The media ask the tamest questions at those briefings

Someone needs to say it as it is

I’m confused, what will be the benefit of extending lockdown when the majority of new cases and over 50% of deaths are in care homes? 593 is apparently how many deaths are from care homes. Most of the rest are also over 70s.

Is the threat big for people below 70?

Big enough to justify destroying our economy?

No absolutely not. The justification of the lockdown is non existant. Consider following statement on Gov.ie as of this evening "there are now 19,877 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland". That suggests 20,000 active cases, Covid lasts an average of 2 weeks, we started testing 8 weeks ago. There is no know figure for active cases so testing is irrelevant.

ICU is the only measured metric that should be used but that figure has also been hidden behind smoke and mirrors.
Death rate is also useless information as end of life patients are considered to be dying from Covid as opposed to the health issues that caused terminal illness.

Numbers of hospital admissions and numbers in ICUs are continuing to decrease, and we're nowhere near ICU capacity.

I don’t think so either but the usual targets like PAYE workers will suffer- public and private sector workers

I'm telling you if workers and unions here had as half as much balls as their French counterparts had there'd be none of that. Irish workers have been a week species for far too long.

Imagine asking such a stupid question about having an American football match in the Aviva in august with 35000 Americans at the National daily briefing. Who even cares?

What is the point of saying there is 20,000 cases? More than half have recovered if not more so I don't understand why it's used as a daily update of infected people.

To be fair it's not a bad question, it's an event that doesn't need a licence and in a backwards way he was asking about mass gatherings. The CMO wouldn't say as he said himself it's a long time away

August is a long time away. I doubt that match will affect one nursing home case if it was on this weekend

Wouldn't be hard if ^^^ is the standard.

Tony nicely dodged giving an exact number for where he wants to see ICU numbers.

Gathering of 5000 banned until September or just licenses?

What does a license have to do with anything? Whatever about easing restriction (which I’m in favour of) it would be ridiculous to have 35000 Americans come here this side of the new year imo

Just events that need a licence. Sporting events in stadiums dont need licences

I agree but it's a way in to ask the question with an example and see what answer they get.

Licensing etc is irrelevant I think. Relaxation of restrictions will likely be accompanied by a quarantine upon arrival, maybe not for travellers from the EU or the Common Travel Area, but certainly from the Americas, Asia or Africa. So no chance 35000 people will be travelling

Interesting idea being proposed in New York - close off streets, and allow restaurants to serve guests in the open air.

It's ideas like this that we need here too, and businesses should be pushing for.
    Lithuania doing the same thing.

I like it. Could be cold but potentially exciting. Just need to find a load of massive tarpaulins.

Why is he even answering. It should be a stock answer of "that's for the government to decide". He's the CMO, not the ruler of this country although maybe he's starting to believe he might actually be.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Came across an interesting article today. The similarities are striking yet the reaction completely different.

wjat is the story with gatherings of 5000? like sept 1st isint that faraway. i would imagine there will be a month of up to 2500 before this in August? thats GAA club games and small race meeting well within reach. i would say restaurunts and the like with under 100 people will be well up and running by july at that rate. surely not going to let over 5000 people gather in september out of nowhere

Rte reporting earlier that we wont see any dates associated with Fridays expected announcement, rather clinical phases associated with each phase, cases under x, ICU under Y etc.

Back to that "at an appropriate time" crack

    Some plan that is

That really won't go down well with people

If that is the case then I can see a lot of people flouting the restrictions because the government won't be upfront with the people and at least give them some sort of a timeline

You say this but realistically what are they going to do other than visit family and friends? Everything will remain shut.

Yeah that wont get buy in if it's what turns out to be the case. Could see people just deciding to go and visit family for a start

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭KrustyUCC

    Exactly

They will lose a lot of public support by going down that road

To be fair, if they actually established a concrete frame of reference for any of the metrics in that manner (the exception maybe being when they said we needed the growth rate under 5% - It's now under 2.....) it would be more of a commitment than any of the recent vague announcements.

Well, visiting family and friends for a start.

And going further than 2km to do it.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.
