Sounds optimistic no? Where are you getting that figure from?

Have to agree. There's no way he's getting an extra 100bhp from that engine from just an ECU map. It's 185bhp stock so I'd imagine an extra 50 hp at best.

Plenty of examples, see here (multiple cars), here, and here to name a few

The G20 330e fares even better, models with the 330i engine are good for over 400BHP

Personally I installed a high flow cat and am running stage 2, as thats all you need to do (330e already comes with a good inter-cooler). For those thinking will that fail the NCT? No, because PHEV's are exempt from exhaust testing, see here: 2. Hybrid vehicles should be viewed as an electric vehicle and will not require an exhaust emissions test

I do plan on dyno-ing my own in the next few weeks though, just to be sure ;)

Ah fair enough, so you've made a few mods so it's not just an ECU map.

Yes, but only the cat. A stage 1 for this car is just a remap on its own, and that should still have you in the 350HP range. I'm just an enthusiast and want to go a little further :D

The reason you can get a +100HP increase is that the B48 engine that's in it was always built to handle a lot more than that in a any configuration. Closed-deck block, big injectors, twin-scroll turbo and all the usual modern engine tech. The stats alone suggest it's not a 184 HP engine as it is in a 330e, it's a at least a 250-300HP engine. So sure enough if you remove the boost and throttle limit set in the ECU, you can get an extra 100HP from it.

Why did BMW do this? Market segmentation really. Didn't want a possible 340e keeping up with their 6 cylinder 340i.

Same applies to the 545e I'd bet, the 6 cylinder makes 284HP in the 545e when it makes about 350 in every other model and is well known to remap to 400 and beyond. But we can't have it beating the M550i now can we? :P

No worries, I didn't believe the numbers myself when I fist saw them :pac:

Knowing this was why I was excited for a possible 545e touring. A remap on that to 500-550HP with xDrive would make it a beast but also still cheap to run and very practical too. Sadly BMW seem to have dashed my hopes on that one. Guess I'll have to settle for a 530e touring in a few years with a remap to a "paltry" 400HP :o

How much does it inprove acceleration times by with these remaps?

Plenty around for sale for reasonable prices ;):pac:

You can expect a sub 5 second 0-100 time with a good launch and good tryes. The M sport model has wider rear tyres vs the SE or Luxury models (225 vs 255), I'd say those models would really struggle for traction off the line.

    Example video here.
Bit of wheelspin off the line but you get the idea. Note: This isn't my car, but it has been remapped in a similar way :p

It's 100-200 km/h where the difference is huge, with the car now making 600+Nm of torque, it surges along. The gearbox was also over-rated for this car with a limit of 750Nm (similar box to the 330d), so no worries there.

my interest in a 330e has just gone up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,483 ✭✭✭MarkN

    I get about 600km
A Tesla or other EV can't do this (yet)

I was surprised to realise the Model S long range can do 600kms+ on one charge.

Seanaciousd, where in Ireland can you get this remap done?
Does it cost much and what way if any does it affect economy?

You are making the 530/330e more attractive with this news.

Very hefty price tag alright for a 3yr old 530d. They do love to bump up the price with good spec when selling but dismiss your spec when trading.

    Gorgeous interior on that car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,621 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Yeah, the sales guys in the video bangs on about the spec and the fact it's a 530D but you can be sure they told the previous owner it's only worth a little bit more than a 520d when they were trading it.

FWIW Conlans in Limerick who aren't know for being for cheap either, have a 2018 530D XDrive for a few grand less than that one.

    That 530d is what, 12/15 k overpriced?

But apart from that, the 30e cars look very appealing now even more. Lots of potential.

Pass me the sick bucket! I suppose it was too much to expect BMW to do two cars in a row that were good looking!

Far cry from the good old days of BMW, where the whole range looked sporty but elegant at the same time.

I don’t think it’s too bad, will wait to see proper pics tomorrow and then in person before making to much judgement on it

Are you for real? It's horrendous, a monstrosity. Take off the fanboy hat and be honest. The new 1 series isn't much better

    No way that is legit.
    Someone is having fun.
I have see the prototype pics but that is just a joke photoshop surely

I am for real, I’m not a huge fan of it but don’t hate it yet either and it could grow on me. I hated the big grill on the updated 7 when I see it in the pics first but when I’ve seen one in real life I didn’t think it was anywhere as near as bad as it was in the pics.

1 series is another good example of a car that looks much much better in real life than it does in photos.

I wish it was, here is the teaser photo revealed earlier:

Side and rear profile look good, a bit of mini 8 series about it.
I think it will look better in the metal, and the grille will be no barrier to sales.
At least BMW are not going down the photocopier route of making every model range identical in appearance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,402 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

It would be great if this was a wind up by BM, great publicity stunt. Leave some material around knowing they will leak. And then the reveal is an actual surprise for once, as all cars now get leaked with spy shots or promo material online before hand.

If that is the new face, I imagine give it a year or two and it will be what everyone wants.

I’d say you could be right in that designs that are considered hideous at the start become desirable over time. Whether it is from repeated exposure or the fact that the designers are right all along I don’t know.
It will be interesting to see what the gran coupe version looks like.

Agreed, I like it. The grill i'm not sold on but the side profile is great.

One thing though, that documentation in your link looks p1ss poor, from the red graphics, the fronts and BMW badge, it wouldn't surprise me if it's not legit. Very un-BMW like. Maybe it's their new direction.

It's the marketing hype and the aura of the cars - basically, through their "rich person's car" aura, they seed the idea that a face not even a mother can love, becomes the symbol of having "made it" and so desirable.

The new 4-Series is absolutely horrendous - not only it's got hideous badger teeth, it also looks like they were undecided if they wanted a trapezoidal grille like Audi/Mercedes, or keep the "kidney", and ended up putting the two one inside the other.

They'll sell a ton of these.

The oversize grille on the current 7 series is a far better proportion than this and even that is nowhere even close to working.
I like a deep grille like Audi but yes, they have gone nuts with this one.
