It's actually insane how out of shape some of our Gardaí are, I was only thinking to myself travelling through Germany and Spain over the summer how insanely fit their police forces were. Police in Barcelona could have been fitness models.

I don't think she has been unfairly treated, she's young and at our age it really isn't that difficult to get into shape quickly, at least fit enough to do well in a bleep test. I did one with a group recently and I scored over way over 12. I don't take my fitness seriously at all.

I bet she stepped on toes within the "organisation" they're known for it, the bleep test fail is an excuse.

Mostly lards in detective units are ok though. This story stinks.

What stinks is she had ten years to sort it out when 10 months should have been plenty. No excuse. I'm getting on now and would probable not pass it but if I was told it's pass or the bullet and given a bit of time to train, I would pass it.

I find that hard to believe. 12 requires a high level of fitness. That's eru level almost.

The Spanish police are given training time fyi. Not all forces but the main ones

The test is not for serving Gardai, it's for Gardai in training or still in probation. She wasn't sacked, she just hasn't passed her probation period, despite multiple attempts and time to do so.

To put this in perspective, she started training in Templemore 2 intakes before I did, and ended up passing out on the same day as me, due to being reverted back twice for failing the test multiple times. I have since completed my probation, got the degree, and left the Gardai over 18 months ago. This shows how many opportunities she has had to pass the test in this time, way too many in my opinion.

The test isn't even remotely difficult for a semi fit person or an unfit person who puts a little effort in for 8-10 weeks beforehand.

Her father campaigning about this should be ashamed for the blatant nepotism going on here.

I was wondering why exactly you'd have yer da on radio after being fired for being unbelievably unfit at just 32. But lo and behold her father is a retired Garda Sergeant. Amazing that being a Gard is often an inherited trait that runs in the family even after the Public Appointments service took over hiring.

He's probably in shock now that Drew Harris is actually professionalising the force, and that his daughter may have to go to work in the private sector and is no longer set for life with super early retirement, massive pension, the ability to rack up overtime and all the other perks the Gards have.

Just to be clear I dont know the ex Gard in question and frankly I know how bloody hard it is to be fired, and would wish her all the best in the future. But to be clear there are literally thousands of applications for Garda positions and the qualifications are their for all to see (and overall theyre pretty damn low for the pay, pension and responsibility you get). She had literally YEARS to pass this test. I mean what other organisation would tolerate that.

As for boardsies recommending the public pay full whack to employ her as a desk jockey you can feck right off. "Gardai have difficult jobs - they risk their lives" when it comes to the next round of strikes for more pay etc etc.

Now that the story is public knowledge she will either be let back in, get a payout because everyone deserves a medal so unfair treatment or a combination of both.

Also push ups on their knees as part of a fitness test? What a joke

I'd def run 2km no bother at 12km/h, but the turning must up the level considerably over running in a straight line, I'm def. no athlete. I feel sorry for her, they should have had her out years ago, when it would have been easier for her change direction career wise. They've done her no favours by stringing her along for 8 or so years. If you are going to fail, fail early.

That's 2km in 10 minutes. About what the old requirement was.

It's not about just being able to jog guys, its about judging the correct speed and being able to steadily increase that speed each turn. If you sprint at the start you will be out of steam before you reach the needed level.

Definitely requires a bit of practice

It's true, unfortunately I can't back it up. Googling it there for my age level its considered very good, but short of excellent. For my age group 13.10 is considered excellent. I was actually surprised myself. Completely bolloxed after however. Could be a combination of genetics, youth and I used to keep very fit. No idea really. I'm still in my 20's.

That would explain the Spanish police...thanks for the info.

Well you wouldn't get in with that spelling and I'm sure you have tried considering how cushy a number it is.

Plenty of private careers are secure, plenty allow early retirement and plenty pay overtime. No Garda was ever a millionaire but plenty of private sector are.

Fair few military lads have joined the Gardai and been terrible unfit coming in.

Usually passed a fitness run under mysterious circumstances as they were massive lads and that's all they really cared about then

A mate of mine joined after serving as a Sergeant in the Army for several years, a former all Army triathlon winner. He reckoned the physical test were a Micky mouse effort that even an overweight whimp would pass.

Constructive and definitely related to the point.

    7.6

That's still in the awkwardly slow jogging phase of it.

I know back in the day I'd regularly do 11-12 but I was a lazy sh!te (more of a sprinter than endurance/distance runner), some lads did fair bit more.

    No millionaire Gardaí what???

Back in the days of the last recession Gardai were retiring on literal millionaire pension pots.

Nowadays Gardai are the highest paid public servants with an average salary of 67K, or 100K when you take the pension into account!

    www.irishtimes.com/business/work/gardaí-are-best-paid-public-servants-earning-1-300-a-week-1.3715038

Nice of you to lecture us in the private sector about job security because the dole queue is gonna be jammers since we've just hit 16.5% unemployment in the last month, up from 4.5

How many public servants have to even take a pay cut? ZERO!

Most average fit person could run for over 2 hours at that pace.

She has asthma lads ffs, what about all the fat male detectives.

IMO harsh, did she complain a higher up or something?

There are many top athletes and cross country skiers that have asthma.

The public service is open to join. Apparently you’d end up as a millionaire and retire early. Sounds great

That's 15 miles in two hours, sorry but there is now way the average fit person would do that.

There was an extraordinarily high percentage alright at one point if memory serves me right.

Wasn't there some medication that was allowed if you were asthmatic that helped with stamina?

It isn't all about catching someone though. If you are not aerobically fit then you are much less likely be able to defend yourself from a a determined attacker.

You are a danger to yourself and worse to your colleagues.

She wasn't sacked because she was unfit. She was sacked because she refused to get fit.

That was well said, fair play, I agree with that explanation.

Interesting. Who was the team doctor during that period?

Not talking about the average unfit person.

This is a beat community guard, not a althlete, apples and oranges.youre compareing, will black and tan Charlie or RUC Harris sack the majority of the detective units?

They will in their eye, watch this story there's more too it.

I think that's a bit of an urban myth. I think they have to apply for a TUE.

A lot of cyclists have asthma. It almost seems like a prerequisite to have asthma to be successful

Average fit person is what exactly? 5 min kms sure no problem. For two hours? hmm.

There was a case a couple of years ago in the US where the standard of firefighters fitness test was significantly lower for females compare to males.

Sure that be 3:30 marathon pace. I'm not saying they need to keep it up for 26 miles.
