    Out of curiosity I got a new price quote from a BMW dealer on the M340i. Stock car price before VAT and VRT......€45,637 with metallic paint :rolleyes:

    VAT: €10,496.51

    VRT: €18,009.13 :pac::pac:

    Total after taxes before even looking at packs and options: €74,152

    What a great little country to be a motorist.

    Mid 80's by the time you add delivery and a few options.
    Crazy money here alright.
    I don't know why BMW took the price lists off their website and configurator. it is a pain. I suppose designed to make you contact a dealer.
    I can't see too many if any new m340i's being sold to private purchasers new. BMW Ireland might have one or two they sell into the dealer network later though.

    Delivery price €995, service pack €895 and starter pack €395. The last two not compulsory of course. Anyone know what starter pack is?

    The VRT is calculated on the VAT inclusive price right?

    Not sure, there's no break down on VRT calculation, but you bet the sneaky hoors are calculating it on the VAT inc.

    Very odd that. Motorcheck throwing up Audi A8 LWB 3.0tdi 250 Quattro too.

    starter pack is just a rip off charge. I always challenge it if added to a quote and it is removed. Basically a charge for them taking the plastic off, putting fuel in etc. getting it ready to drive away. Not every dealer charges it in my experience.

    I think the badge added later as I don't think Audi had switched to that stupid system back in 2011. It would still have been 3.0tdi back then.

    Ya the 30 40 50 etc is a very recent idea meant to help position models by power output now with hybrid powered models coming on stream.
    I dont like it at all but that badge stuck on that A8 is just daft.

    What do the numbers imply ? I first noticed it in Oz, thought it was just a thing over there with Audi but seen it here when I came home

    Why would you want to put a petrol badge on a diesel car. :confused:

    There isnt a direct bhp figure for each model number but its just to allow them to represent power outputs as opposed to engine sizes as engine sizes no longer give a true reflection of where something sits in the range.
    You could have a 1.5 petrol hybrid putting out 230 bhp so badging it as a 1.5 would be doing it a disservice.

    30 = 109-128 hp (81-96 kW) (107 and 127bhp)
    35 = 147-160 hp (110-120 kW) (145 and 159bhp)
    40 = 167-201 hp (125-150 kW) (165 and 198bhp)
    45 = 226-248 hp (169-185 kW) (223 and 244bhp)
    50 = 281-308 hp (210-230 kW) (278 and 304bhp)
    55 = 328-368 hp (245-275 kW)
    60 = 429-455 hp (320-340 kW) (423 and 449bhp)
    70 = 536+ hp (400+ kW) (529bhp +)

    The number "50" will represent cars with an output of between 281 to 308 hp
    Not quite a fit for that A8 and the TFSI is petrol designation of course.

    As said by others, just someone adding a little personal touch.

    Loads of diesel A4s out there masquerading as S4s for more extreme examples of wannanebism.

    The first time I saw 40TDi A4s out in the wild I though they were V8s or something.
    I also find, it might be my failing eyesight with advancing years but the A6 and A8 badges are hard to distinguish with the font style they use.

    Just had a look at the stock there... something nice for small enough money!!

    https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/mercedes-benz/s-class/fpa/202001286681538?journey=DealerStockList

    €9k in the asking prices, makes the Merc look very cheap, €500 extra to tax the Merc admittedly and I'm a huge AWD fan but still.

    The Audi is in a different league, I'd gladly sit in the back sipping fine whiskey while the Mrs does all the driving.

  • Posts: 17,925 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    To an extent it's in a different league........ I'm not sure that extent is €9k though at the age of them. I another 3 years they'll both be worth peanuts I reckon.
    But the A8 is ideal for what you describe, being chauffeured about :)

    I test drove the one in Morrisons as I was very very close to buying a saloon one m. Was an animal to drive, huge amount of power, You wouldn’t notice much difference compared to driving an M3/M4 on main roads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,832 ✭✭✭carsfan2

    The one in Morrissons has been for sale for about six months now, same colour as the one Mat reviews. About 85k I think.
    Gas that you can get 20% discounts in U.K. straight off. I can’t see them letting it go at similar discount here.
    Hopefully in a year or so they will be possible to import for more reasonable figures.

    Some value for money in those luxobarges! That Lexus is the pick of the bunch for me. Over €200k new!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,691 ✭✭✭Heres Johnny

    Would you have much more hassle potentially with a luxobarge than the class below? When time comes to move on from the 141 A6 I have I will be pushing 40 and just looking at those luxobarge pictures gets me thinking instead of a 181/182 replacement a6 or 5 series I could possibly get a 2016 luxobarge for similar money. I've been in either 5 series or a6 since I'm 27 and the new ones don't excite me so a little step up in class might be nice.

    Your figures in 'hp' are actually those in bhp (although one or two figures are not correct there either) :)! Take the 40 models, these have between 170 and 204 PS, or 168 and 201 bhp if the figures in kW really are between 125 and 150 respectively.

    That is a lovely i30n. Colour really suits it. two owners though? maybe was a dealer demo?

    All the talk of Audi A8's got me looking and they seem to be even worse for depreciation than BMW and Merc.

    Why would you buy a new 2.0tdi A6 s line for similar money when you could have this?
    https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/audi/a8/fpa/202003198596431?journey=Search

    Going back a few years I found this. I don't know which I like most, the house the Bentley or the A8?
    Beautiful interior colour in my view. If you got it 30k ish surely you would still have a 10k plus car in three years time. I lost more than 20k in eighteen months ownership of my BMW 330e by comparison.

    A lot of bang for buck but personally, no. I'd rather pay the extra 4 or 5k for the golf R or even come down to a 2017 R for similar money. It would need to come down to high 20's before I'd consider that to be honest. Cupra or GTi would be more upmarket inside. Great reviews an all, I think it's just badge snobbery on my part!

    Are you considering moving to a hot hatch bazz?
