Is anybody getting tired of all these war references in relation to this crisis. I heard Boris this morning talking about ‘this conflict’ and how ‘we are close to victory’. Then there are all the references to the ‘front line’.
Are we expecting the virus to come out shortly with its hands up waving a white flag?

It's a psychology tactic. We're all in this together, pull on the green jersey, we shall fight them on the beaches, come on Ireland, the blitz spirit, our grandparents fought Hitler and all we have to do is watch Netflix, take pictures of those not observing lockdown, inform on your neighbours, (But don't mention the civil war when our great grandparents killed their neighbours)

Have to disagree with you there...The efficacy of masks is wholly dependent on be using correctly...The mask should only be touched putting them on and taking them off...People think masks are as good as Hazmat suits with regards to providing protection...Which inevitability isn't the case from what i continue to see...its anecdotal i know, but anyone i see out in public wearing a mask is literally doing all the things one needs to avoid in order for the mask to do its job

The object of public masking is NOT to prevent the wearer getting Covid-19, the object is to prevent the wearer spreading it to others.

Please tell that Irish speaking anti-mask doctor who appears on our screens regularly. We seem to be ignoring pre-symptomatic and super spreaders and our terrible numbers testify to that fact.

The Czech citizens managed to produce home made masks for 10 million people in 3 days. It was a public movement there who led the government in making public masking mandatory there.

Our community transmission is still out of control. This means our testing and contact tracing are not where they need to be for us to responsibly come out of our so called lockdown.

What on earth are you talking about?

I don't see we have done very much different than the UK except perhaps not working on a vaccine which we will all be holding our arms out for if and when the UK develop it. Think of that.

There are about 70 vaccines being developed, one if which has a very large Irish contingent in its development.

The poor me, poor us routine is tiring Betty.

If we get down to zero deaths with an r0 of 0.1 that's the worst of all because it means maximum complacency. It calls for a triple-double lockdown with five-month extension.

Have you something to back that claim up ? As we're constantly being told its suppressed in the community.

Issue is nursing homes and long term care settings

If it's suppressed in the community, then why all the dithering about relaxing restrictions? Is the premise that we strangle the economy for fear that the virus leaks out of a nursing home (where it can presumably be well-contained)? Something just doesn't add up here.

Anyone any idea why ICU entry continues on a downward trend - when we have had very high days of + cases like 600/700 etc ?

Why was ICU rate higher earlier on ?

Could be 2 weeks before some of those require ICU

Earlier on, when we had limited testing capacity we focused on those already in hospital. Now we're testing far more and far less serious cases

    What are ICU admissions at?

Argentina banning all commercial airline ticket sales too and from the country until September

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/apr/27/coronavirus-live-news-boris-johnson-back-in-number-10-as-trump-denies-he-plans-to-fire-health-secretary
Argentina has banned all commercial flight ticket sales until September, one of the toughest travel bans in the world.

While the country’s borders have been closed since March, the new decree goes further by banning the sale and purchase of commercial flights to, from and within Argentina.

Industry figures have claimed it will put too much strain on airlines and airports. The decree, signed by the National Civil Aviation Administration, said it was “understood to be reasonable” to implement the restrictions, without elaborating.

Ok so about 15 % get very ill and 5 % need ICU.

So these days with say 600/700 cases are about 30 to 35 people going to ICU.

Hopefully we get nearer 200 cases per day within the week.

That’s where the problem started. Countries initially listened the WHO which caused massive delays in counties implementing there own restrictions from the start.

So a few here might remember me ranting about the pub I work for and their total neglect for the measures people were asked to follow before the bars were forced to close. Well now they are opening for collection of pints :/ guess barwork is an essential service.

Tomorrow's figures will have huge significance as they hopefully won't have the "weekend effect".

If they are high there's no chance of restrictions being lifted.

Even if they are in the 300s theres not much chance of them being lifted.

Are you surprised theres an increase in tensions, I was fully supportive of this 6 weeks ago but now, what people want is the roadmap to be given to us,

In the modern history of this planet, this has never happened, medical people have zero experience of it. Political people the same. We are learning more piece by piece, day by day. This is totally unprecedented. There is a want to start rattling the cages at political people, and what not but some of the buck stupid stuff I’ve seen, in terms of opinions and behaviors out there in streets, parks, pubs etc... I don’t buy this mental health BS either. That’s a phrase now that people chuck back at others to mask their own shît and selfish behavior too often...

You’d see a hugging competition in the park tomorrow and if you pulled somebody up you’d get... “it’s important for my mental health”... “well you can tell that to those you infect or to your family when you get infected “..

    Why?

Lot of increase these days is to do with testing nursing homes not from cases amongst the general public

Don't think the general public should be punished for the mess in nursing homes

If I was in a position of influence the last thing I would be indicating at this stage is a change in restrictions next week. If they do that people relax and we fail to deliver as much improvement as we could otherwise do between now and then.

I certainly do not foresee restrictions being "lifted" - that's way too risky. I do see an element of relaxation though. They need to leave their options open as long as they can. I don't think we will see much more info on Friday, as again the last thing the country needs is people thinking they have more freedom over the Bank Holiday weekend. The way I see it is they will probably make an announcement on Monday evening of limited changes to the restrictions applying probably from Tuesday. Hence I suspect there will be radio silence from Tony and the crew on the relaxation options for the rest of this week. He's usually not making announcements on Saturdays or Sundays, but they did turn up on Good Friday and Easter Monday so it would not be unusual for him to do a press conference on Monday

What will those changes be - limited opening of the likes of DIY shops and a relaxation of travel restrictions I would guess

Exactly this, further decisions on the general public should be based on the virus level withing the general public not on Nursing homes

Problem is, nursing homes, hospices, care facilities of every kind are staffed by large numbers of doctors, nurses, carers, physios, catering staff, cleaners, porters etc... they are places of a potential spread to the wider community.

The people that are crying are not looking for DIY shops lets be honest most of them are looking for the pubs.:D

There has been massive amounts of stock from pubs returned to the suppliers things like craft beers have very tight best before dates massive amounts of stock are going to end up going down the drain.

Behind the scenes in supply chains this lockdown is massive.

Can't see them lift travel restrictions

Might increase exercise from 2 to 5km

    Travel still banned

Won't make a pile of difference to many just cosmetic

Not disagreeing just pointing out the massive hidden costs on top of the massive costs everybody is aware of.

Collection of pints? How does that work? Have a sit down while collecting, maybe?

Businesses need to know this week what's happening

Informing them on Monday night about Tuesday morning would be rediculous
