Yes 2 of us Killarney ( not the Park) 2 nights 500 eu , but it's a special occasion, so we're worth it!

Bit of a difference between a special occasion and a family trip away, would always spend that bit more for a special occasion.

Nonetheless hope you enjoy the break away for the occasion

There have been several big contracts already signed for vaccines. Astra Zeneca alone is planning on 1.4 billion doses minimum, similarly Moderna/Lanza 1 billion (minimum), J&J probably another billion or two then you have Pfizer, Sanofi, Innovio etc. That's also not counting what the Chinese will do with their vaccines, I expect them to produce billions of doses also.

I'll be first in line for the vaccine when it's available to me, both for me personally and for my community. If other people don't want to get it, that moves me up the line - happy days. Will probably book a holiday abroad for the week after :) The Oxford/Astra Zeneca vaccine in particular is based on existing technology already used in vaccines provided by them, as are some of the others such as J&J, Sanofi etc.

I’ll be 2m behind you in the Queue for it!

I know it's a five star hotel for 7 nights for 2 adults and 2 children but it's hard not see that as price-gouging.

I get supply and demand but not sure that the demand from people already living here outmatches all the tourists that would usually come from UK, US, Germany, France etc. But guess they could still be booking assuming they can arrive by late July.

And I know cost of living generally more expensive here so set the prices accordingly but you'd wonder how much of it goes on staff wages and how much is profit.

Yes , it is mad money , and when they need people in Ireland to holiday here , to support the industry .
Not making it easy with the premium put on everything .

There's a lot of talk about resurgence in the southern US but is it not just because of increased testing? Deaths in the US are still trending downard, albeit very slowly. But if the new cases we are seeing in Texas etc were truly growing at that rate and not just as a result of increased tests uncovering them wouldn't we be seeing very pronounced and proportionate increase in deaths in recent days. But there isn't , deaths are only slightly higher on average in Texas now than in weeks prior

Texas average deaths last 7 days, 27

Average daily deaths in late May 20

Hotels have always paid their staff very poorly, and not just in Ireland from my experience, so not down to staff costs.

Sorry what is a phylo tree?

Heard about one person in ICU in CUH , but Tomas Ryan was talking about another in the Bons in Cork in February as well on that podcast with Eamonn Dunphy , so that is the only link I have for it .

apologies delay in time it takes for posts to show up here. It is like a geanological family tree for the virus.
When they analyse the covid virus in a number of cases and look at the slight mutations they can trace back how it came to/ linked to a country.
eg some might be linked cork from hong kong from beijeng from wuhan etc
Then they can be put in a big graph

    https://nextstrain.org/ncov

Has all of them and you can search for Ireland there.

I think its a combination of increased testing and a moderate growth in spread because the positive test rate is also going up. But then I also read that not all negative tests are being reported in some states (Florida is one) so that accounts for that too. All we can do is wait and see what happens.

Even with regards texas and hospitals, doctors there today are saying they're actually OK so far and that the fear of being overwhelmed is "unwarranted" as of now. Not what some would have you believe but thats what they're saying. Also, as of a couple of days ago at least, coronavirus patients were a small percentage of the total beds in use, and not the majority.

    https://www.click2houston.com/news/local/2020/06/25/houston-hospital-leaders-discuss-capacity-has-coronavirus-cases-rise/

What I've found is that for every scary headline you see, there is usually a less alarmist explanation for it if you look into it further.

I holidayed here in Ireland years ago 1996 when my oldest was 6. Went to Kerry for a few days, I forgot the KY jelly. I have never holidayed in this country since. Ironically I have enjoyed holidays in Italy every year since 2004 and will be back there in August. I know I'm going to be ripped off here but it's nice to escape it for a couple of weeks.

The percentage of postive tests over the last fortnight has doubled from 4.5% to 9% and hospitalisations are rising also.

So I think it's fair to say that it's growing and increased numbers aren't solely down to increased testing.

Seems we are picking up the vast majority of possible spreaders before they even get a chance to move around.

Reminder we are one of a very very small number of countries who do Day 0 contact testing.

What is day 0 contact testing?

All close contacts get tested on day 0 (when they receive the contact tracing phone call) and day 7 in Ireland

The Phase 3 announcement doesn't mention anything (that I see anyway) about travelling within Ireland.

    Is the restriction lifted?

Deaths will be weeks after cases, these huge rises are mainly in last 10 days , so may be yet to come. Alot more younger people contracting it so may end up as less deaths but at what cost to health down the road , nobody really knows. I would also hope that lessons have been learnt from the earlier states and nursing homes are being protected ( although i am sure we will see more incidences like New Jersey where they have unearthed another 1800 odd probable deaths )

Florida residents have their say on a proposition about wearing face masks ahead of a vote by the Palm Beach County commissioners in Florida.

Florida has had 137,152 cases with 3,329 deaths, and the case numbers are rising at over 5,000 per day.

You can find good deals in Ireland if you look for them. I will be Staying in a beautiful massive house with my family for less then 130e a night In Wexford. There’s a lot available in different parts at reasonable prices. It’s no less expensive then the accommodation we were getting in France that wasn’t a house!

We usually go abroad for the weather, don’t believe it’s wise now with all the uncertainty going on. I’d rather be closer to home if something changes or one of my family gets a bad dose.

An article about Professor Michael Baker an epidemiologist with the University of Otago and the author of New Zealand’s exemplary response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In February 2020 he was advocating with colleagues at the University of Otago to 'stamp out' COVID-19 and keep it out, rather than trying to 'flatten the curve'. The Government eventually introduced a strict countrywide lockdown.
