Great news about the pubs staying shut

You looking for a reaction or are you genuine?

    TBH I'm not unhappy either.

We are being led to the Continental way of having food and drink anyway, it's obvious. Just like McDowell tried to introduce back in the day, but of course the wet pubs won then. I don't think they have the same power anymore, but I could be wrong.

MUP is still on the cards last time I looked which is only going to benefit the pubs.

My guess is they'll be a jump in numbers tomorrow (that Martin knows ) and hence todays decision

    My heart bleeds for them.

Let us see, the big huge places with opening windows and huge beer gardens will be fine. The small poky dark places, not so much. Qui Bono?

That will never happen in Ireland. We have restaurants for people that want to eat and have a glass of wine.

    The pub is for drinking.

I know, and it is such a part of our culture. Smaller establishments might suffer of course and they are/were the epitome of the pub scene really, not the mega places.

    We shall see what happens.

I think it's a great decision to keep pubs closed.
If people fancy a couple of pints then they can surely afford to have a bite to eat at the same time.

We need to move away from the piss head stereotype that we have on our shoulders and grow up a bit around our attitude to bringe drinking in isolation.

Every crisis presents an opportunity to rethink and improve things and how we socialize can be one of these things.

“This is a shocking decision not to proceed with the planned reopening of pubs and will be a hammer blow to thousands of pubs and their local communities around the country.

"The vast majority of these pubs are small rural outlets run by families who are on first-name terms with their customers and far removed from the crowded venues that concern NPHET," said VFI Chief Executive Padraig Cribben.

Publicans are reeling from this news. They did everything asked of them by remaining shut for over four months and our members had a reasonable expectation the sector would reopen next Monday. All other phases went smoothly so to now tell publicans they can’t open like the rest of the hospitality sector makes little sense. This is a decision made by politicians who appear divorced from reality about life in rural Ireland," he added.

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/hammer-blow-pub-reopening-plans-postponed-until-august-10-while-new-rules-clamp-down-on-house-parties-39370745.html

Absolute disgrace. 4 full months - going to 5 MONTHS. FIVE MONTHS! FIVE MONTHS LOCKDOWN. The only country on the planet to have a certain business sector shut down for 5 months.

And why? Because NPHET got concerned that number of cases on Monday was <20 and on Tuesday <40?? That's the increase? Well bloody 14 new cases today. I cant believe that in mid July we are even discussing covid............... we are talking about 0.004% of population being active live covid cases, and govt makes a decision to keep businesses shut for 3 more weeks, and over 30,000 pub staff alone staying home for 3 more weeks.

It seems like Gerry Killeen finally got his way, Ireland is attempting to eradicate the virus, with M Martin and Leo (both ex health ministers) at the helm.

You can go into a cafe in Porto or Lisbon at midnight on a weekday and buy a bottle of beer. Or go to a pub and get a pint. If its late they could be showing South American football on the television

Continentals don't always sit down to a meal with their friends every time they want a drink.

Not sure how well a cafe-bar culture would work in a cold, wet country like Ireland.

Jesus Christ, the decision would have been no different no matter who was in government today .

Sure about that? Varadkar indicating yesterday we would be moving to phase 4 Monday, yet cabinet reversed today. What new data reversed that? There is nothing in any data presented to justify reversing the decision and it can only be explained by inherent conservatism. We have plotted the right course until now, but if every slight blip, which as many people have said is as likely down to statistical anomalies as any underlying trend, is treated as a reason to reverse course we will be in utter chaos for the next 12 to 18 months opening and shutting things to every little shift in data. This is not going away until a vaccine is here and the only way to deal with is plot a stable, rationale course as we have been until now. Everything that has been done has given us 3 to 4 weeks breathing space to assess and react to any adverse trends. We have jumped after a few days. NPHETs job is to be conservative, the governments job is to take on board that and other advice and plot a rationale course.

I can see that on August 10 they gonna implement futher restrictions - all restaurants, gyms, hotels, hairdressers, pubs serving food will be ordered to close as we'll need to eradicate the virus. Fair play to MM and the company !

I think we need to rethink our whole society. We need to move forward on the basis that we get each female over the age of 14 pregnant and just grow potatoes.

    What could possibly go wrong?

What about the thousands out of work as a result?

In this country, people are free to socialize however they please, while obviously obeying the law.

If you don’t like something, just don’t do it.

People don't follow laws they don't respect. I think the govt has misjudged the mood badly here and are about to lose a huge amount of support and buy in from the general public.

The problem being that those disaffected people won't just ignore stupid horse**** like €9 meals, but now that they don't agree with the need they will ignore all of the requests being made.

I went to the cinema this evening. Enjoyable. One way in and a different way out, hand sanitizer on entry, staff wearing face masks, every other row cordoned off. It's never very busy anyway so not much difference really.

Went for food tonight in the city centre - my first time in town since March. Perfectly enjoyable meal. The restaurant had inserted some screens between some tables to allow people to feel more comfortable and it worked.

Town itself seemed pretty busy. Popped on the mask for a browse in 'Fallon & Byrne' (it's a very narrow shop, so it makes sense there in particular) and maybe half the customers were wearing masks.

On the train into town and back seemed broadly good compliance except once *again* young people were far and out the worst offenders. Any in groups seemed either not to bother or felt the need to pull it off their faces when they talked which of course misses the whole bloody point.

Yes lets defer this next phase, tack on some extra requirements in current phase, disrupt Irish lives further. But sure look, we'll keep letting the Americans in and do what they please.

I think from reading some of these posts that people are near breaking point.

I have to say can't understand delay on opening pubs if social distancing can be maintained. No more risky than people going to restaurant or cafe.

The new rule on face masks is just ridiculous. By the way I have no problem whatsoever with asking people to wear them on public transport or say going to hairdressers as in these instances people in very close contact for extended period but we have all being doing grocery shop for months with no increase whatsoever in rate so its obviously not a cause whatsoever of spreading it.

Not one of staff I see ever week in Dunnes has been out during this whole crisis so shopping is not a super spreader.

We need to take a serious look at the overall effect this is having on mental health of people especially young people. Unfortunately I am aware of 3 suicides in wider community in last two weeks of people in their twenties. We need to stop demonising this age group for meeting up etc.

What are we actually trying to achieve because I'm at a loss to understand it anymore.? We cant eradicate virus. We have to learn to live with it. If we give people no hope of a return to some type of normality I think mental health issues will bypass any covid deaths + unfortunately they also tend to be young people.

Enough is enough we have to try and get on with life.

    I am so upset.

I just dont understand how? How are businesses still being kept closed? Have we not had a great victory in flattening the curve, what we've been asked to do? What thousands of businesses been asked to do? Curve was flattened back in 2nd week of May.

2 deaths WITH covid this week so far. On average, over 70 people died from cancer alone this week. Perspective is a good thing to have.

We are keeping over 30,000 out of work for this? 3 more weeks? 3 more weeks for what? for some cowards to feel "safer"??? For "medical advice" crowd to feel better about what absolute massacre of SME businesses has been conducted in Ireland?

You have hundreds of thousands, millions actually, of healthy people wearing masks for absolutely no reason. For a "suspicion that they could have covid and start sneezing uncontrollably in other peoples faces". Absolute rubbish. Washing hands 10 times + a day? This is a definition of paranoia.

We live in a republic of medical advice, not the republic of Ireland.

Ireland doesn't seem like a free country anymore. As the virus disappears the government continue to ristric normal life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭completedit

No more. Absolutely no more. What is the end game in all this? The virus is not going away. It's time for people to face the reality that people die and dying of Covid is no more unnatural than any of the other multitude of ways nature eventually brings our time on earth to an end. In all walks of life there are multitude of risks associated with the day to day of being, why now has the virus, which has been shown to be have extremely low mortality rates upending our whole lives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,503 ✭✭✭showpony1

It seems panic is worse now that there are less cases for some reason - everyone in masks where as they weren't before?
why is it now they are required on bus and weren't before?

i thought this was pretty much over now i've to wear a mask everywhere and cancel plans for a trip to galway for a few pubs.

is the wearing of masks mandated when you are having food and pints for 105 mins?

Those pubs on same lane have a lot to answer for. Reckon the mercantile and stags head and the other bars there should be boycotted. They are the reason for the extension
