Holohan has the patience of a saint. They're just trying to get him to say something that will give them a headline. I heard him say he will be looking at some data tonight so his day isn't finished and he has to put up with that rubbish.
If there's one thing that we take from these press conferences - Irish reporters are genuinely awful. They're like a pack of uneducated sheep just shouting the first thing that comes to their head.

They’re newly diagnosed, what part of that don’t you understand? They SHOULD be included, not all of us are in favour of Chemical Ali type reporting of numbers.

They should NOT be included in a growth calculation. Surely you can see that

I wonder at what number of days old are returns from German tests relevant to current figures and therefore included the same as Irish lab results.

Also with 20% of the backlog not sent to Germany it would appear that this 20% of results is included in Irish new cases ...this could be partially responsible for some of the increase in Irish new cases.

The increase in new cases could also be as a result of additional lab capacity coming on stream.

I think the constraints caused by the lab capacity and the subsequent huge backlog have rendered comparisons and growth rates of new cases virtually impossible to compare accurately day on day.

Your pretty much spot on in what your saying. Taking out the german results gives a good idea of where we're at but personally check the ICU and hosptial numbers before going near the case numbers

You say this but the reality is very different - simple example are kids touching the button to cross the road - how many people are touching this, people putting hands of polls outside, gates etc.

Most supermarkets have limits on who gets in, and one person per household. some supermarkets have one way systems to avoid cross overs etc.

Ah yeah I know, I'm not saying it's not possible to catch it outside. I'm just saying the a supermarket is probably the most likely place for someone to get it right now, except of course hospitals.

    ■ = Daily case reporting change averaged over the past 10, 7 and 3 days and from day 1

Source: Department of Health and the Health Protection Surveillaence Centre.

*"Recovered" rates are not reported by the Department of Health in the above link, these figures are taken from the Worldmeters and Johns Hopkins websites which use data suplied by the DoT to the ECDC under the WHO Guidelines for reporting. Recovered statistics can only be published as "recovered" following two successful tests of being clear of the virus under the WHO reporting guidelines, as a result it is likely the recovered data is skewed.

** Due to the above issue with reporting of revovered cases the number of active cases is also likely skewed.

Blow all the bridges on the M50 and setup an escape from New York type scenario

Yes, the non Dubs, instead of eating turf would be required to eat their babies as the supply chain, and intelligence, all but dried up down there.

I think we'll be able to accurately judge growth from Thursday onwards. That's when the backlog is supposed to be gone.

But where are people getting the virus in the first place? it can't magically transport to your home. Everything else is closed so they must be catching it in the supermarket.

Family Home, Household contacts of people already infected
Health Care workers in hospitals, nursing homes and residential care settings.
Residents in nursing homes and residential care settings.
There will still be some level of community spread, but it must be a small percentage of the pre-restriction spread rates.

My brother got a positive test result today from a test done 20 days ago plus the 5 days he was waiting for the test, he has long since recovered. Those German test results are really skewing the figures.

Rest in peace to those that have died. I hope to God we've come to the peak of this. I still cannot get my head around gatherings like Cheltenham. The organisers have blood on their hands as far as I'm concerned.

Even in the week after Cheltenham public transport in London and other UK cities were sill crammed with people, schools and colleges were still open as were pubs and clubs and other sporting events were still going ahead as normal. What we seeing happen there now is by no means wholly down to the Cheltenham racegoers.

Actually, they said today that 11,000 was the total backlog and that 80% of these had been sent to Germany and the remainder were being analysed in Ireland.

Everything of any use bar Dublin port is outside the M50 anyway

How are they skewing the figures?

They should NOT be included in a growth calculation. Surely you can see that

As an exercise, I'd be interested to see how things would look if they could be distributed to the dates when they most likely should have been counted, i.e.

    - Look at the dates the samples were taken
    - Look at what the average time it was taking to return results
    - Add the average number of days it was taking to return results to the sample taken date
    - Add the results into those days

While I don't agree they should be included today as new cases (misleading, skews model, etc.), they still need to be accounted for in some way.

Because they're not new tests. You're adding a number to both positive results and resolved cases.

The CMO showed exactly this in the press conference. There's no spikes whatsoever in growth.

Up to 30 days ago. Ok. But many are actually only 15/16 days old according to people online saying they have received a German result. That's not that different.

They were giving German total tests and total positives last week. From the percentages in the early stages it would appear that all those results were consistent with our older test percentages.
It would have appeared that some of the newer test results were coming through towards the end of last week.
Without comparative figures for the last few days it's harder to be sure but the daily average of new cases from Germany has doubled in the last few days compared to last week. This could indicate that they are catching up and possibly only 5 to 7 days old in their current batches.

But they're not being announced as new test/cases. You're adding a number to the overall cases- I dont see how that is skewing the figures

Adding to the total and not reporting them as new is exactly the way it should be done. People are reporting them as new tests, that's the point. It's giving a false narrative.

Thanks, fair enough. I didn't catch it today. Will try and see if that material is available to have a look somewhere.

I guess maybe my understanding of flattening the curve is wrong as with lockdown restrictions I was expecting decreasing positive cases and less deaths by now but from what I see both are still high in numbers and we haven't hit the peak surge

3 outbreaks in prison yet we were told they were case free previously
My very simple understanding of flattening the curve is that day on day cases are roughly the same so the growth flattens instead of increasing compared to previous days

It also means the overall increase as a percentage of total cases decreases

You could take reassurance from the briefing where they said we have not seen a big jump in demand for ICU its static the past week

Finnish researchers, using a super computer, modelled a scenario where a person coughs in an aisle between shelves, like those found in grocery stores; and taking into consideration the ventilation. Aalto University, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Finnish Meteorological Institute each carried out the modelling independently, using the same starting conditions.

Per capita deaths and cases we are top 10 which is disgraceful considering we are an island nation, don’t have a dense population and most live in houses. We just seem to be making it up as we go along, see what other countries do, a bit of a, a bit of b and a bit of c, look earnest during press conferences, prepare west wing style speeches that say nothing but sound great. Spin will not beat the virus.
We're not, and likely not even close.

Ireland is reporting 10 more deaths from Covid-19 than Ecuador. Have a look at this video from BBC and tell me if you believe that for a second.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-latin-america-52234127/coronavirus-ecuador-struggles-to-bury-its-victims

You can be damn sure there are many more poorer countries as well that are not even reporting a fraction of the deaths occurring, just dumped in a grave and forgotten about.

Even the UK are only reporting hospital deaths, and totting up the extras at the end of the week (sometimes). German colleagues fo mine have said that there are doubts there about the reporting of cases and the authorities being selective with numbers - they're seen as one of the gold standards.

It would be great if everyone could just pull together here for a few weeks and try to beat this thing, instead of the constant "well our government are only temporary/caretaker and the HSE are ****e, yada yada". We're in one of the best places to be during a crisis like this.

Yea i agree its the correct way, I just dont see how it is skewing the figures..If people read them the wrong way then that just fuels the 'pandumbic' but that cant really be helped

Because they are mainly old and recovered cases, people looking at 900 new cases each day for the last few days and the next few think the lock down is not working and things are escalating out of control.
