I presume he will be triaging the patients, assessing whether or not they require isolation and testing. At the moment, most GPs are doing telephone triaging. This job would be in line with his skillset in a previous life (GP).

He is not giving up his day-job to exclusively do this. The article says that he is doing it one day per week.

I am not a particular lover of politics. But credit where credit is due. He has trained for nearly 10 years in medicine (5 years in college, one year intern, 2 years on the GP scheme). Being a doctor is part of his identity. He has a set of skills, and is putting them to good use. I have friends who are coming back onto the register, after leaving. They want to put all those years of training to use. And if at least one patient benefits from those skills, fair play!

The gesture means a lot! And it might encourage a few doctors to reregister with the IMC

Adjusted for population difference, the U.S has less deaths per million than Ireland. So they are technically doing better than us. (so far)

    Very simplistic reasoning

Right, so PR for the cameras basically...

He should concentrate on leading the country. He can potentially do a lot more good for our healthcare workers and everyone else, if he focused on doing his actually dayjob to the best of his abilities!
Well if you can link to a camera shot of him doing it, then it is. I think it's a good thing that someone can offer their services as a professional, like the many others who've also made themselves available.

Has anyone done any comparisons with countries that are similarly sized to us?

This is far more relevant as US is a federal state with a diversity of people's and cultures.

Ireland is completely different, with a centralised government and a largely homogenous culture.

You can adjust by population (and other ways) through this site: http://91-divoc.com/pages/covid-visualization/

Also aligns the deaths per day after the first announcement, so you can see where we stand at a particular point in time too.

We're also on a par with Netherlands and Italy (adjusting for time & population) and only behind Spain and Belgium (and the microstates).

Are you saying you think we will end up with as many deaths per capita as Italy?

He has a set of skills, and is putting them to good use.

But what he does have are a very particular set of skills. Skills he acquired over a very long career. Skills that make him a nightmare for people like SF

NEPHT are in charge in so much of this. Politics has largely just provided the voice and the management of economic measures.

People are damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

In this case if he 'don't' and led the country he wouldn't be damned.

He'd need a refresher course that would waste time and resources.

What would be the actual point of Leo suiting up and going into battle in some random hospital...??

    Serious question?

It would be a bit like the general of an army, jumping into the trenches with his soldiers and risking getting killed for the sake of currying favour with the men he's supposed to be leading... in other words, it would be very foolish and dumb!

Strikes me as more PR bullsh!t from our esteemed leader! Unless someone can enlighten me as to some other sensible reason why this would be necessary?

Why don’t you post here what you are doing to help the problem and allow people to assess that.

He’s a Trained medical professional, if he can help in some way then let him. When all this passes and he’s back to the full time Gig then you can assess if it Was worthy of not.

And it’s a damn side better than “you should be wearing masks but I’m not gonna” Tool that’s across the pond.

Worst example was the PPE delivery from China. Red carpet rolled out. Huge number of Gardai escorting the dodgy equipment in army trucks. The whole hero thing was a waste of resources and money.

The whole thing is very black, black, black, black, no glimmer of light.

Two types of people on this thread now. Those willing to take a holistic view and those who are indulging in party politicking.

At least by doing the one session per week, it will give him an insight into the reality on the ground and what medical professionals face on a daily basis. Thus, he will be able to make better informed decisions about the profession

Yep, about as simple and straightforward as it gets really!

    But still correct.

Couple of days ago I challenged the nonsense of comparing Ireland or anywhere else for that matter on the basis of relative populations.

It's a nonsense because there are just too many disparate factors necessary to give weight to before even the crudest comparison could be made with any justification.

Can't understand why people carry out and hold to theories based on such meaningless comparisons with such determination and passion.

It might not be a bad idea for Leo to trench out here and see what's going on, he could make important decisions for healthcare workers based on seeing what's actually going on there.
Fair play to him putting his shoulder to the wheel. I'd say he's sincere.

What he is doing is symbolic but sometimes symbolic can be powerful and helpful.

It's a bit like when the then Princess Elizabeth was a truck driver and mechanic in the military during the War.

Good on Leo going back to work as a doctor, helping the front line

The starting salary for a clerical officer is €24,104.

The starting salary of a Garda is €23,750.

I wouldn’t call either of those salaries too well paid.

But you can imagine the cherry-picked ward he'll end up in, which will hardly be representative. Its quite conceivable he'll only just be a serious distraction from the normal business of the hospital

Reading that our nurses are fearing the surge,
Question was asked in the comment section what if no surge comes,a lovely reply from a nurse it would mean everything was done right and at the right time.

You knew there is a global shortage of supplies stopping additional testing when you posted that, didnt you?
