I find it hard to believe they're only overtaking us now - do we report in the same way? They're probably not comparable.

There are certainly discrepancies in the worldometers figures, and I guess that they only take what figures are produced by each country's governments or health agencies. But it's not a total surprise. Countries who score badly in the "Deaths per million" statistic tend to be the smaller ones. Worst case in the world is Sam Marino, and it has been for months. Their deaths per million rate is 1,238. Next highest is Belgium at 832. But SM's total death count is only 42!!!

Other countries (sic) with very high deaths per million scores are Andorra (680) and St Maarten (360) both wore than us but they have tiny populations. If you only consider countries with populations greater than 0.5million then the top 10 league of high death rate countries as of today is Belgium, UK, Spain, Italy, Sweden France, Netherlands, USA, Ireland and Switzerland.

Sweden has been moving steadily up the charts. A few weeks ago it was level pegging with IReland, then it overtook us and Netherlands and is now worse than France. USA has been deteriorating too.

Why should a bigger country be ashamed of the same level of deaths just because they are a bigger country?

These charts from John Hopkins University are useful to get a feel for where the pandemic is growing most rapidly.

The slope of the graph indicates the speed of increase and if the graph becomes 'S' shaped (like Italy or France) they have the situation under control.

A worrying number of highly populated countries are still on a steep upwards trajectory.

Yes, I believe so in both cases.
I did glance - quickly enough - at the paper published in the Lancet regarding social distancing and masks. It was drawn I believe from multiple studies so it relied heavily say on papers on SARS. Conclusion though definitely looked to favour masks. Less clear on the distance needed in social distancing beyond the 1m.

Given that this virus is SARS CoV 2, and that the earliest cases in China were reported as being similar to SARS CoV 1, which broke out in 2002, why was there still uncertainty in the WHO as to whether this virus was transmittable from human to human?

The Coronovirus has not originated naturally but was probably developed by Chinese and American scientists, according to a Norwegian vaccine scientist.

Vaccine scientist Birger Sørensen shows in a study that the so-called spike protein of the virus contains sequences that appear to have been inserted artificially, reports NRK.

Sørensen has collaborated with British professor Angus Dalgliesh, and the recent study is published in the journal Quarterly Review of Biophysics.

“When we technically describe the virus, we see that it has not come about as a natural development. It’s done by the Americans and Chinese as part of what’s called “gain of function” studies. It is being done all over the world. You say you don’t, but it happens all the time in advanced labs,” said Sørensen.

The study points out that the Coronavirus has almost not mutated since it started transmitting between humans, which may indicate that the virus was already adapted to humans. Sørensen emphasizes that it is uncommon for viruses when they cross the species barriers

Are there any Irish scientists with similar views?

Only if it is a conspiracy other than in the minds of a tiny minority. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but am open to the possibility that this was man made, as there have been various opinions expressed about the potential, albeit no proof. Controversial theory perhaps rather than conspiracy theory? A conspiracy theory would be more that it was man made to spread around and kill us all. Perhaps it's just an accident, but man made. Possibly.

People were infectious only after showing symptoms so it was easier to contain, I believe it was a little heavier-hitting that covid-19 too, so harder to spread if people were stuck in bed or at home as opposed to moving around with mild or no symptoms.

Do people still watch these? I haven't seen one in months now. There must be some kind of ghoulish fascination with then.

Ah ok, unlikely to be as lucky this time around then? I had hopes that it just fizzled out but if that's the reason why, how are we to fair out going forward

The virus did not arrive with a name tag, and was only named sars cov2 after detailed study

My point is that only someone who would generally believe in a lot of these conspiracy theory claims floating around would believe that Sars COv 2 was man made.
I mean it's more possible that the current Coronavirus has been around for years now and the spikes which cause it to be so deadly have come about as part of a mutation of the Virus.

I was right. Now that they re-opened there's a new wave of infections. US is getting rekt at the moment.
This is not even accounting for the second wave in the fall.
This is not a recession but a depression. Look at Hertz.

Were we due a resurgence today, I hadn't heard anything?

Hopefully it's not just delayed by a few hours or so
