?

Class rooms in Ireland are not safe. They are not safe for teachers and for kids taking the virus into the community and spreading it.

People using the GAA/summer camps comparison is driving me insane. You are talking about groups of kids OUTDOORS. It's widely acknowledged that outdoor transmission is virtually nil. It's simply wrong to compare 30 kids running around outdoors to 30 kids in a cramped Irish classroom with little or no ventilation. Yet people keep bringing it up as a reason for kids to go back.

    Yes GAA is back OUTSIDE

    Im Covid supervisor in GAA

Thanks for the advice, have handrub but sanitizer much better. discussing staggered breaks but difficult in a school of nearly 1000 children some of them will be having breaks just after arriving but we will figure it out.

Not all teachers have classrooms to themselves and just because you dont so why doesnt mean it wont happen.

Doubt it's on any WhatsApp group except your imagination.

What part of my posts did you consider bullying?

All of the above applies to teachers who are parents as well, so do you think they will also have to give up work or go on covid payment if they can't attend work as you put it?

Genuine question, where do you get all the time to be ridiculously bitter towards teachers online? I mean its obviously an irrational obsession to which you dedicate most of your waking hours.

Should you not be homeschooling your children instead with this valuable time to make up for the poor job that the teachers have done?

Fair play Mickey. Any other news for us when you're at it? Is there any other type of gap year other than a 12 month one?

There's no reason why teachers won't be expected to be onsite in school in September, whatever about students doing a partial week the teachers will be able to be in school without any social distancing issues between themselves.

I think any teacher planning on working from home from September needs to be fully prepared for the likelihood that they will be required onsite for at least their usual school workday.

    Why wouldn't they be?

We have been told we will be in site as per usual. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be.

I am still preparing for wfh however. There are many scenarios where the school will be closed entirely and we are all landed back at home. Even teachers.

I worked out of 9 different classrooms last year.

Imagine our healthcare workers took the same view as some here.

    Or essential workers.

We would all be dead by now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,813 ✭✭✭the corpo

Roads aren't safe, should we ban travel on roads?

No, but we put in speed limits, seat belts, traffic lights etc to mitigate the danger.

People need to stop comparing, and just focus on the specifics.

Asteroids aren't safe, should we ban space?*

*That was a little shirty of me, but I'm letting it fly

Imagine our healthcare workers were left with no guidelines/PPE/safety measures...

^I do take your point though. I just wish people would accept that no one here has answers. It's all endless speculation until the Dept issue guidelines and funds so we can get stuck in and get ready for the new school year.
