The only way to be fully past coronavirus is zero new cases for 14 days

We are an island and have a much better oppurtunity of beating this, than most other countries

That sounds all well and good in theory but when we have people coming down from the north and able to travel cross county at their behest it undermines our efforts and is kind of ridiculous

Brazil is just such a big country and doesnt seem like there is any plan to control it at all, it will remain a hazard of infection to the rest of the world for a long time

In South America Chile begins imposing lock downs starting with Santiago as fears grow among neighbors over the out-of-control spread in nearby Brazil.

    https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1261676530096205825

Also Peru reported over 4,000 new cases today and 131 new deaths.
Wish them well, one of the most cohesive (sans Allende) and efficient countries in South America, generally surrounded by chaotic administrations.

I remember a bit of an uproar over the Zika virus during Rio Olympics and the lack of measures they had in place. Seems nothing has changed.

SARS-CoV-2 sits in a 'sweetspot' of replication rate, pre/asymptomatic transmission and mortality that make it very problematic.

This makes me very suspicious of its origin. Was it for those reasons this virus was being studied closely and either through malice or mistake it made its way out of the lab and into the public.

It is odd. I wonder what the chances of a zooonotic disease emerging that is so infectious and with such a long asymptomatic period of infectiousness (along with many asymptomatic spreaders) and kills just enough people that society cant really go on as normal. Must be one in billions chance

I don't think we can ever hope to beat it without a catch-all vaccine (which is unlikely anyway). That's not the plan.

Are you suggesting we close the borders when we hit 0 new cases for 14 days?

No one could have known these characteristics of the virus just from its structure. However I do think an accidental release from a lab is a plausible idea.

Not to get all conspiratorial about it but if it did escape from a lab my money would be on it being a situation where it was tested on animals, once the carcass was being disposed of an entrepreneurial minded individual decided to make some cash selling to a wet market.

Nepal reports it's first fatality from coronavirus :(
Nepal has reported its first coronavirus death late on Saturday, a 29-year-old woman who recently gave birth, as the total number of people infected in the country reached 281.

The victim, who was from Sindhupalchowk district, some 90 kilometres (about 55 miles) from the capital Kathmandu, was on her way to a hospital for treatment when she died, Agence France-Presse reports.

The main issue with the future of this is, unless other countries also control the virus, it's going to keep spreading. The American continent may be a no-go zone for a while to come.

We should immediately put this post into a filing cabinet for careful consideration later.

COVID now leading cause of death in Brazil since late April, killing at least 700-800 daily. Heart disease at number two kills approximately 300 per day in Brazil, cerebrovascular disease also 300 per day

You've mentioned two of the worst diseases in history. Don't forget the Justinian Plague and the Black Death for bonus points.
You find it offensive that I mention 2 epidemics/pandemics on a thread that is about a pandemic?

shyte talk, off course it will spread did you not listen, the point is the rate and the time line and so the word MITIGATE is used. the idea of flattening a curve was that the same people will die, old, compromised, obese, inflamed, asthmatic..etc etc etc but not as quick and it turns out NOT in the numbers they've said. the idea was to lock down and flatten the curve, the curve is flatter now and still yet there;s talk of we now need to wait for a cure / vaccine.. well ****ing news flash, we cannot... and with a disease that only shows symptoms on 50% of those that have it, why should we??

People have lost sight of this flatten the curve and be good citizens campaign, now the goalpost are broadened and it's , stay indoors or we will digress and **** your jobs!! this needs to stop world wide....people are now connecting the dots and doing the math and you dont need a tin foil hat to know when somethings not right...

Also when Jenner injected small pox into james phips, the established clinicians said it was barbaric and horrific... one year later the president of the USA said humanity owed him a dept that will never be repaid...just because something seems antagonistic, even a view, doesn't mean it;s stupid or without merit.. The WHO have great press, they're salesmen with nicer suits, end of story, the same as doctor fauci, what is the motivation behind the salesman??? money!!! prestige and rewards..

sorry I've been on the wine.

It was derided as barbaric for good reason. Would you have gambled your life to potentially end small pox for others? Even if you would, it wouldnt be fair to expect somebody to, so yes it was barbaic no matter what way it is looked at

as it was crazy to sale off the edge of the earth..Look du pont, standard oil and general motors said for years that lead was not a general threat to health, I dont think you;d despute that it is, it;s a ****ing neurotoxin that stays in your blood and bones..the guy that exposed these companies lost eveything, because these big companies had money...it;s the same here, small doctors being silenced by big mouths with flashy smiles and teflon suits...we cannot do enough, people need to get on with things, life has to go on..unless it suits others agenda, that we accept a NEW NORMAL???

I'm surprised given Bolsanaro's 'face the virus like a man' system being so foolproof.

Question unrelated to above: If someone had the virus and let it be known that they didn't want to be resuscitated or put on a ventilator can a relative countermand that?

    When do the gyms reopen?

Saw something today I would rather not experience again

A rather rotund late 40's/50's guy wearing white lycra shorts - to say the shorts left nothing to the imagination would be an understatement

    Looks like August

The last phase begins on August 10th

Pubs, bars, nightclubs and casinos will reopen where social distancing and cleaning can be complied with. Festivals and other cultural gatherings may be held but with restricted numbers. Large weddings will still be restricted due to risk, as will other large gatherings. Normal visiting will resume in hospitals.

A phased return to normal work will start around this time. Shopping centres will reopen as well as theatres and cinemas that can maintain social distancing. Close physical contact sports like rugby, boxing and wrestling will be permitted. Gyms can reopen where there is regular and effective cleaning.

At least with the pubs opening on 10th August, it's something to look forward to.

If forced to wear a mask, I will simply cut a hole around the mouth to make it easier to drink with. That way it will be a lot more enjoyable.

Genuine question, do you enjoy doing what you at? Spreading fear. Surely you realise how damaging that is. The most disturbing thing I read here is a poster saying they heard a parent saying to their child stay away from people they are dangerous. What are you going to do when this is in the background. Sad existence from what i read here.
