After so many weeks/months I visited my parents in the house. I’m 32, I live alone, I used to spend a lot of time in there place pre covid. It was my birthday this week, I had to celebrate alone.

Tonight was emotional, my brothers, nieces and nephews were there. I hugged the kids like never before.

This week was beyond challenging for me, living alone is starting to take its toll. People forget the emotional and psychological impacts people by themselves are under during lockdown. It’s nice to see things get back to normal.

    Some good news

Schools will ditch social distance rules to reopen as Minister says 'only option' is for full return

The Government is planning for the return of all pupils to schools, in a considered gamble that fully reopening education facilities is not a threat to public health.

But teacher union leaders warn they will not tolerate a return to school in August or September that flouts whatever social distancing rules are in place at the time.

    https://www.independent.ie/world-news/coronavirus/schools-will-ditch-social-distance-rules-to-reopen-as-minister-says-only-option-is-for-full-return-39282678.html

What I do wonder is on the last paragraph - are all teachers unionised? If not - there are plenty of young teachers out of work, surely they d be eager to take up the opportunity? And those teachers who worry can cocoon until a vaccine is found. - expecting children, under 18, to do social distancing when half of them barely wash their hands once a day, is cuckoo land. Teachers policing them to do that instead of teaching just defeats the purpose.

They should be put on 203 euro a week. They can cocoon then for as long as they want

    Back on topic.

It is time to open up restaurants on the 22nd. All pubs can open on the 29th. People take personal responsibility.

Said this on the schools thread, but I think the Department is making a very calculated move to pit the public/parents against NEPHIT, and I hope NEPHIT don't bow to the pressure. If they do feel it's safe to recommend no social distancing by September then great, but if they don't they must say so.

For me, if the Department sticks with a like it or lump it policy, full re-opening regardless of the public health advice, then I won't be sending my kids back.

People keep citing other countries sending schools back as normal, but I don't think any are returning as "normal", and those that are close to it are countries where school numbers are massively lower than Irish.

Strictly speaking (according to government guidelines) are we allowed to have people from other households stay the night yet? My teenage daughter lives with my ex wife but usually stays with me at weekends. She hasn't stayed now for months.

The fear is going to be something that will take time for some people though because it’s been pumped into them practically 24/7 for a long time with hope and good news shot down as been dangerous in many quarters with people going out of their way to disprove anything that’s positive.

Last Sunday I brought the kids down to hook head for a few hours (strictly wasn’t allowed to do that until Monday I know for the permanently outraged on here) but headed off anyway.

The kids were loving it out climbing the rocks, exploring the rock pools, fresh sea air, a real tonic. As we were heading back to our car there was a family parking up and the dad was pleading with his kid to get out and explore but the kid was having a fit, “the virus daddy, the virus is there, it’s on the rocks, we have to stay at home there’s people here, there’s people here, the radio said we will catch the virus”

No way was the kid getting out, terrified and she was older than our two, I gave him a sympathetic nod as I went to get in my car and he gasped and said, we couldn’t keep that child in before all this and can’t get her out now.

It is going to take time to wind back in the fear for a lot of people.

There's little interest out there in wearing masks

Pubs will be jammers as soon as they open

If it were me I would have ignored that rule from day 1

Great hopefully they won’t back off it under some sorta pressure

Reality is over 20 European countries have re opened their schools already.

My problem is we are not one of them.

Do you have kids? Mine are on their summer holidays already. What's the point of opening a school now?

Soon (29th of June) all restrictions will be lifted and social distancing will be reduced to 1 metre.

    Social distancing is a restriction.

No I’m surprised there’s not more wearing them after all the hysteria. Seems like people are taking their own calculated risks from here on in

People want to socialize after all the restrictions

Masks are a barrier to that

    That’s really unfair;
I am currently in receipt of illness benefit as my sick leave with my employment is now up.
I have a medical condition which requires me to cocoon.
Trust me; anyone that has to cocoon does not want to be in this position!
I am in my 30’s with young children, and still have a mortgage and bills to pay and now through no fault of my own I cannot return to the job I love and because of that I am down a substantial amount of money each month until God knows when as are the hundreds of people who have lost their jobs because of this virus...would you tell them they should be happy claiming the social?
I am not a teacher by the way.

Exactly what I’ve been saying. If you refuse to do the job as prescribed then full pay ends immediately. Utter childish nonsense once again from whinging teacher unions

That’s fair enough but are you able to work from home?
If not I don’t see how you can expect full salary over and above what ever illness benefit there is available. It’s a tough world out there as you no doubt realise

Unfortunately no option of working from home as I am a front line worker& there is nothing that can be put in place for me by my employer to allow me to return to work safely (which I completely understand)
I don’t expect a full salary I’m just expressing that it is upsetting I worked so hard and sacrificed so much in my career to get where I was and now not knowing when/ if I’ll be able to return as well as now having to deal with the financial fallout from not being able to work and then to read comments like the one from the poster above say we can all cocoon as long as we want when the point is we don’t want to have to cocoon
As you say though it is a tough world right now and I appreciate that there are so many people in a lot worse positions sadly.

As far as I know, there was no restriction on this from the very beginning. She could have stayed with you.

Child access was not to be impeded by covid, she could have stayed with you all along, there weren't any excuses about having vulnerable people in the household etc being accepted from what I can see, access was to stay as precovid

Not a teacher but if your job is ignoring recommendations to implement social distancing that the rest of the country has to follow how is that right?

They would have to provide free masks to each household and they don’t have the capability to do this

The reality is that for the sake of society and the economy we need schools, crèches and public transport at the highest possible capacity.

    How about innovation?

Two days a week the GAA, rugby, athletics and football clubs get involved and the kids do sports. We will have the fittest healthiest children in Europe.

A mad idea but we may need a few mad ideas.
