A question for you lads, I'd be interested to hear your opinions. Ignoring prices etc, what do you think the cost of change would be to come from a 141 535d with 80k miles to a 182 440i with 3k miles?

I’m gonna say 25k But I reckon if you go in prepared to do a deal on the day you’ll do better maybe 23/24k.
They have some margin in that 440i but the hard one is what they can get for yours In the trade as they are unlikely to retail it themselves.
Your car is in perfect nick so will sell. Bolands have a lot of dealerships so might take it and sell it out of one of their other outlets too.

I don’t like the alloys and black kidney grills they seem to put on all BMW’s they sell. I really think they make the car look a bit cheaper.

Go through the pain of selling it privately as you know someone will pay for what it is and you won’t get much more than a 520d on a trade in. Then you are a straight cash buyer on the 440i.

    Agreed.
Makes me suspicious but probably just lazy as they know it will sell.
They seem to turn over nice high end stuff but I know nothing about them or their reputation.

I doubt they'd retail the 535 so they'd not really fancy it.

Spot on. Took the 440i out for a spin yesterday and it was quiet obvious they didn't want my car.

Selling privately could take weeks or months.

    Sorry
I thought your car would be more desirable to them. What would it fetch privately Do you think?
What did you think of the 440i and how bolands were to deal with?
I found them poor whenever I priced with them.

I was thinking a similar cost to change as yourself, maybe 25k. They started at 36k to change initially!

The car itself is a peach. That colour in the metal is stunning. I like subtle colours that don't stand out and attract too much attention so I was thinking I'd hate it. But its lovely. The spec is a bit disappointing. All it has is the merino leather, which is class, adaptive dampers and the adaptive led lights. It doesnt have anything else, no reverse camera, no extended blue tooth or even folding mirrors.

The main attraction of the car though is the engine of course and it's fabulous. Sounds great from outside and just goes to 7000 rpm with an unreal noise from it. It lacks a bit of torque alright and the 535d feels a lot faster because of it. Handling wise it's a bit sharper than the f10 of course, but it's still a big heavy car compared to say a hot hatch.

It's a cash buy though. Going in with a trade in is just not worth the hassle.

I think if that 440 had oyster leather, sunroof and a few other nice bits it would be far more attractive. Absolute peach of an engine though.

What have they got the 440i advertised at?

    45k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,833 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I assumed it would have folding mirrors, reverse camera etc. as it’s a high end performance machine. I agree if it had more spec it would already be sold.

Did they take your car away and put it on ramp for inspection? When I visited there for myself and then with my father when he was car shopping that’s what they did to evaluate it. I’ve never seen it before or since. My father was offended that they thought the car was not as he said and when they started picking out the fact his tyres would need changing before they would sell it and minor imperfections on his beloved Mercedes when they brought it back, they would want to have been giving him a BMW for free for him to do business with them. He is allergic to car sales people anyway but that took the biscuit.

Don’t surprised if they ring you with a better offer in a few days either.
Best thing might be put it up for sale privately and see what happens.

My own is up for sale now and yes, they got back with a better offer. I'll hold out though. They brought it in to check it alright but it's immaculate and needs nothing I wasnt worried and I expected that. Quinns did the same when I dealt with them.

I didn't like the place at all and the sense of arrogance from the guy I was dealing with was very off putting. Their reviews, compared to say Quinns or Morrisons, are shocking.

To the trade the 535 might get them 17k..... Moved on by that buyer for 25k but they'll have to stand over it.
That's where my 30k guess at cost to change came from.

    Frightening numbers really..

So they started at 9k for your car against full asking.
Id have been gone at that point to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,445 ✭✭✭Wailin

Yep, I actually left shaking with anger. The manager rang today apologising and a much more reasonable offer on the table but it's a hard pill to swallow. Beautiful car, only one of two for sale in the country and i wish it were in any other dealers except bolands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,833 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Was 30k the best final offer or have they done better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,445 ✭✭✭Wailin

Down to 27k now. Doubt I'll get better than that from them. But I'll hold off anyway.

What kind of way is that to start dealing with potential sales, I'm annoyed even read that ffs.

It's a lot to come up 4 years to a car a class below that has quite scabby spec. Have you had the 535 long?

Indeed..... Totally taking the p1ss...... Some folk must bite though or else they'd not go with such tactics.
That much move in price is woeful IMO.
    36k to 27k .... Madness.

I was going to take a trip down to view that 440i at some stage but after reading what they were asking from Wailin with his 535d for it I'm not going to waste an hour's drive. The figures they quoted are just comical and show that these type of dealers have their heads so far up their own arses. To go from 36k to 27k just says to me that they plucked them from the sky. Even 27k is too much, it's easy to see why that car has been sitting on their forecourt since last year and it will still be there next year too me thinks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,445 ✭✭✭Wailin

That's exactly what I said to him before I got up and left bazz, I can see why the car has been sitting there for the last year with that attitude.

Coming up to 3 years now. The 440i is practically brand new though with only 3000 miles and did cost €82k new.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,620 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It may only be good value though if they actually sell it, at a fraction of what it cost new. Judging by the figures they are bantering around they won't be selling it any time soon.

They'd have bought it off BMW Ireland? They might need the guts of 45k to make it worthwhile perhaps.
It was 2019 when they bought it?

BMW dealers sound like the biggest bunch of w&nkers. On the opposite end of the scale we went in to book a service on the Mrs car today. It's a 181 Ibiza FR she bought new but had the 60k PCP mileage limit exceeded so we enquired about a deal. Ended up putting a deposit down on a 202 Ateca FR 1.5TSi. It's on 0% finance and we got 75% back on what we paid for the Ibiza 2.5 years ago. It's making the new car very affordable

Sounds fabulous....... Presumably the deposit is tiny with them valuing the Ibiza decently?

It depends what you define as tiny I guess, it's 3k but the monthlies are what I consider very small for a brand new 35k car. Put it this way I'm paying more for my 5 year old Golf R.
