This is not entirely true. Economic turmoil will kill people to and send thousands into depression so it cannot be pushed aside.

Before the modern ideology of imported cheap labour took hold, these kind of jobs helped people through college. Admittedly only working class students benefitted. You can get students to work for little if you feed them beer, bacon and cabbage and put them in a tent.

You've went from me and mammy will do it, to I won't do it unless someone gets sent home in the space of an hour.

20 minutes out working, and you'd be leaving, and that person would need to be re recruited.

It's not just the 189 that are needed. We'll need 1000's over the course of the growing season. What next? **** the strawberries, alright ok. That'll also wipe flavoured yoghurts, jams, anything jam goes into, ****ing strawberry condoms, all out next. But what's this, another fruit or vegetable crop needs picking cos it's ripe? What should we do? Let it go to **** as well?

This is not the issue. They are europeans and can stay if they want for as long as they want. The issue is that free travel is dangerous no matter where they are coming from. We have they thing under control but its pointless if we are allowing dozens of untested people in without quarantine.

many people are missing the point - It'[s not about foreigners or strawberries.

as a nation we are all making sacrifices for this Covid19 .

People are confined to house (2km) haven't seen family in weeks, lost jobs and debts mounting up, cancelled holidays , firms going bust etc..etc…

The Taoiseach addresses the nation and gives the heartfelt pleas etc..
    Now we see this.

Whatever you say , these people are adding to the mix. This cant be denied.
At a time when no more than 10 people can attend a funeral.

It's nonsense behaviour and makes a mockery of our "lockdown" and the threats from Drew Harris.

The next time the Taoiseach addresses the nation to give more updates and pleas for compliance .
His words will be empty and insincere cos of this.

EXACTLY!. It was being discussed on RTE with Sean O Rourke, Damien McCullach and another from Countryfile coming to Keelings Defence. Both contributes having links with Keelings through Bord Bia.
Keelings would not come on air. Rourke saying how important growers like this are to the economy. Completely missing the point.
In fact the Interview probably did more to vex people than ease the hysteria. Did anyone hear it. Talk about circling the wagons to prop up the profits of a private company.

seasonal strawberries for a hugely successful private family business are not essential for the survival of the masses and importing 189 workers is an obscenity in this climate.

how many strawberries are worth a doctor or nurses life?

Essential travel restructions only apply to other people.

That aren't providing essential services, like food.

    What about alcohol?

Should we stop the sale of it as its non essential and will all the outraged on this thread be happy about that?

They tried to hire locally, but couldn't get the numbers. What do you want?
They're really angry that Keelings don't have the power of clairvoyance and didn't train Irish workers to do this work last year so that they wouldn't have to bring in skilled workers during a pandemic.

Honestly, the whole, "I have to stay 2km from home rabble rabble" stuff is pure ranty nonsense.

You'd swear every essential worker in the country was working within 2km of their home and social distancing while at work.

paw patrol, why are you not outraged that the Tesco worker is "allowed" to travel 10km to work every day?

Gar, these are 190 of several thousand that are needed and will be brought in, not just by Keelings.

So if all these people are going to be brought in why are we bothered with this lock down at all,
It appears with a lot of posters on here think that the likes of a fruit company is more important that peoples lives,

Pat Kenny interviewing Simon Harris about this now on Newstalk. To be honest I find Simon Harris responses extremely irritating and patronising.

Hes basically saying there's nothing to see here and "maybe" in a few weeks we will look at this a bit closer! In the meantime its vital for our citizens to stay at home and wash their hands! He's damn patronizing , feels like we are being bold school children and being told what to do. Crazy!

Anyone listen to James O'Brien yesterday?

32,000 applied for these jobs in the UK
    900 were short listed
    Less than 112 signed contracts

I can't believe there are 48 pages on this. Is this some easy outlet for people to vent their built up anger and frustration at? Wtaf is this situation doing to impact any of your lives except in the positive to keep the food chain going. Last I checked we all (as in all countries) need to be doing their best in that regard or we're all screwed.

They're also not isolating for 14 days.
Already this morning they are walking around Termonfeckin village in groups and going to the village shop.
Locals were scared enough to go there before this .

Hmm.....anything that requires hundreds of labour units and cant be harvested mechanically can be listed non-essential

What diet requires strawberrys as a vital componant to be balanced??

why assume that Irish people couldn't do this? Something genetic? As I said students used to do that, I picked apples myself as a kid when I visited family in Tipperary. Automated now.

Full union wages by the way.

As for the economy, its a bit odd to protect ( checks notes) Strawberry picking when every other part of the service economy, construction and so on is thrown to the wolves.

Need to include weed nowadays :pac: .....literally thousands of irish passed through fruit farms in ozzie....picking bananas is forever more physical than strawberry picking

Personally, while it's more physical from a weight point of view - having experience of watermelon picking, banana humping and picking strawberries, I can tell you that out of all three I would gladly carry the 50kg bunch of bananas all day every day rather than pick another single strawberry or watermelon.

All the lads in here who say they'd do it for less than the covid payment have never done it before, that's for sure.

Really? If true this is a disgrace. What about Keelings statement that they would be restricted?

What fruits/vegetables produce do you deem essential enough that we should continue to maintain supply?

I dont get the issue here.

200 people arrive, pick food, then leave.

They will 99% only mix with themselves, they cant go to a pub, cinema etc and without people picking food we would have a much bigger problem in a month.

This is probably much safer than having 200 Irish workers all working together and then going home each night.

Get out of here with your rationale. 200 of them are stealing a job from garIT

Other than food production which has quite sensibly been included on the "essential" list.

We've had work restrictions, like everyone else in the country, but wait til they find out that our average daily travel, per vehicle, is still 200odd kilometres.
