Anyone got comments on today’s figures? Why are they still so high?

It's Monday. The peak of the virus was about 2 weeks ago, the lag to death is about 2 weeks, the lag to reporting the death can be a few days.

RIP to all the souls lost.

That’s a big jump, some of them are from a few days ago I would say. Regardless shocking :(

I would imagine the situation in care and nursing homes has a lot to do with it.

Must remember this figure of 77 is not from last 24 hours, those deaths could have been spread over a number of days.

They didn't all happen on one day and may include a weekend backlog of reporting

    It's a horrendous total though

That gym goers are fitter that runners etc. Most do low intensity exercise in gyms. Catching breath while on their mobile. I frequent gyms and train outdoors.

That wasnt what I said though

Gotta look back two weeks or more for these deaths from when the cases were originally picked up. Sadly it'll probably be more in time based on the current daily case numbers. :(

And any other dead that they've only been notified of today that is now covid related.

Really? Because when the case numbers were bad I’m pretty sure you were going on about how you can’t make any insight into case numbers because it all depends on how many had been tested in total in the last 24 hours? Now, when the deaths are by far the worst figure we’ve seen so far, cases are being called “the one to watch”. When will people realise we’re not doing all that well right now...

Surely someone will be held accountable for this nursing home scandal? A lot of good was done but it's criminal how nursing homes have been devastated.

That’s quite a spike. I would doubt they’d just release a figure like that without explanatory notes if there’s something odd about it like aggregation of an unusual number of reports.

Since they ain’t, I assume it’s an actual spike.

    Christ almighty, RIP.

    401 new cases.

another big increase, less then yesterday but still the equivalent of 5K new cases in UK

You literally cannot compare countries. Don't know how many times that has been said.

Deaths are going to stay high for a while
New cases are dropping those presenting at hospitals and ICU are dropping

This is a process and gradual drop that we’re going to see

A lot of people would love to tell you where to go. Have a bit of respect.

When cases are 500 again tmrw you'll have some more bull.

Have you got a source to verify this?
It's common knowledge that it's not a 24 hour figure.

I imagine those 77 are actually spread over a few days. Not that it matters to those families.
The general trend in cases seems to be going down

Thanks for pointing it out, I'm not the only one then who noticed that
He spins the stats all over the place, zero understanding of data

Something went seriously wrong with care and nursing homes , surely the owners / management of nursing home will have or take some responsibility as well as the government. large care home near me and nearly a 1/4 of all residents have it ... not only they are running out of staff as a huge number of care assistants are in quarantine and currently running on a skeleton staff even though HSE has promised extra staff.
Some staff currently working 24 hours on and off cycle..

77 new deaths is a shockingly high figure no matter how much the deniers might want to play it down. How many of those are from nursing homes or day care centres?

Deaths are a lagging indicator, and will peak around 2/3 weeks after the highest number of cases. It takes time from first getting the disease to dying.

Unfortunately things can be getting better even while deaths are increasing.

God it’s very sad and depressing. So many families devastated.

I’m finding it hard to stay positive now, it’s like looking into an eternity of bad news.

    But have to hold out..

    Because it is very weekend
    Rte say so every weekend

Some places don’t Report deaths at weekends

Surely someone will be held accountable for this nursing home scandal? A lot of good was done but it's criminal how nursing homes have been devastated.

It’s a mess but it’s also one that’s played out in the U.K., US, Spain, many countries you wouldn’t expect in Northern Europe. Even France surprised me.

Something went horribly wrong in nursing homes / congregated care generally.

I’m not saying our elderly care is wonderful. It certainly isn’t but this pattern is repeating across pretty much all comparable countries.

Also I think the critique of the government over estimating the scale of the surge is a bit unfair and also repeated elsewhere. They had no option and coils only really base it on what was happening in Italy and Spain. If we had under prepared you’d have had massive problems too

It seems to me we are going to start damning everyone with the benefit of hindsight and immediately trying to find targets to scapegoat.

Our health system has had problems for decades and decades. It’s nothing new. I don’t really see why we keep pinning the whole issue on one minister.

Frankly, it seems have performed far better than I was expecting it to. I was really worried we would just end up with a total hospital meltdown and thankfully that did not happen because all the stops and blocks are pulled out.

I’m no fan of FG but I’m also not really seeing how we are doing to sort the healthcare system long term without massive reform and brining everyone on board with that.

All of the Irish political parties seem to want to achieve universal cover and better services. The problems have been systemic and chronic structural issues more than political in my view anyway.

of course you can, that's a silly statement you picked up in here most likely

No you can't. You can't compare death figures because they're counted differently in each country. You can't compare cases because every country tests differently. Our testing numbers are miles (and I mean miles) ahead of the UK.
