That is total cases. We are talking today's figures. Tony Holohan has said community transmission is currently zero.

To clarify the "probable deaths" issue which has emerged today, the ECDC yesterday adopted the WHO mortality reporting guidelines:-

    https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/sites/default/files/documents/covid-19-rapid-risk-assessment-coronavirus-disease-2019-ninth-update-23-april-2020.pdf

The definition of a COVID-19 death was confirmed by the WHO on the 16th:-

    https://www.who.int/classifications/icd/Guidelines_Cause_of_Death_COVID-19.pdf?ua=1

Probable COVID-19 is now officially listed on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases ICD-10 system:-

    https://icd.who.int/browse10/2019/en

The official international diagnosis and death code for COVID-19 is U07.1 for an identified COVID-19, or U07.2 for a probable COVID-19.

Enter "U07.1" to search for the official COVID-19 disease database entries (U07.2 will not return a search).

By my calculations approx. 40% of our deaths are lab confirmed hospital deaths...406/1014.

If this percentage for example was replicated in the UK they could have up on 50k deaths which would be nearly 4 times our death rate per capita.

While its possible that the care home deaths are higher here than there I would still think that they are definitely running at over 3 times our rate per head.

UK is a cluster eff. Ireland mortality rate hasn't changed much since 2018 even with this. UK is shocking for whatever reason.

    The reason is clear.

It's a cluster eff in the UK because they started down the 'Herd Immunity' road, then quickly changed their minds when they realized the terrible cost in lives. But it was too late... the 'Herd Immunity' damage had already been done.

    Ireland Coronavirus Statistics - Day 56 – Friday 24/04/2020
All data is cumulative and based on the date of official reporting

As and from 24/04/20 probale deaths are included in the official death figures, this is to comply with the WHO definition of COVID-19 deaths issued on the 16th and adopted in Europe by the ECDC yesterday, this is in compliance with what is known as the International Statistical Classification of Diseases known as the ICD-10, as a result a new column has been added into the charts to separate confirmed and suspected COVID-19 deaths.

    CFR = Case fatality rate
    NR = Not reported

Source: Department of Health, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre and the HSE.

    NOTES: -
    * Daily increase numbers on these dates represent both new cases and older cases reported from Germany which results in skewed daily % increases and average case reporting % changes, numbers are broken down as:-
    Day|Date|New Irish Cases|German Cases
    42|10/04/20|480|1035
    43|11/04/20|553|286

    46|14/04/20|548|284
    47|15/04/20|657|411
    48|16/04/20|629|95
    49|17/04/20|597|112

    51|19/04/20|445|48

    ~ Denotification of deaths:-
    10/04/20 – 1
    16/04/20 – 1
    21/04/20 – 1
    22/04/20 – 10
    23/04/20 – 3
    24/04/20 – 2

** "Recovered" rates are not reported by the Department of Health in the above link, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data supplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting.

Recovered statistics are only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed. Updated on 15/04/20 - The WHO reporting criteria has been changed recently to eliminate the 2 test requirement before reporting as recovered, now an outcome report is sent within one month of initial notification or when an outcome is known, the available health outcomes are either “recovered/healthy”, “not recovered", “death", “unknown" or “other", weather this helps create more accurate recovery numbers or skews them further is yet to be seen.

*** Due to the above issue with reporting of recovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

Can anyone explain herd immunity? Does it just mean everyone gets it so then they are immune...seems stupid if so.

If you don't know at this stage it doesn't reflect well on you either

All data is cumulative and based on the date of official reporting

Do you find it a nightmare trying to get the numbers, seem to be all over the place

    And another one...
And another one could well be Irish as there is lots of us over there. This isn't a joke.

The sample they use is PCR - not a test. They have never isolated COVID-19, so the results cannot be correct.

My relations are a large undertaker family, and I can assure you that all death certs have COVID-19 on them, and that the death statistics we are being given are incorrect. An average of 100 people die per day in Ireland. Death rates on this time the last year are lower and hospitals are empty, as my relations are in and out of them regularly. Something doesn't add up.

Explained by another but PCR is the test. Swab, extraction, PCR - RESULT (more complex than that but besides the point). COVID-19 is the disease, not the virus, so you're right we haven't isolated it. SARS-CoV-2 on the other hand, has been isolated and sequenced in many countries and many labs by now, therefore PCR is a very suitable procedure to identify presence of SARS-CoV-2 specific or coronavirus specific genes.

Hospitals are empty because you know, they cancelled a huge amount of non-essential activities, surgeries and appointments, widely announced and disclosed. Further to that, people are inside = massive reduction in trauma, crime related injury, accidents, trips and spills outdoors etc etc. There is no conspiracy here regarding fake death numbers, sorry to say.

No, it means that if a sufficient proportion (50 to70% maybe?), then the reproduction rate (R0) naturally falls below one, and the virus fizzles out, even without social distancing.

The people who develop immunity and survive effectively become a firewall, protecting the remaining 30 to 50 % (?) from ever being infected.

    Or so the theory goes.

Ireland at #8 in the world now with deaths / million when you take the micro states out.

    8 per million behind Sweden.

    RIP

And sadly, we must also consider people staying away from hospitals and not getting that persistent pain or headache or lump or whatever checked out when they really, really should. :(

That is total cases. We are talking today's figures. Tony Holohan has said community transmission is currently zero.

But is contact tracing being done? If at 0 is all the new cases from nursing homes and family homes so?

Perhaps come back to the topic when Sweden update their figures for new ECDC reporting requirements.

Can anyone explain herd immunity? Does it just mean everyone gets it so then they are immune...seems stupid if so.

'Herd Immunity' is a concept derived from community vaccination with a safe vaccine. If enough people gain immunity the virus has great difficulty spreading, because it is unlikely to find the next victim. This protects everyone, even those who were not vaccinated or those where the vaccine did not induce immunity.

The percentage of people needed to be immune depends on the infectivity of the virus.

This is totally different to the mad idea that a deadly new virus should be allowed to spread unchecked, in order to get enough people immune. This is what was started in the UK and they are paying dearly for it now.

Unfortunately some Right Wing types believe that it is worth sacrificing their elders, so that 'the market' can thrive.

All new cases are from known contacts with an infected person at the moment.

Community transmission relates to unknown sources. A person who gets it that can't be traced back to an infected person.

Anybody any idea of other countries using the new criteria for counting the deaths.

Too early to tell, but all UN member states should change over to this type of reporting fairly quickly.

The US was the first to change that I know of and have been reporting probable deaths since yesterday.
