How can cases be still rising when most people have been indoors for 3+ weeks......
Because if one person gets it in a house of 5 then that's realistically +4 new cases. Multiply that by however many had it.

In his latest podcast he mentions this:

There were several studies done on infections in family groups (i.e. not in hospitals) and the results are the following:

44% of transmissions of infections happen before the transmitter shows symptoms, the last day before symptoms show seems to be the most dangerous

4 days after the first show of symptoms, transmission is drastically reduced

1 week after the first show of symptoms, transmission effectively stops
Finally quotes from a real expert.

I've been thinking about my own family for a while and what we need to do if we suspect Coronavirus. It shows how important it is to isolate a family member immediately if there's a suspicion - get them into "the room" (ideally with an ensuite). Get a facemask on them immediately and get out of room yourself. Open the windows and reduce the viral load. Will probably hop into a shower myself and change my clothes. The first few days are the critical time to lower the chances of the rest of the family getting the virus.

An additional 631 more cases since yesterday according to Holohan, 49 new deaths.

I have noticed a more lax attitude in recent days myself in public and I wonder is the beginning of rises associated with fecklessness beginning to come through in particular related to the Easter bank holiday weekend, we shall see...

Certainly more people out and about though maintaining social distancing. The talk of easing restrictions is going to lead to some level of complacency. It’s human nature.

Without a doubt. I see many more people flaunting the restrictions now than before Easter.

Have to agree, people are getting way too lax. My estate was like a playground today.

99% of us are sticking to the restrictions. Unfortunately it’s no good having a 99% completed roof when it’s pouring rain outside.

    could=possibility
    should=suggestion to consider

Any time they have done something they've explained it. Could and should do not mean a change of policy.

So we should continue with without masks even when the weight of evidence has changed ?
CDC (USA) advice on use of face masks by the general public

Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others

You could spread covid-19 to others even if you do not feel sick

Everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they have to go out in public—for example, to the grocery store or to pick up other necessities

Cloth face coverings should not be placed on children under age 2 or on anyone who has trouble breathing or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected

Do not use a face mask meant for a healthcare worker

Continue to keep about 6 feet (2 m) between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing

I keep hearing that if you ring your GP with symptoms of Covid19 you are unlikely to get tested unless you are eldery or have underlying health issues. Even now. Is that true?

Exactly. So he may have got confused about where the name came from, even temporarily, I'm not a fan per se, but I'd say he is under a serious amount of pressure. But the mistake doesn't affect his ability to deal with the current crisis.

Doesn't matter though - he can rely on the Captain Hindsight chaps on here to jump on anyone that gets anything wrong these days. Always a pile of holier than thou, "I'd have done it better", chaps who can't wait to get a dig in. :pac:

Except the biggest blunders they've made, didn't require any hindsight... they just required accurate sight in the present... the here-and-now!

Clear and present danger is the appropriate term... they didn't have clear enough vision to see quite obvious issues, before they became big problems - even when warned by other nations about what exactly to expect.

So don't rabbit on with with this "captain hindsight" BS... Nobody is criticising our leaders for not being able to tell the future. And you are being deliberately disingenuous, by suggesting such!

How would you even know if someone has it before they showed symptoms? That's the tricky part. Just no way of knowing.

Under 4% increase. 147 in ICU, down again.

Isn't that a lag factor though because some of those 631 from today alone are likely to end up in hospital at some point?

Only 10% of nursing home cases reach hospital is that right?

Its a stretch, easter was 10 days ago. Certainly none of the deaths would have been caused by a suggested lax attitude over easter. Maybe the some of the increase in new cases, but they are better explained by the mass testing in nursing homes.

That's a NEPHT/HSE call and they've been consistent in their position/opposition. CDC have made their own call, probably egged on by a few tantrums by the orange one!

Its the angle/branding the government are putting on May 5th. "Stay the course", etc.. Simon Harris even tweeted "It will be worth it" which I agree with, but absolutely the wrong phrase to use... If I was only looking at rte and twitter, I'd be booking holidays/flights for May 6th, planning parties or a visit my granny in a nursing home.

The attitude is 'ah sure we're nearly there'.

It's up to 14 days incubation period which implies that it's right around now we would be seeing the effect of Easter.

It's 631 new cases, that is not the right direction no matter how it's spun.

Holohan saying as of now they can't do anything on the 5th of May. They need to see a lot more progress.

Definitely noticed this in the last day or two, more neighbours having friends or relatives over to visit here and construction vans all over the place too doing work.

Where people might have been leaving home once or twice a week for groceries seemingly there's several trips a day now.

We have almost 2 weeks left of this lockdown but it seems to be over already for more by the day.

Close contacts I reckon and the nursing home checks. The percentage daily rises are low.
