Ex smokers are probably older on average

Now really, there would be a lot of ex smokers who are younger too, who turned from smoking to vaping because the smokes were too costly. My experience and observation.

They don't. The benefit of the mask is to protect others from the wearer . I really don't understand how people don't get this.

Surely it's easy to see why people 'don't get it'? If a mask prevents droplets from being expelled, surely it prevents them from being inhaled? I'm guessing that's why doctors and nurses wear them ... or is it to prevent them from infecting their patients?

I would imagine 90% plus of people wearing masks fully believe they are stopping themselves getting the virus and don’t understand that at best they are probably on giving themselves less than 50% reduced probability. Maybe is best we don’t pass that on the vociferously as self interest is always the better motivation

It is to prevent them infecting the patient. A fully sealed mask is the best for preventing the user becoming infected and is why these are being prioritised to hospitals

Dropped into Lidl earlier. It's been literally weeks since I've been inside the door of a supermarket or anywhere but work really... Jesus tonight. Compared to a couple of weeks ago (~4 weeks maybe) there is a frightening difference. It's the same as if this thing never existed. It was packed to the rafters and I'd say less than 10% observing any description of social distancing. We'll see an upswing in numbers (and additional control measures) way faster than anticipated if this is anything to go by. I'm aware one shop doesn't determine the populations behaviour but if people are getting this relaxed already.... I fear for whats to come more than what has passed :(

It's disappointing reading your post. We all have a responsibility going forward to stamp down on this virus. Went to the shop the other day and I saw someone with a trolley of beer cases. I didn't investigate the trolley but it did look like it was all beer. She couldn't have been buying all for herself. That would tell me there was some sort of a party or get together happening.

I know we got some good numbers today but we can't get too comfortable going forward. We need to be on guard and continue to do our bit. Especially if we want any normality to come back. It would be great if we could stamp down on this virus and eradicate the community transmissions throughout this summer and allow the children to go back to school come September. September and the new school year always sees a spike in colds going around so that could be a problem if this virus is still circulating.

I dare anyone to wear a surgical mask and resist the urge to adjust it with their hands at least once. Comfortable they are not.

Masks stop you touching your face. That's their main value.
Their main value is to stop you spluttering onto someone else and passing on the virus if you're infected.
"Their" main drawback is that people are idiots.

    So, opinions on this?

Cousin and her boyfriend, both around 19 and started meeting again. Both don't live together.

What's worse I heard tonight that they visited his Grandparents in their garden. Both Grandparents are in their mid 60s. Apparently it was ok because "they set in the front garden and kept social distancing"

They broke the restrictions twice here surely? Once by meeting each other and then going to meet his Grandparents in the garden

Agreed. What is one to do about it however.

As long as the mask is tight fitting yes I agree you are protected from mouth or nose not the eyes. Also the thing about touching the inside of the mask is if you are not sick but you touch a surface that could have you may infect yourself.

I am not against masks but you are not 100% safe when wearing a mask from what I say above to touching your face when taking off the mask. I would also say some people who do not wear a mask might be safer as they could be more alert to the dangers

There's a huge difference in the functionality of masks (i.e. potential viral exposure) between a healthcare worker in e.g. a Covid ward and a Tesco shopper.

If the grandparents catch it and die from it that's something they have to live with not you

No it is to help them not been infected. You will also see that doctor and nurse will wash there hands before using a mask or gloves and throw them away after every patient. Plus they are only around a person for a very short period of time

This has been dealt with weeks ago in the Kerry thread - they contracted the disease in Dublin before they were ever moved to Kerry, so blame the various hotel owners for trying to cram as many people as possible into one building, in order to maximise paycheques, and then the DoJ for compounding the problem.

No they don't. That's a silly claim to make. Smart people don't touch their face.

If they are farther then the 5KM apart then yes and if the grandparents were 5KM apart then yes providing they were not bringing the something. At least they stayed away from them. You could say all those who did the drive by birthdays for older people were breaking laws but luckily the law used there heads

That's an interesting question. Where do you draw the line?

I just don't understand why people won't follow the rules. We are starting to beat this as a country

The 5Km rule only covered exercise I thought.

From my understanding, I thought no other househould was to meet with another?

I actually think people are sensible, I think this beating this as a country is funny. What do you think is going to happen when we open up and people travel with no restrictions.
Btw the majority of the positive cases mentioned today were in Nursing homes, only 22 in the wider community. Your cousin's grandparents are lucky they are not in a nursing home.

Did you not know the r0 went from 4 to 0.5 all on its own

It actually went from 4 to 0.8 as a result of social distancing. It went from 0.8 to 0.5 as a result of the lockdown.

We are still letting people into the country with no restrictions! They even don't give details of where they are staying and many can't be contacted if they do. Worse there is no legal basis as of now to make them isolate.

Do people still think you catch this because somebody brushes by you in a supermarket?

I thought we couldn't meet other households till June 8th?

The crap that the WHO and the CMO for the last country in the world except England are peddling is that:

"There is some evidence to suggest that wearing a mask cause people to touch their face more often"

Some evidence means some "fellas think this".

Nobody ever said they stop you touching your face. Not even the anti maskers.

    ha

Makes you wonder if SD was so effective why is the country still locked down and going to take almost 3 months to open fully. Is there an unwillingness to admit a flawed policy do you think.
