That is quiet excessive to be honest. The downside is (correct me if I'm wrong) if you don't continue the extended warranty then that's it, you can't decide to get one down the line when the car is older and more prone to issues. I think they are a reliable car when looked after and you'll probably end up trading it in a year or two? In that case I wouldn't bother, if it was me, with the extended warranty. Is the annual mileage high?

I thought they take any random car on warranty once under 100k km or something like that.

Yeah you can add it on again but they’ll load you for the first year from memory.

Below are my quotes from January for a 2016 330e with 86,000 miles six months out of manufacturer's warranty with a €335 excess.

    Comprehensive €832
    Named Component €703
    Driveline €511

Decided not to proceed and to take my chances.

    Just checked mine again.
comprehensive with zero excess is 1586 euro and with 335 excess it's 989 euro.
I think I will take my chances.
I reckon they have upped the prices and will cancel BMW first too which is upping prices and reducing benefits.

I guess they want to make their own 2 year AUC warranty stand out versus what you can get if importing yourself or buying private.
If they discontinue the warranty purchasing option or make it too expensive, a few will return to purchase from main dealer.
Its a short sighted move though imo as a big percentage will look elsewhere

    ....

On a 3 year old 520d with not loony mileage?

    63000km on the clock.
    It’s a crazy price alright.

Prohibitively expensive on a fresh car really. Thank you for the detail.

If such a car is on average eating up 1500 to 1600 quid per year in warranty work, its abit scary.

You could well spend that and a lot more on a repair if you were unlucky enough. I've a 15 reg 530d with a blown Harmon Kardon loud speaker amp that BMW want €1500 + vat for a replacement. I've someone searching for a second hand one for around a third of that price, but that's the first problem I've had with the car in nearly 2.5 years of ownership. Comes with the territory of these type of cars, they can be trouble free but then a big bill can come along out of the blue.

I've never seen these quotes before. They do seem like a lot and I'm not sure how I would approach it to be honest. I suppose when it comes to selling you have all the BMW receipts and know everything has been done as it should have been but would that car command a premium over one that hadn't or had the warranty and didn't give any problems?

Couple of months ago I got a quote of €850 Comprehensive for a 2014 430D which had done 105,000 km. Did they double pricing in recent weeks?

The warranty is expensive imo. I know you can get unlucky (like Bazz) and BMW bills can be big, but you'd need a €1500 warranty claim to "break even". You can be sure the odds are stacked in BMW's favour.

I didn't bother with it when mine expired in February. Actually, they never even bothered to contact me to try selling it to me. Do they contact you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,833 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I got contacted in March as my two year approved used warranty ran out. The figures were much lower but I can’t recall exact numbers because I queried the fact that the car wasn’t three years old so still under manufacturers warranty. They copped this and said ignore as yes car was still under warranty until end of June.
Now the same letter arrived inviting me to take out extended warranty but as said earlier the prices are well up.
I think I will ring them to clarify if prices are correct.
Definitely not doing it at the numbers so far.

Definitely agree with you there. I'd rather put the money away for a potential bill than paying it up front for a bill that might not come before it expires.

Same colour, snapper rocks blue as the (in)famous 440i we have been watching.
Looks good in the sunlight, needs the black grille though for full effect. First thing I would do in the 440i.
    L reg devalues it!

The black grill makes a huge difference to them alright. That 430d is an original Irish car too. Shame the interior of that or the 440i are not partially oyster though, would really brighten it up and make it feel more premium..

    You tempted by the 430d?
Move up a couple of years, new warranty and Forget about the HK amplifier.

Na, they would screw me on the trade in price as well as the broken HK amp. Your on the back foot straight away trying to trade a car with a problem. I don't think I would entertain that dealer anyway, they tried to low ball me previously with a trade-in price and I wouldn't give one individual in there the time of day ever again.

Also I'm working from home full time now so it's hard to justify a big diesel just sitting there on my driveway for most of the time not to mind replace it with another one. I'd love that 440i alright there would be a big gulf in what I'd be willing to pay for it with my own car versus what they would want.

I’ve bought the last few new cars from them and found them very good generally.
Had a bad experience the very first time I went there in 2010 But my neighbour swore by them and I priced a car again with them.
They were much better and got my business. The sales guy was clever enough to not give me a price day one when I told him what I was after.
He correctly copped I was pricing in lots of BMW dealers and said to me to go away and get prices and he would beat the best, which they did.
They’re good on aftersales too and there is none of the BS you get in the Dublin dealerships.

I heard they are good to deal with but Quinns in Athlone get my vote after dealing with the likes of Keanes and Bolands in Waterford. They encourage your business rather than drive you away.

Another pic of the M4. I like it.

The black grille really does make the front end a while lot more bearable

Yep i think because it appears more like a single black section
like audi. The chrome running down the middle on the other versions just makes it look completely wrong proportioned.

A question for you lads, I'd be interested to hear your opinions. Ignoring prices etc, what do you think the cost of change would be to come from a 141 535d with 80k miles to a 182 440i with 3k miles?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,089 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

They're gonna low ball you to hell on your own car. I think you're going the wrong way about dealing on the 440i. Your car should be fairly attractive on a private sale. And at this stage that 440i is a car they probably want gone.

Other end of the scale but last year 132 to 151 330d and the dealer originally wanted 14k - private sale and I was in it for under 5k in the end.

    30k :o
I doubt they'd retail the 535 so they'd not really fancy it.
