    Nail polish can alter readings.
Cold fingers can have an impact too.
You could give it a wipe down on the inside in case there's any dust.

Think AMA thread had tips. make sure finger pushed in all way. no dirt on it or the oximeter was one. If that helps.

Keep your hand still, better if you have it flat on the table. Raising your arm or moving your fingers albeit minimally will alter the reading. Like the others suggested, the finger should be warm enough and dry, cold affects the peripheral blood circulation and alter the reading.

    This might help, too.

By the way, pressing the button more than once will change the way the figures are displayed (direction of the numbers and heart rate pattern).

Average of 2250 deaths per day from COVID in the European Union over the last 61 days.

On average 12,000-14,000 people die in a typical day in the EU

When I said here during the week let's wait until friday to hear the plan I was told there will be no plan, they haven't a clue etc etc.

I said just relax until we loose our minds.

    Glad you have seen sense.

It's not seeing sense, I always said there would be a plan and hopefully it would have dates, there was a constant drip feed during the week, that annoyed me..maybe it was to get public reaction and there definitely according to most respected journalists dates assigned to any of these stages earlier in the week.

Now lets move through the stages and have 90% normality in August

Forgive me for jumping straight into the thread with this (I normally read back a bit to catch up) but I'd be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this.

I was speaking to the commercial manager of the tourism site I work in this evening and her take on this was that we'd be open in May. We got a few thousand a day this time last year (an example of the numbers I am talking about). I gave her my take on it but correct me if I am wrong. Commerical manager was upset with me for pointing out these 3 things.

1 - 20km travel restrictions will only be lifted on June 8th
2 - For May, you can only deal with clients who are within 5km of your business as they cannot travel to you any further
3 - Stage 2 we can deal with hyper local customers and Stage 4 (20 July) is when domestic tourism can really restart

Received an email from the big chief 2 hours ago where she was tearing me a new h*le for being negative.....

addendum - apparently the CM jumped the shark and sent out emails to trade companies.

Addendum 2 - Lucky to still have a job in these strange times but this reminds me why I hate it.

Anyone fancy a pint on Monday 10th August, thinking of taking Tuesday off.

Booking the full week off, think I'll use it as a week down the country somewhere

Bar a serious resurgence in the virus, which is always possible, I think the pubs will open in late August as planned, with the proviso that there is some form of distancing and potentially table only service.

I've worked in the bar industry my entire adult life in a range of establishments, and in different countries. I agree we can't close forever but don't be under any illusion that owners won't cram them in the day it reopens. The only reason you are refused in a bar is if it risks causing other people who would spend more than you to leave.

I don't know why Leo pulling out the piece of paper was such a big deal. I'd imagine he's had a busy few days. He is only human like the rest of us.

At least he didn't BS his way out of it.

I did think this part of the plan was a bit funny:

"Open pubs, bars, nightclubs, casinos, where social distancing and strict cleaning can be complied with"

Pubs sure, but social distancing and keeping a nightclub clean all night? :p Just picturing everybody standing 2m apart from eachother haha

I'm definitely not an FG voter, but I appreciate the honesty of it. I am fed up to the back teeth of seeing, particularly in the UK, Tories spewing absolute nonsense with utter confidence about all sorts of technical issues be it Brexit or COVID-19.

These are technical details. You get them right. If that means reading paper, so be it.

Would you go into a meeting and waffle your way through on something highly because you were afraid to consult a piece of paper?

I'd far rather have "wait let me check that" than complete inaccurate gibberish presented in an arrogantly oxbridge accent.

He, and frankly most of Irish politics at a serious level, have been on the ball with facts, pragmatic, sensible and very measured. I don't think we need to be going down this pile on nonsense because someone read their notes.

They're politicians trying to deal with running a country in the middle of a massive crisis, not actors on some TV show reciting learnt off lines. Perhaps it was that confusion that landed the US with a reality TV spoofer as president?

One thing which I think is worth noting is that while these dates are very welcome and give us all something to aim towards, they are a best case scenario with numbers declining throughout. Phases 1, 2 and 3 are the lowest risk, but Phase 4 (opening of crèches and preschools, return of sport, higher risk businesses reopening) poses a jump in the risk levels and any small unexpected spikes by the 20th of July will surely delay it by at least 3 weeks or worse. I'm not trying to be a negative Nancy, I do see a lot of sense in the document's structure and the way they are approaching this. I'm just trying to highlight the point that there could well be setbacks along the way but that we are moving towards an overall better trajectory and we now know the what, how and potentially when we will get back to "normal"

Surely these cases should be considered clusters nd not community spread.

    Regarding the meat factory outbreaks

Surely are clusters but they then in turn contribute to community spread

Dawn Meats at least had the good sense to close after 4 reported cases.

How in the name of god those fools in Roscrea continued and actually still continue is beyond belief.

They stated that those infected are in self isolation in line with HSE guidelines.

The HSE would want to be making a clear statement to these essential workplaces that If you get 5/10/20 cases that you shut the f**king doors immediately for 21 days minimum to try and control the outbreak.

It’s no good isolating those that have it while it spreads like wildfire through the factory.

This is the problem with the whole lockdown and essential workplaces. Apart from hospitals and care facilities there has to be a point where operations must cease.

Employers will keep going indefinitely as it’s all about the numbers to them. Someone needs to protect the workers.

Nobody under the age of 30 dead yet, they're as likely to die by being pooed on by a crow.

Young people stuck at home watching re runs on redtube seems like a good use of their time!

That's patently untrue. I know that you're allowed to post personal opinions here, but please try and get at least the fundamentals correct.

To visit immediate family around 100km away - is that Phase 2 (visit households) or when would that be allowed?

Getting really upset every day at not being able to go home and don't think I'll last until August/September if that's the case.

Edit: Disregard, did more research and looks like I'm stuck until phase 5. Feeling pretty bad about that.

1200 dead in a two month period, half of these were people outside of old persons homes. So we have 600 people over 60 days outside of hospital.
How many of that rough figure of 10 per day had pre morbidities, I don't for one second buy the idea the "governments" intervention had any influence on the death rate. Just have a look at Sweden as well as the lack of spread amoung daily exposed workers in the economy.

How the hell did that cmo chap hold on to his job after the cervical scandal? He should be behind bars not giving advice on TV.

Nursing Homes in Ireland are under two categories
    1. Public
    2. Private

Both should operate within the same safeguarding guidelines.

However, one is more accessible to scrutiny whilst the other can, oft times, determine their own rules and regulations, simply because not all legislation applies to them, due to loopholes.

For Nursing Homes statistics, more meaningful for myself, would be providing details showing which category of Nursing Home has more prevalence of this virus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 909 ✭✭✭coastwatch

I think that's unfair, and lot of finger pointing with the benefit of hindsight.
The number of nursing home deaths here are similar to the rest of european countries overall, 50-60%, so every other country got it wrong too.

It is just as likely that the virus got into nursing homes through asymptomatic staff as through visitors, so stopping visitors was not going to prevent spread into the homes.

With the benefit of hindsight, the nursing home model is the problem, where there could be 50-100 of the most frail and vulnerable cared for, in single facilities.

A better model would be to have much smaller nursing home facilities, catering for 10-20 at most.

Very sad to hear how se Mary’s in phoenix park initially stopped visitors like the private ones.

Then the CMO saying that restrictions shouldn’t be brough into nursing homes yet. So the reversed it and allowed visitors for a further 7 days.

Can’t have helped. I know a lot of the virus was brought in by staff so may have been a disaster either way.

Doesn’t stop you from criticising that particular guideline and timing. Airports , Italian rugby fans were another joke.

Lowest number of cases yesterday since the 1st of April at 221.

    We are getting there.

The government policy is just set out and could be retracted or extended still too early to tell.

Lets keep doing what we are doing and hopefully we don't have to see them out till August.

We will hit under 100 new cases a day fairly soon, hopefully next week.

I know that everyone with symptoms are not getting tested but have to remain optimistic, gives me hope.

No, I live here and its ridiculous the carry on of people. Parks back open today where I am and had to turn back. Edit: I replied to the US Question.

Ireland is doing well at the minute in all fairness, only 221 cases yesterday.

Is it all true though. According to Worldometer, Greece has not done “massive testing” and I’m pretty sure they aren’t required to wear masks everywhere (there is no mention of that on the Greek health service website). The message is a good one, but people stop listening if you just start making things up to suit the narrative

One of mine is feeling particularly keen to come home and is struggling a bit with that restriction. But honestly the few months will pass in no time, and when you are looking back the far side of it, it will seem like it was really fast. Keep in touch with whatsapp and jokes and a bit if face time and keep occupied with bits and bobs. It will be a story to tell in years to come. It will be grand.
