Used Derreen Declan here a bit, decent heifers but very plain bulls, easy calved but wouldn’t use him again.

I think Earp is a very good bull, not the milkiest but good muscle and shape to them, easy calved on cows.

EASY SO FAR, HAVE USED HIM MORE THIS YEAR. CALFS ARE VERY GOOD AND GREAT COLOUR. His SIRE Wizard is a great bull with loads of Milk

You’d want plenty of muscle and shape in a heifer/cow to be using fifty cent on.
He breeds very average cattle with bad ends off plain animals.
I wouldn’t be a fan of him anyway, Sunnyboy was a far better bull.

How are Fiftycent Daughters for Milk. they thrive very well but not great shape surely

hopefully the pics are there now

That’s some cow to do that job and she’s in good condition herself. You’d want to wean them very soon. They’re super calves. What’s her breeding?

The poor cow, she must be well sick of them by now. She’s done a great job on them.
    What’s Gunshot like for calving?

ha ha...yeah she'd kick them off if she could, I'd say....they'll be coming off this weekend, she's due to calve again in late august...

I had 4 cows to gunshot last year and all calved unassisted.

    Lads,

I'm thinking of keeping the red one as a bull to breed replacements. He's polled also.

Am I mad or is it worth a go? There's a great dam line going back and he's a good shapey SI, with nice markings?

    What do you lads think?

Great calf but personally I’d have reservations about keeping on a twin bull

Why not a twin? You don't want more twins, if it's in the breed?

Actually I had 5 cows to gunshot last year, and there was 2 sets of twin bulls out of the 5 and 3 single heifirs. One of the others twins was born dead though.

Blamed myself as she had a very short dry period, and she was a 3yo second calver. So might have been a bit too hard on her.

I was wondering if lads would consider keeping a commercial calf for breeding?

It would want to be an exceptional animal to work well.
Quality can be variable and all sorts of colors can result.

What causes twins in cows? Is it the cow, the bull or a combination? I was talking to my vet about this as I’ve a cow who has a habit of throwing twins but I couldn’t get a conclusive answer from him.

I’d agree with Tanko here. I’d be afraid of a heap of twins too with him.

Think it's in the breed in some situations, from either sire or dam. Sometimes it could be other factors. I had 5 sets last year, which is more than the previous 15 years combined. The vet reckoned the good weather in the autumn of 2018 when the autumn calvers were being bulled was the main reason

Interesting to hear your views. Think I'm going to give him a go on about 10 cows. I've a good pb charolais bull that'll look after most of the herd. I'm thinking this lad will bring heifers for replacements..... Think I'd be happy to have heaps of twins.... My cows are fairly miky..... Time will tell...

No, that bulls progeny would have a higher proportion of twins but not him.

It’s the cow. She needs to produce an extra egg when she ovulates

Well sure give him a go and see what happens. Be very interesting to see what way it works out you should make a thread and update us. What breeding is your ch bull, I presume you get most of your replacements another way? Ai sim?

I'll get back in a couple of years, please God.... and let you know how it goes... To be honest I think he'll breed good replacements, because I know his mother and grandma tick all the boxes. And gunshot seems to be good also.

Only have first crop of calves from the ch and very happy. Plan on keeping him as long as possible. So won't keep his heifers on. The plan is to keep the twin for a few years, get round 20 heifirs from him and move him on then. Mostly keep si cows.

The ch is by Vera Cruz and dam by inverlocy ferdie..... He's very easy calved, no problem on 2yo heifers and nice shapey calves. I'll attach a picture of him.

Super bull and VCZ was easy calving
Good plan on not keeping the CH heifers, they’re worth allot as weanlings and you’ll have the SI
CHxSI is a great cross & the milkier the dam the better
Best of luck & be good to hear how you get on

She's a simmental herself out of a Lim. Don't know what simm bull. Guy that bought last years heifer from the same cow, has her booked to buy already.
I'm trying to convince him to keep her.

Looks like a fine heifer. What age is she there? When do you plan on putting her in calf?
