Well, the HSE are looking at revamping pretty much everything, including the patched up testing system and the care home sector. The approach in future would be to hit it hard if it reappears. More tools will come on-stream to help with that.

    Such as?

Better knowledge, more treatments, more focused localised approach, rapid response, tracing apps and better protection for at risk environments.

He wasn't screeching either, advise is what I have read and heard. Maybe screeching is how you feel he was behaving although I thought you were against 'feelings'.

    HSE Operations report just released.

As of 18:30 21 in ICU, an increase of 1 on the previous 24hrs.

As of 8pm 50 paitents in general beds, down 12 on yesterday.

Shame about ICU after no admissions since June 9th, but dropping another 12 in general beds is really positive. I thought it would slow a lot more at these lower numbers, yet 20% less than the day before.

Yeah I thought if it hit 50 on Friday we would be doing well. Hopefully 40 or less for the weekend

Realistically every country is going to have cluster outbreaks here and there but life will just have to continue alongside them. Most developed countries have their **** together when it comes to contact tracing and getting people to isolate so clusters aren't much of a concern in the grand scheme of things.

If our numbers continue in the current vein we could well see a day soon where we have under 100 active known cases which for all intents and purposes is pretty much a total eradication.

The two travellers to New Zealand show that realistically no country can fully suppress and eliminate the virus until a proper vaccine is found. The simple objective has to be to avoid the health service getting over run and if this continues, COVID will actually begin to slip off the news. Don't forget there's a US presidential election this year and Fianna Fail are back in government.

It also shows that having people quarantine at least gives a country a fighting chance at containing a damaging outbreak.

The PM there has changed the leadership of the quarantine / border operations as a result of the failing. The two people apparently left the quarantine facility and saw friends before testing positive.

If that happened here. There’s no real check , there’s no real quarantine. God knows how many people would have been exposed before they got a test result back. In their case you are depending on people to do the right thing. Most will but you only need a couple not to and it’s seeds a new outbreak.

Most western european countries implemented proper lockdown.

    Many other places did not.

The gains are only temporary for those who took the measures.

Ultimately life has changed until a definitive vaccine can be produced and that's not certain. But they'll soldier on.

The positive thing is that at this stage the population is getting adjusted to the changes in society.

There are some mandatory actions that need to be introduced like on face masks but I think the public are adjusting well.

    WTF?

No, they work it's irrefutable, it's nothing to do with feelings or emotions FFS!

It's the reason Harris has spent the last week screaming at people to wear them after spending 3 months convincing us they were useless and could actually spread the infection.

I'm sorry, but its not irrefutable, otherwise Czech Republic etc would have lower transmission rates than we do. What I believe is being done is public health are trying to get the use of masks ingrained, so that as things get back towards normal, having widespread use of masks will be a useful additional tool to help avoid lockdown / keep public transport running etc. in the event of a significant new outbreak

The latest Chinese outbreak is a puzzle.
The link to the market has triggered comparisons to the seafood market in Wuhan that played a role at the early stages of the pandemic, and speculation that the virus arrived in fish imported from Europe. But the real source of the outbreak is still a mystery.

I found it interesting that the patient in France, who they retrospectively discovered was infected mid-december, was a fishmonger. Media seem to focus more on his wife working in a supermarket near Charles De Gaulle Airport.

The wearing of masks on public transport and in enclosed public spaces needs to be made mandatory. No more pussyfooting around the issue just bring it in. Exemptions from wearing masks can be given to anyone with genuine medical issues re.the use of them provided they have certificates stating this.

I don't understand why so many people are not wearing face masks when they're shopping.
They must be watching too much fox news.
I wear one and have no problem with it. I take it off when I get back into my car.
It is a simple thing to do and it does stop the infections spreading.

Denmark looking to open up to countries with low infection rates around Europe.

They have ruled out Portugal and Sweden for consideration.

We tend to overlook the situation in Portugal which continues to report 100's of new cases per day.

Meanwhile, Indonesia reports it's highest daily case load yet with 1,337 new cases.

South Korea reported 59 new cases overnight.

Australia has announced it will not reopen its borders to foreign travel until next year.

A friend of mine lives in Australia and was told by a Doctor back at the end of March that it would be March 2021 before they will be able to travel again (I posted it back then in another thread I think) - looks like that Dr was right.

Seafood even cropped up elsewhere if I remember early on when they where looking for an intermediate host species then dissapeared from the radar. I remember at the time saying that people should stay away from dophins incase they were asymtomatic or pre symtomatic and it would make the dophins sick. No proof yet at all that seafood has anything to do with covid.

Totally agree. We have learnt an awful lot in the last few months. Death rate will only reduce over time.

Walk into pub with face mask on.
    Sit down, order food.
Wait for order to be brought to table.
    Sanitize hands.
Take off mask and place into plastic bag.
    Sanitize hands again.
    Eat food/drink.
When finished, sanitize hands again and put on a clean face mask.

Need to go to the toilet? Sanitize hands and put on a clean face mask. Go back to your table and sanitize hands and take off mask and put into plastic bag.

Look how easy that process is. They can work if you want them to.

The situation in Portugal is odd. Consistently 200 to 300 cases for the last few weeks, with no major spikes and it's not getting better or worse. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Thank you for an explanation of the mechanical aspects however your response does not deal with the concerns of those that want masks worn in a confined space.

I can't believe that masks are not being made mandatory on public transport.
    It's a no-brainer.

About 60% think we are through it and that the infection has gone, there have been no huge reverses during these easing phases plus numbers are heading toward zero quite steadily. Add to that the message from the briefings that it is under control.

These are the first set of guidelines for when pubs reopen.

    The guidelines for pubs state:

    - Disposable or laminated menus that can be easily cleaned should be used.

    - Single use rather than shared condiments should be provided.

    - Customers should be seated at a table except when using the toilet, paying and departing.

    - Regular announcements will be made to remind customers to follow social distancing advice and clean their hands regularly.

    - Smoking areas should have limited capacity.

    - A strict queuing system should be in place for toilets to ensure physical distancing.

    - Straws should be individually wrapped.

    - Decoration of drink glasses (e.g. cocktail umbrellas) should be minimised.

    - Details of one person from each group must be retained by the pub for one month.

    - Carvery lunches are allowed but must operate a one-way system.

Its quite strange that theres no mention of the elephant in the room which is the amount of drink a table can order during there meal. Your going to get people wanting to get pissed and once that happens your pretty much guaranteed all rules out the window.

    Shin

I want masks worn in a confined space as well. I realize that restaurants and pubs are different with people eating and drinking. But you wear a mask when you have to. The only time it comes off is when you're feeding yourself.

My advice is if your that concerned don't go into a confined space. Much like the people who jump out your way or run away in the supermarket for coming towards them.
