Everyone is entitled to their opinion, sir.

There were boxes of medical masks at the checkout in Lidl this morning. If the HSE needed them, I'm sure they could send someone to acquire them. Id' say the shortage is over.

    HSE won't use them.
Lidl specifies these are not of medical standard.
They might be ok as a face covering on public transport.
I would be quite sceptical though having seen mask "sweatshops" in Asia in less than optimal conditions producing masks and packing them with bare hands.... if I were to cover my mouth and nose with them.

I know these masks are not cheap now and it’s a sellers market especially all these fashion heads who are now producing them. And I see Lidl day they are selling them at cost price so fair play to them. But still €50 odd is a lot to pay for a 1 box product. Has anyone bought these Lidl masks??

I am using this tutorial to make my masks. Comfortable, fits well and room inside for a sheet of kitchen towel inside as an extra filter.

I have a box of disposable surgical masks that I bought at the end of February, before the worldwide shortages.

For the past two weeks I have been wearing them to the supermarket. I know that since they're not the valved type they won't protect me if someone coughs on me or in my vicinity but they might protect someone else if I begin to cough, so that's why I wear them.

I imagine if I go back to work I will certainly wear them on the Luas. Other than that, I don't see the point of wearing them outside, and you can't in all honesty expect people to wear them for hours at their work desk.

The valved ones should be avoided, IMO

They offer protection to the wearer but there's no filter on exhalation, which is a problem if you're asymptomatic - you're shooting your viral droplets in a concentrated blast each time you exhale.

Has anyone coughed on you in all that time? I've seen two people cough outside in 8 weeks.

If you can provide a list of fashion heads it might be useful for people.

Not sure if you read the IT article from Saturday 2nd May: Fashion fights on.

It was an appauling article, IT Referring to Edmund McNulty’s best-selling knitwear as Irish PPE was reckless wording. A facecovering made of wool(an extremly loosely wooven fabric) and only washable at 30 degree's.

Regarding the box of LIDL masks, if anyone who has bought them could post photo's of box and mask, would be great. Heard someone say that they are medical or surgical grade but LIDL promoting them as if they are not, legal reasons probably.

Maybe your in a low cough area, or not that observant?

I've experienced 4 sneeze's within 3 meters of me in the past 8 weeks.

After the third time I started carrying around a spray disenfectent. I now blast the area if someone has sneezed to help reduce viral load and prevent someone walking into that cloud. It's what I refer to as the buddy system.

No, just considerably less fearful than some. Very observant thanks just not much of a risk factor in my daily external activities.

Dunno too much bout the fashion scene but I’ve seen ads popping up on, and then looked at websites, selling individual masks for as much as €18. And have seen plenty of these influencers promoting different designers. There are lots of different Irish influencers and designers around.

My stats of 4 sneezes in 8 week's are just dealing with indoor shopping.

Your reply suggest's your of the opinion that your less fearful than me, and that's fine, I don't care for your opinion on that.

But the fearful don't approach potential virus's head on with a handheld held sprayer, they run the other way.

My mannerism's have little to do with fear and heaps to do with being brave enought to take action to protect the elderly and the vulnerable.

And these would be cotton washable masks. So maybe €18 is not too extortionate if average cost of a 1-wear disposable mask is but less than €1. €18 does sound daft tho!!

Just have a look on eBay, they are about 5 each there, homemade, wired, pockets for filter. 18 is way too much. Bought few of them from eBay, washing them frequently at 60 degrees and not a problem. Influencers can influence someone else :D

I thought washing them in the washing machine didn't guarantee removing any virus on them?

Nothing about Covid has been more confusing and full of mixed messages than masks

It does, 60 degrees is recommended temperature. If u wanna be extra careful, put the masks in boiling water and leave them there till the water cool down. That will be enough to destroy any other bacterias and whatever else.

No it's fine. Even soapy water will do, as soap dismantles the fatty layer outside of the virus particle and the virus falls apart.

Got some reusable cotton masks from Here health there, (no filter thing just basic cotton mask, Irish made too , 3.99 each). Just tried them on but I got an itch on my skin under the mask and just though what the proper way to actually itch your skin would be or do you just have to try your best to ignore it since touching the mask etc defeats the point? (Sounds like a stupid question but being genuine! Just wondering! :) )

Saw a few people wearing them on my walk, mostly elderly people

Definitely seen an increase in people wearing masks the past couple of days.

NPHET will recommend wearing them today according to President Leo.

If anything in my area it's an awful lot less. Might see 1 or 2 people in the shop and that's it.

I bought the lidl masks anyway, €43 for a pack of 50. It says on box that they are medical masks. I know they are selling them at cost price but seems expensive still. Not sure if u should get more than 1 outing from them, I suppose will make 1 last per day. I will sell to you for €12.50 each!!

Exacto thought they were. Just a legal loop hole. They look like they are a nice roomy size, alot of the onesize fits all I find a bit small for me face.

    Defo, cheers.

Can't believe Leo said the virus “is a fire in retreat. We must quench its every spark and stamp out every ember”.

He's wanna be careful he might singe his socks.

I'm glad to see less of them in the supermarket where I work. What I observe everyday is a lot of people unnecessarily touching their faces when fiddling around their masks, or taking them off for few moments and then putting them back on with the same unwashed hands that just touched about everything in the shop

I've seen very few since it all started but I do see clusters of them!

This is it in a nutshell.
Talk about encouraging people to touch their face!
RTE today said hands need to be washed before touching the mask when out and about.
How on Earth is that going to be possible?

So everybody who was not wearing a mask had excellent hygiene or did you focus in on mask wearers and scrutinize them more?

Seeing you identified risks, did you report your observations to anyone else like a supervisor?

Do you have a habit of watching customers hygiene practice or is this just since Pandemic started?

Does your store have COVID-19 safety notices?

Does your store offer any information regarding how to use face masks?

Did you watch many nose pickers or mouth touchers?

Can you see where I am going with this?
