I go away on holiday to stay somewhere nice not live in a shack

(p.s. won't be going back to Dingle any time soon anyway - one of the most overpriced places in Ireland)

I'm sure the people of Dingle will be devastated.

Stupid comment tbh. I went on holiday to Italy last year with my wife. Car hire, flights and accommodation total cost for 10 days was €900.
I have looked at some so called deals here in Ireland, €350 for 2 days. I will be on a flight as soon as no non essential travel advice is lifted.

    €900 and Covid19, that's a bargain alright.

Coming from someone scared of catching it from their own shadow

The €900 refers to last year. I will be travelling to Naples in August if non travel advice is lifted. Is contracting Covid guaranteed?

I’m all for international travel but not sure why people are concerned about the airlines here - they’ve shown very little care for people over the last few weeks. Horror stories on the internet about different airlines threatening customers with no refunds and forcing people to fly. I’ve no sympathy for the companies.

There is the unfortunate knock on effect for the employees but, to be honest, something has to change as regards constant cheap flights all around the globe. We are absolutely wrecking this planet. Something has to give.

Also, mass tourism. Even before Covid, many cities started to react against this strongly. Venice, Barcelona etc. I was in Lisbon a few years ago and saw quite a bit of anti tourist graffiti.

Who in their right mind would spend 20k for a week with the kids in Kerry? Saw load of people posting that they have booked 2 weeks in cancun 4 star all inclusive with flights at the end of August for 1500 pp. very tempting.

If you can't afford a holiday here on the island you can't afford a foreign one either. There's accomodation within everyones budget.

Yes but what you get for your Euro abroad gets you a far better deal

Irish hotels answer to been closed for months, instead of doing the sensible thing and having sales, is to charge an arm and a leg

The sensible thing to do would be a sale and try to break even or take a bit of a loss this year, and then a small profit next year and build on that

They're a joke and they deserve the wake up call they'll get this and next year when many of them go out of business

There's no medium term vision with them, let alone a long term one

Tomorrow the travel restriction within the country is being lifted. If i were you i’d be more worried about that for the moment.

Galway was €450 for 2 nights.

    Wow

I haven't holidayed in Ireland for year and now I know why

    Ahh, your grand.

Cancun could return to “red” in the face of Covid’s rise

Rule of thumb, stay away from the Americas for a bit.

Really? A cursory, half arsed search shows Galways can be had for half that price in nice city centre hotels, over the weekend.

Couldn't care less about your half arsed search. Did the same myself last week and it was €450 2 nights B&B + 1 evening meal. Was the best deal we could find and booked it so yeah really.

Still not value for money but it'll do until we go to Lanzarote

Book something within your budget and stop bashing..

Lots of businesses have additional running costs, loans to pay back, people to pay to clean and maintain - they all have to families and mouths to feed...

If you can't afford it then don't bother looking at it, plenty can afford it and they'll book it without a blink of an eye lid.

the same types of businesses abroad will have similar types of outgoings - just perhaps at a lower scale. Ireland is not a cheap place to live; therefore it is not a cheap place to holiday at the best of times. You can possibly find a place to rent reasonably cheap, but doubt it will be salubrious nor well located.

It won't be easy to find somewhere to book for dinner, especially at short notice, with social distancing in place - that won't be much use to families with kids, who want to eat NOW! So then you're probably looking at cooking in your less than well equipped kitchen, without the well stocked pantry you have at home, on a (probably)reduced set of cookware than you're used to - I don't see the point, personally.

Normally would do a couple of long weekends around the country, camping, Airbnb. Not worth the hassle at the moment until things become a bit more settled. Supposed to be going to Italy next week for 2 weeks. Flights were cancelled in early June, voucher for accommodation moved to next year, will rebook next year as soon as flights become available for same weeks 2021. In the meantime have a week in Kerry booked for October bh week. Fingers xxd things will be more settled at that stage, and the pubs, restaurants etc have learnt to operate in the new way. Or at least will know for sure, and plan out everything we need to bring to cook what we need in the Airbnb.

I always try to book apartments when on holiday (abroad)

Dingle - 2k for the week

I could book 2 weeks away in the Carribean for that AI

Where is this magical place you can get flights and accommodation for 4 people in the Caribbean for two weeks for less than 2k? Compare equivalent if you are making comparisons

Come on now nobody has been in a pub or restraunt for months they can afford a week or two here if they were saving for holidays.

Just because they haven't been to a pub or restaurant doesn't mean people are flash with cash.

I haven't been to work since March, and taking home 66% less in pay every week.

I still have mouths to feed and cloth, bills still need paying.

The holiday I had planned has been cancelled, awaiting the refund.

Ah but sure, I haven't been to a pub or restaurant in months so I can afford a week or two on holiday around Ireland.

Well don't complain if you can't manage a basic Internet search and then pay over the odds. Value to be found.

They charge what they can get - like any business. Not defending them but people are paying it, otherwise the rooms would be empty and they’d lower prices.

And a long thread in the Travel forum just got closed for discussing too much Covid  Utterly baffling

The fact is there'll be loads of overlap between the two of them for the next few months at least

That search was for two people and not four, and prices come in around the 1 - 1.5k per person on average.

Still doesn't add up to under 2k.

I never said anything about 4 people and comparing it to a week in Ireland I'm not gonna complain about paying ever so slightly over 1k each

    People are paying it?

Why are the vast majority of Irish still looking at a holiday abroad this year then?

It's typical short term thinking nonsense from Irish hotels and it'll come back to bite them in the arse
