Did you buy from Irish main dealer or otherwise?
How do you find it size wise for daily driving?
I think a 730d m sport standard wheelbase is a great all rounder.
when I see two/three year old cars with mega specs for the price of a new 520d, I say to myself that these are a great bargain, then I think what will it be worth in a couple of years time and what could it potentially cost if something goes wrong out of warranty?

Bought in the UK. Size is fine, feels no bigger than a F10 I had a few years ago.
It’s fantastic, adaptive air suspension, massage seats and lovely soft nappa leather. It’s not fast but i don’t feel like driving it fast (I’m getting old?) I just waft around in it. Mine is still in warranty for a couple of months and has over a year of a service pack too.
I’d a new 5 series on loan for a month last year and this is a whole other level above. No doubt I’ll sell it later this year and buy something completely different!

What kind of money do you think it will go for in 3 or 4 months time?

No idea but to be honest I’m more concerned about getting back to work and keeping myself and my family Covid free at the moment

Nice of you to say - this kind of civility is really missed in other forums/social media.

Been looking at post-corona options and they seem to be in or around the same price as a 330/335/530d a year or two older landed. Seeing quite a few 2018 M-Sports doable for 28/29k

Spotted 2018 530e SE at 24.5K (UK Import) couple of days ago and was thinking of buying it but it got sold while I was reading reviews.
I guess we could get similar deals in next few weeks but I want something with BMW warranty with an option to buy extended one.

Think you can pretty much buy the warranty off the street so import away, I'd say. https://www.bmw-warranty.ie/Start

I see Ford UK are attempting to encourage new PCP uptake again with covering the first 3 months payment in form of a contribution and deferring the next 3 payments until next year:

    https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/ford/352021/ford-offers-six-month-payment-holiday-new-customers

Not sure how that will work if many people don't know whats around the corner concerning their employment status. It's obviously just testing the water and it's early days yet but I think there will need to be stronger actions from manufacturers if they want to help consumer confidence to return in any significant shape or form.

The UK always seems to get more generous incentives and discounts than we do possibly due to their much greater market size and importance to the manufacturers.
I saw on the news yesterday their economy is losing 2.5 billion a day during this crisis. Scary stuff.
Distributors here probably don't have the same clout to get manufacturers to foot the bill for incentives here to the same extent.
My guess is that they won't reduce the price of cars but will give larger deposit contributions to make it cheaper to get into a new car but I still think very few will be in buying mood this year.

"The scheme is intended to support drivers who need a new vehicle, but are facing financial difficulty as a result of the ongoing coronavirus crisis." and buying a new car on pcp, not knowing what is coming up, is meant to be a solid idea? Listen fair play to ford, look at all those jumping onto this pcp racket, no doubt it will get people in the door...

Who needs a new vehicle? Nobody, that's who.
    It's definitely marketing mumbo jumbo.
Sure, new cars are nice. But used cars are sensible in a crisis.

Who needs anything brand new? Nobody but we still want to buy new things as we are consumer driven. If people don't buy then the economy suffers on a wider scale which results in larger job loses indirectly. Also if people don't buy them new then how do others buy them used years later.

Yeah but nobody NEEDS on so badly the only way they'll manage is with a 3 month deferal on their very first payments.

There are some folk who don't need to avail of reductions etc but will only be too happy to take them if they are going.

This is a Ford U.K. offer. I get the impression from looking at U.K. motoring forums that they by and large have a different mentality to us when it come to buying and running cars. It always seems to be about the monthly payment and the smallest deposit required to get into a particular car and have a manageable monthly.
I’m regularly surprised to read of people buying cars I consider fairly exotic like m4’s or RS Audi’s and an extra 30 or 40 pounds a month makes a huge difference to them. I suppose the list prices are lower to begin with making them more attainable to begin with.
I also think the middle class over there are more obsessed than even we are with having the latest Reg plate. In this context I could see the Ford offer being good business.

Yup, all very true, they love their new plates.
Very regimental on expenditure too, but as you mention stuff is so much more attainable.......

    Model M4 Coupé Competition
    Monthly payments £682.83
    Term of agreement 48 months
Number of payments 47 monthly payments
    Annual mileage 8,000
    Customer deposit £4,819
    Dick Lovett deposit contribution £12,559.66
    Total deposit £17,378.66
    Optional final payment £23,656.41

Basically £9k/year to drive an M4 from new to it being 4 ......... not small money but manageable for many if you were so inclined.

8000 miles isn't madly low, I'm working at work still and doing about that. Excess mileage charge (per mile) 13.79 pence isn't mad either. £2758 for 20k miles.

To be honest if we had comparable here, I and many others I think would bite.
If you could get into say m340i for 5k deposit, 500 a month You would have me signing up!
The fundamental problem here is that the cost of all cars performance or run of the mill is too high to begin with and they depreciate too much over the first three years to make it work.

I have a relative who works in a replacement hip factory so I'm sorted there.

One factor is the tax on the price, Ireland has some of the lowest pre tax prices in Europe but add the various taxes and it blows them out of the water.

It's double that in reality though

Deposit is another 100 a month over the 48 months
Fuel will be 200+ in reality
    Insurance will be 100
Servicing (if not included) will cost money
    Tax
    And speeding fines!
Cleaning/valet and all the other costs that come with motoring!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,399 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Recently you could get an X3M Competition for 550 a month and 550 deposit.

So no more than 7k a year depreciation....

Good luck with that in this country, I don't even know the list price of those here. Edit, 128k....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,738 ✭✭✭Heres Johnny

Who is making money on these cars in the UK so?
Cheaper to lease/own yet they seem to be cheaper to buy used.
I don't get it really, they're not that cheap on list price

You will have most of those costs with any car. You have the deposit paid also so it’s not a monthly cost.

Some of the deals in the U.K. occasionally make no sense. With the x3M deal, I think BMW overproduced a batch of right hand drive cars to keep factory busy and wanted them on the road Hence the mega deals.
There was a recent lease deal of the new 840i gran coupe for similar small money.
These deals are great as the cars shed a ton in depreciation but you are insulated from this.
They don’t make financial sense sometimes but in general the finance deals are far superior to what we get.
550 per month with 550 down probably wouldn’t get you a Hyundai Tucson here.

I'd certainly class that as a monthly cost. Monthly cash flow, no, but cost, yes.
