The figures (including ICU admissions) are not as low as he would like.

I note with interest that New Zealand is declaring community transmission of coronavirus at zero and easing some restrictions, having implemented a travel ban and quarantine for all visitors right from the outset

Also note with interest that back in the early days of this ****show the original Corvid-19 thread was full of idiots who shouted down any suggestion that Ireland should do something similar...

Its incredible. I'm also disappointed. I was on the side of restrictinf travel. We would be doing so much more better. I remember someone replying to me say, it's here in the country now. We can't stop it, we can only slow it. It's like thugs turning up to your door for a break in and you open your door and let them in without fighting. I'm fuming now seeing how great new Zealand is doing.

Did a journalist just ask CMO about holding a wedding...????? Totally justified to fire the microphone at him...bellend

As much as I think journalists are sniveling, lying pieces of ****, I know people due to get married this year. They are angry, impatient, annoyed and hurt their weddings are postponed. Their range of emotions want them to go ahead ASAP

Rightly or wrongly, do not underestimate the stupidity of those with two legs.

Personally, I think they're mad to even have a wedding in healthy times, never mind during a pandemic

Whether people will say it or not, it's obvious why nursing homes weren't prioritised and correct imo.

Finite number of resources means those with less chance of survival have to be left behind. In the earlier days, we didn't have the PPE or testing capacity to allow for testing of them. Would people rather nursing home staff got PPE or nurses in hospitals, as it was in effect and either or choice. We didn't have enough for both. One of the nursing homes were stained staff were leaving to go work for the hse, so actual nurses was a constraint.

It might be crap to say it or acknowledge it, but it happens everywhere when you have resource constraints.

Numbers of new cases have been up and down last few days, like 700ish one day and then 300ish the next.

Science and sense. I am not going to paraphrase him here and get ripped to shreds for doing it.

I am sure the press conf will be available to play back , somewhere.

Probably due to nursing homes. Hitting more affected homes one day and less affected the next

If I heard him right he just said that he would not want differing measures here and in NI which would imply restrictions would not be lifted until NI do

We are a small country there will be fluctuations in the data set day on day, it can be down to the different sources they get the information. Its best to look at 5 day averages, which is what the medical experts are doing , that and analysis death figures on the day they occurred not when they were notified.

The numbers we hear day on day are as much a media exercise as anything else.

He's quoted on rte news that he hasn't made up his mind what decision he would recommend to the government on continuing or easing of restrictions
He wants to encourage people to work within the restrictions to drive down new infections

    He just repeated it

Basically he wants further improvements in the amount of new cases, cases in residential care, numbers in hospital and ICU and numbers of deaths

Also want to reduce restrictions only when NI do

NI are at least two weeks before they lift restrictions

NI is going to extend, if utterances by Boris and chums today are anything to go by

I think that it makes sense to wait for UK situation to calm down before releasing in Ireland, and then decisions re. quarantine, movement, closing borders etc can be taken on a Common Travel Area basis. Which I think would be better for everyone (and keep MoL happier!)

Im not against keeping the current restrictions in place longer but

1.1 million in receipt of some form of payment from the State is not sustainable for long especially when State income will be so low.

I'm not saying ths economy is more inportant either but that figure of 1.1 million cannot be ignored

He said as it is today he wouldn’t lift them but still a few days till the 5th.
If the rate continues to drop till then, some restrictions could be lifted.

In fairness, I'd say each and every one of them is fully aware of the problems with this

It's the finest of balancing acts : try and suppress the virus without killing off the economy

You may not like to hear it but it's true. Using your analogy, because of Irelands position in the world, the thugs were already in the house but you were still going on about barricading the front door. New Zealand's isolation meant they had a chance to stop covid from taking hold in the population, even if they acted long after us.

I would say the seismic shockwave from heads exploding in Dublin if restrictions were maintained there and let up elsewhere would rip a hole in the fabric of the Universe.

NI could lift before Britain, think even Scotland are thinking of lifting restrictions before England/Wales
