I see another thread about shops not taking cash etc and it strikes me as a massive mistake as a society to Let it happen. It is an integral part of maintaining (even at this stage nearly a fiction) of privacy and it's elimination from society will not be a positive development.

Interested to hear other people's opinions..

Privacy for what? To dodge paying tax?
Removing it will be one of the best things to happen.

You can't think why privacy can be important in any situation, especially with a world which may change from what it is today?

And if the systems ever go down....we're all banjaxed? If large institutions start disagreeing with financial decisions and cut off access to credit?

Only to pay a debt, such as if you ate at a restaurant and pay after the food is consumed. For most things you buy, you pay before you receive it so there’s no debt. In that case they can insist on whatever payment method they like.

The black market ALWAYS finds a way, that's its nature. Legalise drugs if you want to actually help human beings avoid spiked drugs and dangerous situations. Tearing away at their privacy in pursuit of criminals never actually leads leads to significant reduction in crime and you can make the arguement it's never been for that purpose.

Are you suggesting that the system could never fail like a first world bank could ... lets say not recognise payments in or make payments out for three weeks? That could never happen? What if you didnt have a second bank account? What would you do for rent, food and heating for three weeks? Lets not get started on the mortgage? What if you could nt fall back on gold or silver as a currency or if the computer systems failed?

Didnt that happen about 8 years ago at Ulster bank? They out sourced their IT saving €8 million and the chairman got a bonus of 1 million extra. The technican screwed up and they had no transactions for a few weeks?

The removal of cash from society is classicist and problematic to say the least, that effects the lower classes almost exclusively. People from under-funded, in-educated areas often don’t have bank accounts. What are they supposed to do? Starve because some uppity shop owner is to good for cash?

My bank recently started charging more fees in the heat of the COVID-19 crisis when everywhere was asking to use contactless payments. Banks are willing to do this kind of thing at the expense of people's health - they should've removed charges for card usage not added more. The last thing you want is a system that makes citizens further dependent on these hungry bastards.

With the decline in the virus I've returned to cash after what, 12 weeks now?

Tap and go is the preserve of the moron. Takes twice, three times as long to complete payment, not to mention half of vendors keep the reader upside down behind the counter, meaning the amount on the screen is out of your view, meaning your 1.50 can of coke could be 15 quid for all you know. An utter pain in the hole, I'm baffled as to how anybody prefers it over cash.

Removal of cash will not mean removal of privacy, necessarily. As bitcoin and other blockchain currencies stabilise, their adoption will grow, and privacy will remain possible.

If only there was something that the shop could give you to prove what you were charged and paid.

What, wait another 20 seconds for a receipt? For a can of coke?

Why the **** would I do that when I can count the coins and pay it myself?

Drug dealers will just use Sterling/ Dollars, gold sovereigns whatever, if you legalise drugs the criminals will find another cash flow, tiger kidnapping, kiddie porn, guns, scrum always finds its level

I became a lot more aware of what I was spending using card vs cash when going to apply for a mortgage. Having a stranger being able to pore through every detail of my life from what I had to breakfast to my subscription to pornhub premium made me a little uneasy.

So don't legalise and regulate drugs because criminals will get bored and start selling child porn? That's not how humans, crime or drug trade works. Incredible.
