The Republic of The Congo.

or possibly the Democratic Republic of the Congo? Or the Republic of China or the Peoples Republic of China or Republic of Korea or Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. Using the correct name or description is important and referring to the Republic is a personal bugbear of mine that shouldn't wind me up but sometimes does

I do realise yes, but, as I said my post was specifically in relation to the fact that another person said technically the name of our country is ROI when someone else merely pointed out the proper name of our country. My point has nothing to do with the context of COVID-19 reporting or any big pictures....

So just a stupid irrelevant point in other words.

In your opinion, by the way the official COVID-19 statistical data for the 26 counties is reported under the name of Ireland, not the ROI.

South Korea and Vietnam do. And they are reaping the benefits.

Ireland is the whole of the island.

You can tell what republic people are talking about from the context of the sentence. You hardly read his post and thought he might be talking about the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was obvious from his post he was talking about the Republic of Ireland.

CMO was asked at end of briefing did they have any idea where the community cases are still occurring, Holohan said not definitively but wouldn't give any idea of where they are occurring, what work sectors, anything? is contract tracing analysis being done https://www.pscp.tv/rtenews/1RDGlQQXLQVJL

Ireland is the whole of the island.

Not for official statistical reporting of COVID-19 stats, in that case Ireland represents the 26 counties only.

Technically, legally and indeed any other way you want to look at it the name of the Country is Éire/Ireland, the description of the state is the Republic of Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland is a football team.

I stand corrected. Always thought it was part of the name. Thanks

Testing is of limited use if we don't use the figures as a means of tracking and quarantining, which we are not doing. We only use testing as a means of bean counting which is a total waste of resources.

Now wait a second you were using them to try and prove your point and now they are used against you they are useless. Come off it

Ireland is also the official name of the state which contains the 26 counties.

Anyone here wearing a face mask in public?

I see that countries who have made it mandatory are seeing a decline in their numbers.

    No it's not.

Ireland (/ˈaɪərlənd/ (About this soundlisten); Irish: Éire [ˈeːɾʲə] (About this soundlisten); Ulster-Scots: Airlann [ˈɑːrlən]) is an island in the North Atlantic. It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles, the third-largest in Europe, and the twentieth-largest on Earth.
Geopolitically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland (officially named Ireland), which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. In 2011, the population of Ireland was about 6.6 million, ranking it the second-most populous island in Europe after Great Britain. As of 2016, 4.8 million live in the Republic of Ireland, and 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.

Many people don't realise this, the description of Ireland became the ROI in 1948 to distinguish Ireland breaking ties with the British Commonwealth. It caused some debate in the Dáil at the time, this thread is doing well, geographical and historical lessons flying around. :)

The only way the name of the state could become the Republic of Ireland is by way of a referendum, the name is set by our Constitution, not some quoted internet reading.

You started the debate. You wouldn't let it lie.
So you reckon there is a difference between the republic of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland? One is a football team by just capitalizing the word Republic. FFS

    Actually I didn't, read back.

The Republic of Ireland is a football team.
The Republic of Ireland is also the legislated description of the country Ireland to recognise it's status as a Republic.

John Costello made a great point on this is 1948:-

    Name = Costello
    Description = Taoiseach

    my emphasis
    There's a huge difference.

I'd be skeptical about claims of success just yet. Antibody tests don't require the same kind of stringent approvals that vaccines do. It's basically as non-invasive as a pregnancy test.

What this means is that someone can sell an antibody test even if it's only 10% accurate. Nobody would buy it of course.

This is good news, but tentatively. Abbott is a highly respected brand and their test is for use in high-volume lab scenarios. So the quality controls will be high, the standards will be high.

I think the pandemic lends credence to the whole Greta Thunberg thing and climate change movement. Her point all along was that climate change has the capacity to cripple the global economy (in a variety of different ways) and to kill hundreds of millions. Perhaps one outcome of this year that people will take climate change a lot more seriously and treat it with great urgency.

Article on BBC website on Spain's nursing home tragedy

"Almost 6,000 people have now died in nursing homes in Madrid, after showing Covid-19 symptoms. "I think there was a lot of wrongdoing," said Castillo. "These people couldn't shout or say they were unwell. They died in silence and alone."

Public prosecutors are investigating possible crimes including manslaughter for neglect, mistreatment and abandonment. Monte Hermoso has not replied to interview requests by email; when contacted by phone, an employee told me they would not talk to journalists."

They have already been posted here in this thread, or the older versions. So do it yourself. Just google "Cheltenham COVID19 Ireland" and enjoy the read.
    241:380 is only 40% more.

    I'd like a 40% pay rise, it's not that much more :-)

    Edit

Jaysus, that would put deaths in the Madrid area at over 14,000, about 0.22% of the entire city population, more than 1 in every 500 residents
