Over 70s were allowed out anyway.

Ok so I’m in a whatsapp with approx 50 guys aged between 20-60 who I have played football with over the years.

Most had no interest in Leo’s speech - plenty of smart comments and quips

A lot of them are flouting the guidelines the last week or so and scoffing at them.

I find this sad as I am personally taking the restrictions as seriously as I can.

Is there a broken down timeline available? 3 weeks by 3 weeks?

We only have phase one confirmed
    Phase 2 3 weeks from 18th May

I wish that everybody, not just some in the country would remember that there are people, in their 20s , 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s vunerable, and cocooning at home . Many them alone.
    The government etc. in particular.

    No it's not

You can't drive to a location to exercise. That 5KM is your exercise area

That means no driving. You cannot go for a drive withing the 5km.

No you’re wrong I’m afraid. Of course you can drive to somewhere within the 5km and exercise there. I live within 2km of the local park and tones of people drive down there to go for a walk or swim in the sea. No idea where you got the notion that people couldn’t drive to their place of exercise.

The alternative is far worse. They’ll get by.

Not if those with serious underlying conditions remain cocooned.

The government can't keep borrowing money forever. To have a health service that is at least adequate, there must be a functioning economy. Therefore, the lockdown isn't helping people who have cystic fibrosis.

Did he say pre schools will open but other schools not until September?
    At a later stage.

So on the 18th, can we travel anywhere yeah? No mention of it. Or of the other 5 stages. What a terrible announcement.

Most people wouldn't have the attention span for listening to details.
I'd say they will be available in the next few days but to be taken with a pinch of salt as opposed to it being gospel.

I'm very relieved. Social distancing is impossible in my work place. Gives me another 2 weeks to consider my options, including looking for different work if it comes to it unfortunately if they won't let me work from home. Which is a pity because I like my work. But I like my health more. Gives us all another 2 weeks to learn more about this virus, get testing and contact tracing up to scratch and study the epidemiological trends in Ireland and elsewhere. I know some feel frustrated but I feel relieved.

Wouldn't limiting the number of customers entering the premises resolve that issue?

They hypocrisy of the government is that it called on voters in the run-up to the referendum on repealing the 8th amendment to "trust women", but it doesn't trust people to avoid close contact with those whose lives would be endangered by the virus.

How could they? Businesses etc were closed at the start of April and people flocked to the beaches and Glendalough. Of course there are clowns out there who can't be trusted to avoid close contact and avoid passing this on to others. They effectively caused the tighter restrictions for everyone!

yes my understanding was that over 70s were advised to cocoon but it wasnt "the law". the way they are now saying that over 70s will now be "allowed" out is odd.

But the cocooning of the elderly and of those with serious underlying health problems would have been enough to deal with the risk of infection.

Do you know what we should do? Have special shops, cafés, schools, libraries, services, train carriages and busses, petrol stations, supermarkets, clothes shops, toilets, etc reserved only for those who are cocooning and shouldn't really mix with the rest of us. It'd be for their own good, they wouldn't infect us, we wouldn't infect them. I think it's a brilliant idea nobody has ever had before........................ I think I had a dream about it................

The advice was they should stay at home, now they can go out. I see quite a few breaking it by sneaking out, quite right IMO.

Economy closed for another 2 weeks. Madness. Stats show under 40s arent as affected by this than the vunerable groups or elderly. But hey, keep them locked up.

And before anyway slates me its perfectly acceptable to have a view that the economy is now more important than this lockdow.

COVID-19 is causing strokes in young people and doctors don’t know why
..."These new stroke patients all had COVID-19, he said, and they were “substantially younger” than the patients in which doctors would normally expect to get strokes"

..."several other young, otherwise healthy people who had been admitted for [covid related] major strokes."

That's not what I meant. The building-up of herd immunity would mean that the cocooners would be able to socialise again in a relatively short period of time.

But the cocooning of the elderly and of those with serious underlying health problems would have been enough to deal with the risk of infection.

The reasoning behind the restrictions was to keep those admitted to ICU to levels to which they could cope with. We could have had those in potentially high risk groups cocooning but that assumes we know exactly who could be admitted which we don't. It could very well be someone who flaunts the rules and doesn't adhere to social distancing and wasn't considered someone at risk.

I looked at the links but...when do the dentists re-open for non emergency work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,342 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

    So positives
a start and end date for lifting of restriction
A bigger zone and if I heard right can go for a drive
Schools (I am guessing does not included LC) now know no school until new school year

    Negatives
No data on targets for each lifting hoping this will be given at later briefing today
A bit bare bones on exercise and outdoor activities but again hope that comes in the coming days

Very few at one time anyhow. My mom used to go swimming with a group but now only those that are within the 2km go and even then it’s on their own. You’d see the odd other person down there but everyone keeps their distance.

yet if one worker, friend, carer etc infected even one, the entire cocoon would turn into a covid cluster (as has happened in nursing hmes around the world)
