    No.

But it does put into context some of the winging on this thread about our civil liberties being trampled all over just because there are Garda checkpoints throughout the country.

That's fair enough but on the other hand you cant say that not being able to travel more than 2k from your house is not fairly strict. First time in my life I cant go where I want, of course there will always be places worse than us but this notion that this lockdown is soft is plain wrong.

    I don't want more restrictions.

BUT... I expect the 'powers that be' to check and quarantine people at the airport (or on boats) and not keep topping up the virus here with probable spreaders from the UK or elsewhere.

The BBC were saying earlier tonight that it has the potential to be worse than Italy there.

That and mask wearing in public... like all the best practice Asian countries do.

Are you used to wearing masks ?

The daily deaths reported are the deaths reported in that time although they may have happened on different days. That chart shows the deaths on the day they happened.

Why are not being shown that chart, what's wrong with them giving us some postive news.

    Is this formally published anywhere?

Masks for all on the 6th of May, or stay home.

Well, keep in mind that there are views out there, that have not been discounted, that say the risks out in public/shopping are very minimal unless you have been sneezed or coughed on. Hence very rare reports of supermarket staff falling ill, and they are 'breathing' the air of all customers all day. The following post is one of many in relation to people's experiences (including supermarket workers on here) in their local supermarkets:

In my local supervalu, there has not been one employee out due to Covid 19. I was really surprised but think thats a really positive thing to hear.

I'm not saying masks are not worthwhile, but the CMO has officially stated that community transmission is "close to zero". If community transmission is close to zero, then people are not getting sick in their droves doing the weekly shop (mask or not). As for walking outside, unless you are in the slipstream of a very heavy breather for a while, you are not taking much risk without a mask. If you were, countless thousands of walkers you see every day would be falling ill. And it doesn't look like they are.

    Interesting article posted here earlier:

Tony Holohan confirmed it during the briefing today.
The highest actual death total for a 24hr period is 37, on 7th April.

I actually have worn masks... and the best way to keep yourself safe is to assume that you have Covid 19 and that everyone you meet has it too.

Unlikely I agree, but with asymptomatic spreaders and proven virus shedding in pre-symptomatic cases, one can never be sure, even when meeting people who are well (apparently).

All the Asian countries who are most successful in containing the virus wear masks, without exception.

So... why try to 'invent the wheel' again. Just follow best practice countries and be done with it.

Small bit of hope there from the Oxford vaccination team. If it does work out they'll be international heroes and it'll be well deserved. At the end of the day this will pass and we'll pull through. People always have. The world's best minds are working on this and they'll receive ample funding to do that work. Someday it'll be a cautionary tale to tell children and grandchildren.

Yea sorry, you don't have a vaccine at all unless it's tested, approved and can be deemed effective after mass human trials.

Good luck to them, but I'd imagine everyone behind vaccine research will talk up their particular project. Hopefully one of them gets it right.

    Ireland Coronavirus Statistics - Day 49 – Friday 17/04/2020
    All data is cumulative

Have reduced the decimal points on the % rates (bar the CFR and population rate as this is probably statistically important) to make the numbers easier on the eyes, if there are any suggestions for different decimal point for more accurate reporting let me know.

    CFR = Case fatality rate
    NR = Not reported

Source: Department of Health and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

    NOTES: -
    * Daily increase numbers on these dates represent both new cases and older cases reported from Germany which results in skewed daily % increases and average case reporting % changes, numbers are broken down as:-
    Day|Date|New Irish Cases|German Cases
    42|10/04/20|480|1035
    43|11/04/20|553|286
    44|12/04/20|430|297
    45|13/04/20| 527|465
    46|14/04/20|548|284
    47|15/04/20|657|411
    48|16/04/20|629|95
    49|17/04/20|597|112

    ~ Denotification of deaths:-
    10/04/20 – 1
    16/04/20 – 1

** "Recovered" rates are not reported by the Department of Health in the above link, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data supplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting.

Recovered statistics are only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed. Updated on 15/04/20 - The WHO reporting criteria has been changed recently to eliminate the 2 test requirement before reporting as recovered, now an outcome report is sent within one month of initial notification or when an outcome is known, the available health outcomes are either “recovered/healthy”, “not recovered", “death", “unknown" or “other", weather this helps create more accurate recovery numbers or skews them further is yet to be seen.

*** Due to the above issue with reporting of recovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

Yea sorry, you don't have a vaccine at all unless it's tested, approved and can be deemed effective after mass human trials.

Right you'd best tell the Oxford professor of virology how to do her job in that case.

    I hadn't seen that.

It could be a political play by the WHO to try and persuade governments not to end their lockdowns prematurely.

Or the WHO are correct and those scientists in California are putting too much emphasis on antibody tests that may be unreliable.

    Take your pick!!

We must keep in mind the vested interests that stand to make billions from an eventual vaccine. Any treatments or medication that may help in the meantime will not be in the interests of these people.

Not sure about anyone else but Johnson and Johnson have pledged that any vaccination from them will be non profit

The Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates says his foundation is funding the construction of factories for seven coronavirus vaccine candidates.

Gates said the foundation would end up picking only one or two of the seven, meaning billions of dollars spent on manufacturing would be abandoned.

He said that in a situation where the world faces the loss of trillions of dollars to the economy, wasting a few billion to help is worth it.

The seven have not yet been chosen AFAIK, but it will shorten the time to mass production of vaccine for the world, if any of the seven pass the safety and efficacy studies.

Don't worry someone will be along shortly to piss all over any glimmer of good news. Only misery and doom saying are allowed here. God forbid the self appointed virologists and financiers not get their 2 cents in.

Where, because there are none near me. Is it just somebody playing a bit of loud music.

Seems the number of daily deaths is actually declining, which suggests the numbers announced every night were registered days previously:

I'm confused so daily death numbers are incorrect for ROI

I'll take the word of a virologist working at Oxford who is probably a leading expert in her field over a randomer on a web forum. I'll go ahead and do that.

Media filled with hyperbole and populations unwilling to take responsibility and accountability have lead us here. They are just gagging to be held captive in thier own homes.

If people want to curl up in a ball in the corner of thier room for the duration of this they are free to do so. The rest of us should have the freedom to continue life as normal and take personal responsibility for the outcome.

Will you take responsibility for giving someone else a disease that will kill them?

Believe what you like, unproven vaccines have real risks. The 1976 swine flu vaccine was linked to a rare paralytic neurological illness called Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Maybe you can volunteer to be in the test group, maybe your balls will fall off.
