Agreed. Salesmen have told me that they value both the same come trade in time.

I'm sure they change their mind once they're selling it though!

from memory the only reason the year was halved was due to 2013 dealers didn't want "13" plates so opted for "131".

    so it's completely meaningless IMO.

No but I care about cars not reg plates, however many neighbours buy white goods with new reg plates every 2 years so some people do

well the point more was most people dont see an extra value in it so wont pay more, on that basis dealers cant really sell for more either.

im with you, i couldnt care less about a reg plate personally :)

Not many of these around especially in that spec. There is some good value in those E Classes. I knew there was an E300d but I presume the E350d is twin turbo 6 pot like the 535d?

No the E300d is a 2.0 four, the only six cylinder is the 350d so it’s equivalent to a 530d really

Don't think they ever got two turbos with the v6.

258hp bazz, as madness says, same as the 530d. Very nicely specced, I love the interior colour combo, even though I'm not that mad keen, personally, on the merc interior. Seems very good value alright, slightly highish mileage for 3 year old car maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,832 ✭✭✭carsfan2

That's a beautiful Merc and a great spec. I bet it will sell quickly even in the current climate. Beshoff's do get some lovely stock. Are you interested Bazz?

I think there is e400d available 340 odd bhp but probably not even on sale in Ireland.

I still see an E Class as bit of an old man's car. I'm in my 40s so not quite there yet. Not too many 6 cylinder versions of that model E Class about though, I haven't driven that model E Class but most of the comparison reviews still sway towards the 5 Series being a more engaging drive but for comfort it would be hard to beat that Merc.

To be honest I have a 3.0 litre diesel car sitting on my driveway that has been driven very little over the last 7 weeks which is a waste and if this is the new norm then I'll be rethinking my next car type. I still have a hankering for a hot hatch/quick petrol car before I hit retirement age. I still keep tabs on that 440i down in Waterford but it's way too expensive for me given in this country you would be married to it as soon as you drove it off the forecourt. I'll bide my time and see how the car market pans out once the dust settles on the new world.

    I drove e 220d a couple of times.
There’s nothing between it and a 520d really.
I’d say it’s marginally more comfortable ride and handling a little softer. While the interior is more flashy it’s not as good quality as BMW. Really it’s a personal preference one over the other.
For the money the car in beshoffs is a great buy for someone.

The 440i in Waterford is a good buy too. I read today the new golf gti is going to come in at 46k for the manual version. That 440i is a new car In all but reg plate really and a lot more car than a golf.
    Puts it into perspective.

Yeah, you would be hard pressed to find a similar proper 2017 530d with anywhere near that e350d's spec for 32k. Dealers tell you that you won't get much more for a 530d over a 520d on trade-in yet the gap in asking prices between them is still substantial. As for the 440i, it would need to drop by another 10k before I'd be interested. I could see dealers switching the lights off when you come back to try and trade it in. They would be telling you anyone wanting a 3.0 litre petrol BMW would prefer a full blown M4 and those looking for a non M car would be happy with the 420i.

I drove an e220 when this model came out.
I thought it was rough and lacking torque compared to a lower bhp cls 220 id driven previously.
Maybe it was just that car but wasnt very impressive.
Its shocking really that 6 cylinder is so rare in e class

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,621 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The CLS had the older 2.1 litre engine too but maybe the cabin insulation on the CLS was a notch up on the E Class? I wonder was that e350d a Mercedes Ireland press car? The ad says it's an original Irish car.

2018 UK 440i GC after vrt and exchange are going for around 45k. Bear in mind the mileage of that 440i, it's almost new, you can't really argue about it's value. Putting 20-25k with my own car and coming up 4 years to an almost new 440i is not a bad figure at all really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,621 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I'm sure, I guess what I really am trying to say is that it's 10k more than what I'd be happy to pay for it.

I think that 440i is actually alright value especially if you could nip a little more off the price which may be possible. With a two year warranty and a service pack for that, it is a lot of car for the money.

Trading it in after a couple of years may not be as hard as you think either as it will be a rare car with high spec and the likes of Colm Quinn BMW or Morrisons actually like the more specialist cars as there is a small but enthusiastic market.
That said, you will still lose 20/25k over three years but that is the same as a 520d would lose.
As I said before, when a new manual golf gti costs 46k, it puts it into context. I know which I would have.

A 2019 440i, no adaptive led lights or merino leather, plus more miles obviously. 7k more expensive.

It does make you wonder why that blue 440i has under 2k miles and 2 yrs old.

The blue one is ex BMW first car that they brought out on the hire a performance car scheme. There was m2 and x3m40i too I think.
They never properly publicised the programme and binned it then sold the cars to the dealers. I remember Colm Quinn had the m2 for sale.
Explains the spec and lack of miles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,621 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

That blue 440i was a BMW First fleet car along with a M2 Competition and X3 M40i. The BMW First fleet was a promotion they had running early last year where BMW First members could rent these cars out for 2 or 3 days at a time. I think the cost was something like €200 for the 2 days with a €1500 security block on your credit card that was released once you handed the car back in the same condition you got it. I inquired last year but at that stage they were winding down the promotion and taking no more bookings due to the cost of it versus the low take up. When I inquired the M2 was still booked out for the next 2 months and they were just fulfilling those bookings, the X3 M40i was going back to BMW Ireland and the 440i had already gone back to be sold on through the dealer network. The 440i had very low mileage on it back then as it wasn't hired out that much and it's been for sale with the Waterford dealer since late last year so hasn't been driven all that much either.

And for what it's worth I heard that they scrutinized the cars when they came back for any signs of damage, scratches, marks, etc and had them detailed again before the next person hired them out. I'd say the M2 Competition had some fairly spirited driving alright but I'd say the 440i had a fairly quiet life. I don't think it would put me off buying it.

I was looking at beshoffs stock last night on Carzone. They really do get some nice cars and at better asking prices than mail dealers.
I presume as a result they give lower trade in values?
Anybody dealt with them in the past on here? Any stories good or bad?
Would they source a car for you I wonder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,621 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I've never dealt with Beshoffs but I've always admired their stock. They are around along time, sell some high end stuff and their stock always seems to sell quickly enough. I'd certainly call into them if they had something I'd be interested in when changing cars.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the trade-in values either, the difference in cost to change price between them and a main dealer for the same type of car is really all that matters. Get a quote for expended warranty from www.bmw-warranty.ie if you want to make a direct comparison with the 2 year warranty from a BMW dealer.

I went to beshoffs a few years ago and took an E61 out for a test drive. Found Jeremy very easy to deal with and professional. He handed me the keys to the car and said take your time. He offered me the same trade in price on my car as the dealer whom I eventually bought from.

I didn't go with the E61 in beshoffs because the car was wine in colour. Better specced and priced than the one I did buy, but I couldn't stand the colour. He seems to have a good reputation from anything I've heard.

Bought my E66 from him in his last premises. When the stem seals went on the V8, they covered the repair here in Dundalk, wrote a cheque straight to the repair garage. Was a bit of to-ing and froing to get to that point, but you'd have the same with any garage and would have no qualms about going back. Was given a loaner too, so I was looked after on a comparatively small beans sale.

I believe they could source you a car no problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,794 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Never bought from Beshoffs but called in when at their old premises it looked shocking due to lack of space.
Cars all blocked in and not a single space to park when visiting.
New place is much more in keeping with their reputation and looks like a great setup

Yes. A colleague had a BMW (F33) imported by them almost exactly to the spec they were after. Nothing but good words and praise for how they were dealt with and the whole transaction end to end. No problems 1 year on.
