I've been outside all day today enjoying the amazing weather. People are out again and the roads are busy and people are enjoying themselves.

It's really positive to see people out.

457 deaths? 457 cases? 457 cases per day per week per month?

we arent even arguing and you seem to be losing the argument already with answers like that.

You support and listen to these experts. Surely you can come up with better than "457" ?

Or are these experts in fact extremely poor and have very little idea of what recommendations they are making but you dont want to admit this?

Given we were told to fear deaths of 100,000 if we didnt flatten the curve - the country has flattened this curve - 73 new cases in a population of over 5 million, while thousands in fact tens of thousands , are suffering other serious conditions - and not including the severe mental impact this is having on 100s of thousands including me.

Nobody said we should expect deaths of 100000.

We had 73 cases today, roughly the same amount as Paddy's day. We're getting there but we're not out of the woods yet.

I havent seen anything in the media as of yet about the Gardai out and about manning checkpoints this weekend, Are they not doing their usual Covid19 BH checkpoints?

They've a perfect handy little circle going. NPHET say they only advise, but set out exactly what they want to happen - "Not our problem, government can do what they want".
The government say they base everything on NPHET recommendations- "Not our problem, NPHET said to do XYZ".

Neither feel pressured into making any bold decision as they are covered by each other. Neither want the responsibility.

    I agree.

I picked a random figure because there's literally no figure I can arrive at that will satisfy you.

Do you have a number yourself?

Looking at the press conference I’m struck once again by the void in power in this country. Dr Tony should be to the left, Leo or another senior minister in the middle and another official - perhaps economic / social on the right to give us a proper view of what are the advantages / disadvantages of the current situation.
Leo has left Tony and a board of doctors to run the country, this will be shown in time to be a monumental disaster. It also displays a gutless and cowardly attitude to running Ireland, so disappointing. The government can avoid all the hard questions being asked on this thread and feed the public scare stories on a daily basis.

17 deaths and 73 new cases today. He couldn't lift restrictions today with those numbers.

There are far more than 73 people suffering under the current restrictions than the 73 that were confirmed to have covid in the last 24 hours.
There were also more than 17 deaths, people who died of other causes but their deaths are deemed to be irrelevant because they aren’t coronavirus.

Coronavirus isn’t the only thing or even the worst thing that can happen to a person here today.
Why are their needs being neglected, why are they being treated as second class citizens?

Funnily enough that maybe just how it’s been done at the moment.

Roll up, roll up, pick a number any number, everyone’s a winner.

I think daily case numbers in single figures is a good place to start.

Because their deaths are the only ones being treated as a national tragedy.
Their deaths are being used as justification to continue the insanely drawn out roadmap to easing of restrictions, while the others are never referenced or given any thought, or their families for that matter.

Why are the 73 with coronavirus more important than the 73+ who are suffering one way or another today under current restrictions?

Do you think thats realistic given that we have 4,900,000 people living in Ireland?

It’s almost as if Holohan isn’t allowed to float, propose, announce or change policy on the fly in a press conference. You would swear proposed policy changes had to be agreed at NPHET meetings, brought to government for acceptance or rejection, and only once approved at cabinet released to the public.

Honestly, what do people expect at daily press briefings

Well, yes, because other countries have done exactly that.

The cmo said this eve that 90% of infected people have recovered but we should wait until we have daily cases below 10!

    Ok then!

17 deaths reported. 7 as they said are from as far back as March.

We are going to the end of Phase 1 regardless. At that point we should have a new government. I don't know about this imagined void, the government agree with the advice. Part of that comes from having a doctor in charge there too. I also reckon these daily briefings have ceased to have any useful purpose any more as it's the same inane questions all the time and exactly the same response. There really will be no change in any message until this time next week.

For every death in the country to be referenced apparently.

Tony's cage rattled a bit today ? That meeting with cabinet mustn't have been pleasant regardless of what they say

Time to make a stand right now. Holohan is now officially acting like some sort of dictator.

What’s more: Holohan reminds us that non-essential journeys aren’t actually permitted right now, under law, and seems to suggest that might still be the case by July 1 when Ryanair scale back up their Irish routes

This is the final straw. People need to get outside and ignore this idiot.

I think it is time to roll back! All the people on the building sites should be back on the dole immediately! The distance of 5km should be reduced to 2km straight away ! The second wave of virus surge is amongst us now !

If we get a spike then they'll have to go back to listening to the "idiot". Seriously, some of posts on this are like the child's "Are we there yet?" or "Why aren't we there yet?"!

If we get a spike those people who are infected go to our empty hospitals and maybe utilise our 80% free ICU capacity.

Are you seriously thinking that a "spike" will be 50,000 ?

    This is absolute madness.

We have empty bloody hospitals, tons of ICU beds completely empty, and we are mulling over 73 new cases as if we are about go to extinct.

    Is this for real?

Honestly go outside and enjoy the fresh air.
